which were great fun!
Did it take you slowly up the stairs and lower you into the bath after your round? I'm surprised Thora Hurd isn't used in the marketing pics wink

Actually, we took a bit of a wrong turn and ended up going down some steps. Less Thora Hird, more Dougie Lampkin!

If you watch the marketing vid though, they do state the reason they've got 3 wheels is to differentiate them from mobility scooters...

How important is it to have correctly fitting clubs when you first start out? I've got my eye on a used set of Ping's but I'd be very surprised if they are the correct fit for me since they could have been bought new by anyone. Is it possible to have them re-fitted? Will I notice a difference?
I ask because I don't want to spend all my time learning to swing incorrectly just to make my clubs work properly.
The simple answer is try before you buy - if you like it buy it. Second hand is a real good way to buy a great set a clubs for yourself starting out. You can get something real quality that will last you years rather than a new cheaper set that sometimes aren't made as well.

Which clubs are you looking at ?

Never a truer word. Also another thing that has a great bearing is commitment to the shot. I have had countless shots ruined by indecision and change of heart.

Wish I could practice what I preach - trouble is I shake like a stting dog at the prospect of playing half decently.......
I've also been consciously concentrating on choosing the shot that gets me the least bad result if I get it wrong, instead of the shot that gets me absolutely the best result if I get it dead right.

If I have the choice of a pitch over the bunker straight at the flag, or the chip to the side to 10' I've been taking the chip.
What you say is true. Visualise the shot in your head that you want to play, don't think about the obstacle in your way. If think about it your going in it.

Percentage golf is where its at - The least risky shots normally pay off, although if the shot on is to your strength's then take the risk. Its all about what you know you can do V risk.

Its good to play on your own sometimes when the course is quiet. Practice a few bunker shots or hitting over bunkers etc. The more you do them the more you realise that they aren't anything to worry about anyway.

At the minute I'm looking at a used set of Ping i3's which includes irons, 3 & 5 woods, a driver plus an odyssey putter. I know Ping and Odyssey generally make good quality clubs so I'm confident these will be a good choice and will also hold their value if I don't take to it and want to sell the clubs again in a few months.

My max budget would be £150 for a full set (possibly without a driver as I don't think I need one yet) so I can either get something used as above or a set of new Callaway Strata clubs which were linked on the previous page.

I got some used Callaway Superburners from American golf for around that price - really really easy to hit.

You wont go wrong with a decent brand like that + as you say you wont loose money if you don't get into it.

TBH I would be doing the same thing as you in your position and have in the past.

The best advice I could give is to go to courses, ranges or even some shops have a bay you can try clubs in. Go and see what you like the feel of, don't just buy a set because they are Ping etc everyone likes different things.

Played 9 holes last night after work, 19 points with a blob. Hit some lovely shots, putting was good.
Driving was very hit and miss hence the blob.

The hole I blobbed I took 3 off the tee (yes, I know - 3!!!) but as I have a never say die attitude I managed to hole a 40 yard chip for a 7. 1 bounce and straight in the cup! Best blob I've ever had!

Is that a tank on the 8th fairway?

The greenkeepers must be going nuts.

Has anyone here played St Thomas Priory in Rugeley? Only been twice, the first time was my first ever game of golf which was shocking ( 124 :| ) played yesterday after getting into golf more and managed 100. The course itself isn't in good condition anymore, does anyone know what's happening there at all? Couldn't get an answer from the guy who takes the money in his hut and the club house is closed now...

Guess that green!! I took a detour after the shopping trip with the misses as I'm going to book a weekend here and thought the place looked amazing.
If you have played here is it as good as it looks?

3 golf course under one club in east Anglia

Woburn is the correct answer, the whole facility looks great headed over to the clubhouse and picked up some info on golf breaks and their fairly reasonable still expensive compared to my local but the quality in the course should justify that.

Society Captains Day yesterday - and I won!! Shot 87 which included two 7's and an 8 on the par 5's so could have been very good.

Still, always nice to win smile

It was at Nizels golf club, Hildenborough. First time I've played there and quite enjoyed it, surprisingly hilly!

Thanks Shrew, sound advice, I'll do exactly that - it wouldn't have been on my mind but the player who's 7 strokes back and who I will be drawn with for the final round is massively competitive, has poor etiquette and attempts to play mind games "Your right hand's too low" "Lots of pressure being the leader" "Oooh careful" etc etc....

I told him the last person that made snide comments ended up wearing my driver (not my proudest moment and I broke it in half) he backed off after that but I play for enjoyment rather than beating someone and I disliked playing him in the last round, in fact everyone seems to dislike him.

Thanks again.
Just play your own game don't worry what others are doing, A large % of golf is what goes on in your head.
Played the final round yesterday and I'd like to say I did exactly that Shrew - unfortunately I didn't but I still won the stroke play champs by 9 strokes.

Etiquette boy was still up to his old tricks - congratulated me with 5 holes still to play and tried to shake my hand, I asked if he was forfeiting and he said no but I was the winner because he wouldn't be able to get 7 strokes back in 5 holes(!??!?!)

The top 8 now move onto matchplay champs and that runs until October.

Congrats to you Rosscow on your win thumbup

Played in the monthly medal today , On the first hit a great tee shot (dog leg par 5 ) and then for some reason decided to go for it in 2 when it's a simple 7 iron then wedge from there, shanked the 7 wood then hit a nice 7 iron out of the rough, attacked the pin with the 4th shot (pin at the back), landed about 6 foot from the pin but straight over the back of the green , down the slope and into thick rough. 5th shot the ball moved a foot , 6th not much better then chipped up and missed a 4 foot putt to end up with a 9 !

Shot 89, so 17 over and four over handicap, wasn't striking the ball that well so was happy enough with the score.

Got let through by a threeball who were visitors on the course, it was Darius Vassell the ex Aston Villa and England striker with his partner, she had a lovely swing, (she's a pro-basketball player in the past apparently). Nice people, Darius came over to help look for my playing partners ball smile That always has to happen doesn't it when folks let you through !

Anyway, nice warm day , course in great conditiom and will be back out tomorrow to try par the 1st hole this time smile

Well done Sir thumbup

Matchplay is my favourite part of golf. I love it and what I was always best at. Im very competitive so revel in the thought of going head to head with someone and had a great playing partner for doubles.

Actually this is what hit home and made me realise how of how golf gets into your and other peoples heads like we were saying above.

I was about 15 / 16 at the time I was playing a matchplay comp round against a fella off 15 I was off 9 at the time. I will never forget this game.

The bloke I played was a pretty good player, a bit of a well known bandit. I thought id have a big job on to beat him tbh. He was probably about the same std if rumours were true, even though the handicaps didn't reflect that. First tee, hard ground and wind assist I smacked it onto the front fringe with my driver 340 yards ish, He was 100 yards back.

That single shot lost him the game, I won the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th hole.
All I heard off him was how can a Jnr hit the ball so far, what club did you hit then ? WOW etc. His mind had gone completely off the game and he was more interested in what I was doing. He soon went from a bloke who would never even look at me in the clubhouse to hiya mate can I buy you a drink blah blah blah fake typical golf club bull st.

Anyway the point being golf is a lot to do with your state of mind. In matchplay you have a lot more control over this because you can see how well or bad others are playing - use that as a training ground.
