hmm first twilight golf of the year after work tonight me thinks!
Hmmm - I was thinking the same thing. Alas - I have decorating to finish off on a tight schedule and so cannot do it tonight. The real heart breaker, is I am working from home, and my golf course is a Par 5 away from my house! I may get up there and hit a few balls though.

The decorating can wait, when the weathers like this it should be illegal NOT to play Plus ive a new app to try out https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com....
Anyone else used it?

Just thought I'd drop a quick post in about my trip to Devon last week...
I was invited to join a group of 21 regulars that head down to Ashbuy Manor each year for a week(ish) of golf and banter.
We travelled down last Sunday, early enough to play the 18-hole par-3 course in the afternoon (Texas Scramble). Our 4-ball managed to finish 8 under, scoring 45 points and also took the prize for most birdies, so £11 winnings on day 1!!
Monday was practice day and despite the awful conditions (cold and windy for the front 9, cold, windy and wet for the back 9) I managed to play pretty well. 34 points (playing off 18) which was good enough for 3rd place and another £7!!
Tuesday was the first day of competition and the weather was much-improved.
My golf however wasn't! I hit some decent shots but just couldn't seem to string a few together on any one hole to post a decent score.
Prime example was a par 5 on the back 9; I hit 3-wood off the tee to the middle of the fairway, about 240yds from the green, I hit my hybrid to the centre of the apron in front of the green about 15yds short. The following chip shot probably travelled 18" One more chip, two putts for a bogey that should never have been.
27 points scored but 3 holes blobbed.
Wednesday was the second and final day of competition and the weather was as good as the previous day, if not a little less breezy.
The golf wasn't great but it was slightly better than the previous day and I managed to make the best of some bad situations to score points on every hole against some pretty bad luck too.
For example; par 4 with a ditch running across the fairway approx 220yds out. I hit my 3 wood thinking that it'd carry the ditch relatively easily but I caught it out of the heel a bit and managed to plug the ball in the far bank of the ditch.
The following shot was from an awful lie and stance but I wasn't trying to do anything fancy, just come out sideways into the fairway...I managed to hit the bloody tree and bounce back into the hazard!
So after a drop and now plaing my 4th shot I managed to hit a great 7i into the green and two putted for a point.
32 points scored and no blobbed holes, so not great but better.
The final day was meant to be another round of Texas Scramble but as we were eating breakfast it started to snow...heavily
After spending a good 20mins strategically layering and tucking thermal leggings into socks and tops into leggings, the round got cancelled and we decided to hit the road home early.
All in all, a very enjoyable trip and the golf was...well golf, a bit up and down with a few missed opportunities but enough good shots / holes to make you look forward to the next round...which was Friday as I had the day booked off anyway
For a few days playing golf and having a laugh with mates, I'd definitely recommend Ashbury Manor.
It's great value and the courses we played were really good, with some stunnig holes on the Kigbear course.
It's not the most luxurious / modern of venues, in fact I'd probably best describe the place as a scene from Cocoon filmed in a giant social club but I'm definitely keen to go again next year.

Sounds like a good laugh - I'll remember that for next years golf trip!
It's the ideal place for a lads golf break! It cost us just over £200 for 4 nights and included all meals (buffet breakfasat, lunch and dinner (a couple of options off the menu plus veg etc.), all golf, buggies (£20 deposit but no charge) and use of the other lesiure facilities / activities if you get time (gym, pool / hydrospa, snooker tables etc.).
The price goes up at the begining of April but not by much, so I think they've already booked it for next year, end of May.

Is anyone here a member of an online golf handicap club or could recommend one?
I'd like to get a handicap so I can play some Championship courses. I used to play off 12.7 years ago when I was a member of The Vale, Bishampton, but can't justify paying for full membership for the 6 or 7 rounds I play a year.
Google search throws up http://www.myonlinegolfclub.com/Default.aspx
Anyone a member of it? Are they fully recognised? Anyone been refused course entry with one of these certificates??
All thoughts welcome
Cheers

What was the course like? was it just the one or was there a few? Have you got a link please?
The courses were really good; we played the Oakwood, Beeches and Kigbeare...http://www.manorhousehotel.co.uk/Pages/11/Golf.htm...
Lots of elevation changes and challenging lies and some really spectacular looking holes (Kigbeare 16th) and all in really good condition!

Thanks for the link roboxm3.
What a difference a week and one lesson can make!
Shot a 97 today, that's my best ever round since taking up this game.
Could easily have lost another 8-10 shots just by not making silly mistakes.
I'm after a driver now. Can anyone recommend one that makes that lovely "waaaaaatissssssssh piiiiing" sound I hear now and again?!

you want a Northwestern pro Plus 10! In all seriousness that's in jest, that are horiffic
Just got so fed up of the adverts on repeat a few years back - childhood memory, watching Golf TV every afternoon/evening....now whenever I hear the sound of a driver I think back to the advert!
In reality go to your local pro/range and hit a load with the benefit of a trackman type system to monitor launch angle/ballspeed coupled with how you feel about them - horses for courses, drivers are personal things

I never told you this - but I hear on good authority that if you present a handicap certificate from a "club", and it looks authentic. No-one will ever contact the club to check your handicap. Just a thought - and I know it works, as not everyone I have ever played with has a true handicap.I'd like to get a handicap so I can play some Championship courses. As long as you have a piece of paper, and look the part, and manage to get off the tee in front of the starter, you will be ok.
If you want to play in competitions that is a different kettle of fish, and you will be checked.
