As ever - it depends.

Depends mainly on the fish, other circumstances may apply. Forex, when fishing for Ballan Wrasse I'd strike immediately and mightily, cos they're lightning fast bait robbers who'd strip your hook of bait in the blink of an eye. Tope or Blues, on the other hand, I'm happy to let run when they first hit, then when I reckon they've stopped and are going to mouth about the bait to swallow it, I hit.

I reckon its going to be trial and error for you in The Congo.

The worry about that is that trial and error suggests multiple opportunities which I am not imagining getting realistically

A quick last minute bump.
I am going soon and having anxiety that I am forgetting fishing fundamentals.
This happened when I suddenly realised I hadn't even packed a disgorger of any type and made me realise I could be forgetting something really basic that could cause me a st load of trouble.

ANyway can you lot think me up a fishing checklist

I have
Rods, reels, alarms, lures, traces, swivels, floats, leads and a boga grip. Just off the top of my head.
Please just list other essentials at me

Yes, I have that too.
Specifically fishing stuff. I don't care about forgetting anything else

Assume you have the non-fishing stuff sorted - DEET, first aid kit with sterile sharps & syringes, etc?

Wire traces?
On this front I have 3 spools of 10m trace wire.
How much wire should I typically leave above the hooks, and how much in total will one trace tend to use. Any ideas anyone?

Oh sorry, and another technical question.
I am using 50lbs braid which I have never used before. Someone said to me that you should always have a mono leader as a shock absorber or the 50lb braid will easily break.
Is this correct?

If its too big for scales, its probably too big for a net too. Apart from that, some spare beads are always handy.
