In athletics the Commonwealth Games has been seen as a good place to give younger/less internationally experienced athletes an introduction to the pressures of a "Games", so I don't think the loss of various high-profile established stars is a problem really. Unfortunately in athletics Glasgow2014 is clashing with Eugene2014 - the World Junior Champs where TeamGB have already won 2 golds (W100m and Heptathlon) - so our best young athletes have been forced to choose.

Certainly starting to look that way, what with all the missing high profile athletes according to the Beeb:

Yohan Blake (Jamaica) - Ex-world 100m champion- hamstring operation
Mark Cavendish (Isle of Man) - Ex-world champion cyclist - shoulder injury
Dwain Chambers (England) - British 100m champion - Euro focus
Jessica Ennis-Hill (England) - Olympic heptathlon champion - had a baby
Mo Farah (England) - Olympic 5,000m & 10,000m champion - illness
Becky James (Wales) - Two-time world champion cyclist - knee injury
Katarina Johnson-Thompson (England) - Heptathlon star - foot injury
Asafa Powell (Jamaica) - Ex-world 100m record holder - banned
That's before you get into the whole thing of the countries that normally clean up at these sorts of things not even being there!

I don't think anyone thinks a CG medal is equivalent to Olympic or World medals. Of course, in some sports they may be roughly equivalent but for most it's a stepping stone to global competition.

A distant relative of mine won a CG gold in the early 60s, still dines out on it to this day!
As for those that can't be there, nobody remembers who wasn't there, only the winners and competitors are remembered..

Let's get behind The athletes and give support for their years of dedication and achievements. I am looking forward to Scotland winning some medals in the pool tonight.

Well the men's 200 Brst stroke was a surprise. Did not expect Murdoch to win. Jamieson looked gutted and he was so dejected in the interview saying he obviously wasn't good enough. He's only within sniffing distance of the world record!! Hope he can pick it back up for the 100!

Jonny Brownlee "some days i'm the best triathlete in the world, other days i'm not even the best triathlete in Leeds...." or words to the effect.

Aus and Boks in the pool.
Aus in the velodrome.
Aus & NZ and Canada on the rowing lake.
NZ sailing.
African middle and long distance runners.
The rest of the Jamaican track squad!

Yeah...dead weak smile

There is no rowing at the Commies.

Boks only have three decent in the pool that spring to mind: Le Clos, van den Burgh and Schoeman.

WR by the Aussie ladies last night in the relay was overshadowed by Murdoch's 200 breast swim. I think either he, van den Burgh, or Sprenger will take the 100, Jamieson just hasn't got the speed down the first 50 to be close enough in the second 50.

No rowing in the commies? Didn't realise that...strange as UK AUS NZ and Canada are arguably the strongest nations in the world. The US and Germany more so in the heavy 8.

Used to be rowing, but not anymore. There is a Commonwealth regatta, but that is separate from the Games and not so many attend.

Welsh athlete Rhys Williams withdrawn due to a doping control irregularity. That's the second Welsh athlete to fall foul of doping control. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/commonwealth-games/28...

Edit: Sounding like dodgy supplements as both sponsored by the same legal supplements company. This again raises the question of why do they need the supplements? What is it about their diet that means they can't stay fit and healthy and train hard without supplements?

What a swim that 400 IM was. Good friends with pavoni's Mrs so wanted him to get in the medals, but definitely happy to see the Scotsman win. That last hundred he was mega strong!

I'm finding the coverage unwatchable, shouty Balding at it like a bull in a china shop and the occasional 30 sec of action interspersed with 10 mins of constant chatter, music and montages. Dreadful.
Shes gash isn't she. The rest of the team are good though. Always got love for Sharon Davies and silver fox fos!

Is Sharon Davies ever going to start looking older? Looks pretty much the same as she did 20 years ago!

The standard is OK and a cool evening in Glasgow might not be the most helpful for fast times. Of course, no one should expect the Commonwealth Games to be the same standard as the Olympics/Worlds as major nations are missing.
