Commonwealth Games - Scotland

The standard is OK and a cool evening in Glasgow might not be the most helpful for fast times. Of course, no one should expect the Commonwealth Games to be the same standard as the Olympics/Worlds as major nations are missing.
Conditions didn't seem too much of a problem for the women's 100m winner Highway Star said:

Well no but then she is the best in the world... I suspect despite the conditions we would still have seen a fast time from Bolt too.Sounds like some elbows in the 800m heats between the English and Welsh runners too The middle distance races are always pretty violent places to be, with elbows, shoves, heel clips, spikings and falls pretty common.

Can't blaim Bolt for thinking this way but to actually air his view in public is a bit silly. He of course denies the conversation took place.
Tbh, even as a fan the Commonwealth Games have always been a 'bit st' compared to the Olympics and the World Athletics Championship. The fact that the top stars don't turn up - or make token appearances in the relay like Bolt is doing says it all really.

I just watched Sally Pearson run a fairly blistering 100m hurdles heat; she holds the olympic record.2012 Olympic perve thread officionados will be pleased to know that Michelle Jenneke also qualified for the final.

Riiight, so we define the expected standard based on what the TV audience can run?
I think the point he is making is that whilst not the equivalent of the Olympics or worlds for sofa based wobble bottoms such as ourselves to be criticising the standard is a touch rich. I agree. Those winning gold are still world class athletes. Your not going to hear me saying it's not good enough for me to sully my eyes with!
I think the standard is pretty high - its only occassionally that world best times are run in major competitions anyway - the fact is the level of competition (between athletes) has been high.
the english girl in teh long jump yesterday showed what it means to put your best efforts into a moment and she came through and was naturally delighted.
I challenge anyone on here to run even 1 lap as fast as the 800m or 1500m guys - they tank along and the TV makes it deceptive.
the leading time triallers in the cycling yesterday were "averaging" 30mph that is fast.
as an aside I thought the reaction to eilidh childs silver was brilliant. kitsch and not taking itself too seriously and a games moment for sure.
Poster girl though....not sure. if that passess for a poster girl in scotland, I'll vote for independence from Leeds.
Joking apart, it was wonderful stuff.

on a similar note, the diving last night saw England's Tonia Couch get a 5th. She is rather lovely....

Watching it last night I just can't stop thinking it's still a small pond in the athletics, regardless of lifetime bests or tremendous atmospheres. 2.01 to win the ladies 800? 5.55 wins the men's pole vault? Silver in the high jump at 1.92? They are all pretty average international performances when all is said and done.
Some of the swimming performances were pretty good, Murdoch's 200 breast was a whisker off the WR - I hope they go on to build on them at the Europeans in a couple of weeks time.

Nicola Adams gets the gold, Michaela Walsh not happy. It was a close one and a split decision, Walsh really thought she did it, saying that she had a dream lastnight of the ref raising her arm as the winner, then walking into the medal ceremony with the Vettel finger, mouthing 'I won' to the camera.

I thought Walsh just shaded it, but it was very tight.Gassing Station | Sports | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
