Agreed, was he not NZ heavyweight boxing champ for a while?
He was a World Champ! Still ranked as one of the Top 100 heavyweights in the world, I believe!

Not that Im a religious person much but SBW converted to Islam a few years back and since then has changed very much as a person in terms of his lifestyle and outlook by the looks of things. I don't think the "materialistic" medal meant much to him at this time in his life.

Either way if that was me I wouldn't have ever given it away and would be polishing the damn thing every morning! biggrin
Ok although not really sure I see the winner's medal as something materialistic in that sense; it's more an ultimate reward for years of sacrifice and hard work and hence for me it would be a treasured possession for life (and certainly not something I'd give away to a complete stranger minutes after receiving it!). I also wonder what his team-mates really made of it all? The medal was won as part of a collective effort and if I was one of the other All Blacks I'm not sure I'd have been terribly impressed to see one of my colleagues give away such a hard-earned prize quite so easily; if it had gone to a good cause possibly a different matter but to just hand it to a kid who shouldn't have even been on the pitch was pretty poor IMO....
I thought it quite remarkable. Good on the bloke. It seemed to be a wish to share in the thrill.

The medal is an individual reward for the player. The cup is the reward for the team.

I know a retired police officer who has what amounts to a shrine in his living room, with a couple of medals, a note of a commendation and, behind glass, probably bulletproof, bits of paraphernalia. That seems odd to me. Doing it, being there is the thing in my mind. Not that I, unlike his wife, would criticise him for it.

Still weird though.

I've got a Ford DFV piston that I use as a paperweight, and I earned that to an extent, but I don't display it.

The man has explained he 'just felt bad for the kid'. Maybe he got swept up in moment and thinks it was a mistake, maybe not. Regarding his faith, it's probably what kept him out of trouble given his history with drinking and being a bit handy with his fists. So many league players have that mongrel stigma and for good reason.
yeah because rugby union players never get into any sort of trouble with their fists do they? rolleyes

That last comment is peurile and offensive. yes the roots of league are in northern "working class" towns and cities and union "tends" to be viewed as a posher version but to say RL players have a mongrel stigma is pathetic.

As for the SBW medal thing - well until I learned he got a replacement I thought he was acting foolishly and devaluing the medal and the victory completely. I thought Mourihno behaved despicably in throwing his medals into the crowd over the years - however I'll qualify that by saying that his act was borne of arrogance and attitude whereas SBW was doing a good thing...

give him a shirt or a signed hat but not your WC winners medal FFS...however he got a new one so happy days

I was referring to Australian league players. I appreciate it came across as singling league out. Didn't mean anything by it nor inferring lower classes. Back in the day league was a bloody rough game. I remember in Aus as a teenager watching it just as much for the fighting. I knew some of the players Matthew Ridge, he didn't need an excuse to assault someone, little Alfie Langer, the same. Brent Todd, a vile human being, fraud, assault, drugs. Back then the game was wild. No discipline like today.

He had a handful of minor fights (mostly charity events from memory) and did ok. Some of those 'titles' are a bit of a joke though.

Brilliant, we've badly needed another Premiership rampaging French No8 since Chabal hung up his boots!
