Yeah, I wasn't specifically meaning the lock itself as much as being on any inland waterway.

You don't need a licence personally but the boat does. For canoes, they are covered by Canoe England/BCU. For narrowboat, it will have had an environment agency licence. smile

Well I've just ordered mine smile

£70 delivered, with oar, pump etc included seems very good value (so long as it doesn't go pop after a couple of uses)

I don't think I'll be attacking the river wild in it straight away, just a bimble around a few of the local lakes and reservoirs to begin with. The Zambezi the following week maybe?

Well that was a lovely way to spend a sunny afternoon smile

A leisurely 4 hour paddle down the Trent, from Willington to Shardlow. The Intex K1 stood up to it just fine as expected, quite comfortable too. Saw many many swans, lambs in the fields, five herons and a stoat/weasel. No grief from anybody (there was the odd sign near Willington threatening unspecified 'action' if found canoeing on that stretch, but not a soul around).

The only question is - where next!

Bought a roof rack:

& a plastic TEK 240:

Itching to get back out again now. And yes, the Llangollen run is dangerous I take the chicken run at tower falls!

What we do is drive to the end point, leave a car there. All pile into one car, & drive to the start point. Just don't do what my friend did and leave the 'end car' keys in the 'start car'. A very wet taxi drive back up river!
