How did it go?
It was a good little trip!

We played The Derby on the Sunday, which (as those guys were alluding /\/\/\) is an OK little course. Pretty short and straight forward but nice enough and the greens were lightening (and very true), which made things a bit more challenging.

The weather was really good, so we enjoyed a few cold ones in Sam's Bar afterwards, watching the groups on The PGA finish their rounds and didn't move from their until about 11pm.

Monday we played The PGA which, to be honest, I didn't really like. Not just because it was very tough (which it was) but I just don't think that the 'inland Links' style is to my taste, so I wasn't really enjoying the course and looking forward to seeing the next hole.

Even with a course guide it was really difficult to plot your way round and decent shots were getting you in trouble but I suppose that's the challenge of it. Part of me would like to have another go at it, so if we go back we'll see if we can to The PGA and The Brabazon (which looked amazing).

For £99 (B&B and two rounds) you can't really complain and I certainly wouldn't be put off doing a similar thing at another course; I think Celtic Manor is next on the list but this time we'll make sure we're playing the courses that we really want to play, so we don't feel that we've somehow missed out.

Played my normal midweek 9 holes after work yesterday and equaled my best score. Driving is getting better but I was losing it right when hitting into the (strong) wind. My putting was solid (ave 1.8) as were my irons. I've said it before but a one hour lesson has improved my ball striking by such a huuuge margin. I find the middle of the club on almost every iron shot now, I won't guarantee the face to path is bang on every time but it feels so good when you get a good strike on the ball.

My score was helped along by a couple of miracle shots, one a flop over a bunker with no green to work with that landed and stopped within a foot of the hole, the other a 60 yard punchy chip and run from in the trees to within 6 inches. The other saving grace was that my big misses with the driver all ended found (most important) and relatively free trouble (as much as you can expect anyway).

I love golf.

A fade will always be exaggerated into the wind. I bet the ball was travelling a bit higher and floatier too. Try to learn how to play a draw & you'll soon find you won't be losing 50-60 yards off the tee into wind(subject to your normal length)

Yeah, the ones I lost right wouldn't have been terrible shots with no wind. I did develop a draw but my last lesson coached it out of me a bit, the trade-off as mentioned above is much better iron play - a trade-off I would take every time.

Do most of you use "the same" swing with your driver as you do your irons? Obviously setup will be different and the club is longer, but do you consciously swing in a different way?

Personally no. I really try and attack down with my short/mid irons where driver and driving irons are generally hit with the feeling of hitting up on the ball. Although swing plane doesn't change much, if at all. I'm quite a 'feely' player though. I.e. I'd rather hit a fade or draw by changing my plane than set up etc. Strange as it sounds, i find it a lot easier.

Last time I was measured I was 4 degrees down with my driver which is another reason I get a lot of spin and can lose the ball right. Next lesson is going to be more driver focused I think.

There's your answer. You don't need a lesson to change your angle of attack. A good drill to help this is to Tee it up a LOT higher and outside your left foot if you're right handed. Once you've got that basic feeling, the Pro can help fine tune it. But you'll be in a better starting place smile. (I spent a lot of time fixing my driver swing AOA!)

Playing The Oxfordshire again on Sunday. They have a fourball offer on for £120, so taking advantage of it.

Excellent value! Gutted i haven't played for a few weeks and won't be swinging a club for the at least the next 2 weeks. First round back will be, interesting.

I'll give this a go. Thanks.

Just driving back from an overnighter at Forest of Arden. Played the aylesford yesterday and the Arden today. I didn't think much of the aylesford. The greens were terrible. Full of hollow tine marks, slow and bumpy.

The Arden on the other hand is a gorgeous course. The greens are lightning fast! I'd definitely recommend going to play it if any of you are thinking about it. There's even deer trotting across the greens as you play into them.

Obviously nothing like the rest of you, but just put my first 100 balls through some clubs at the driving range. Never played before, and my Father-In-Law took me down and showed me the ropes. Really lovely way to spend a Sunday morning.

Something incredibly satisfying about the whole thing. Certainly think I need to get some tuition before I do anything more so I don't learn too many bad habits early on.

It was all going so well.

"Leave the driver at home" i said.

"Can't hit anything other than a massive slice" i said.

"3-wood is going as far and much straighter" i said.

So...

After a couple of hours, 100 balls and pretty much rebuilding my swing on the driver, how did i find myself primarily on a simulator at AG and then handing over pennies for a new G25?

TBF, as we all know, new shiny things make everything better. Much like bacon i find.

Next stop is an Odyssey Works 9 c/w super stroke. It feels EPIC.

A plethora of expensive courses round that area I would love to play, including Sunningdale, Wentworth West, Walton Heath, The Berkshire etc...
Wow. That's just silly prices IMO. How anyone can justify that for a round of golf is beyond me.
They charge £125 a round at my home course!

We had 9 Americans helicoptered in from London (2 choppers). They landed on the driving range, and 9 of my mates (unfortunately I was on holiday) caddied for them.

They each got a minimum of £200 tip! Not surprising when the main man was one George Roberts (a quick Google showed him to be worth $5.2 billion on the Forbes rich list).

They then got flown back to the Savoy in London, and were being flown to Royal St. Georges the following day before heading back to the states in his private jet.

That's the way to live!

Have been on holiday so hadn't hit a ball for nearly 3 weeks until yesterday morning.

Was VERY rusty for the first 6 holes, but managed to score 25 points for the remaining holes. Not too bad. Driver all over the shop!

Is there anyone here playing with regular shafts in their irons despite a swing speed which suggests they should be playing stiff?

This is a very subjective issue, I love stiff shafts but know many players with equal ss that prefer a regular.

FWIW all the great ball strikers of the past, Hogan, Mo Norman etc have all demanded super stiff shafts.

It's not just about your measured swing speed. It depends on other factors too.

How many of you use DMDs (Distance Measuring Devices)? I personally use a Skycaddie Touch, and must say it is an absolutely fantastic device. Detail and accuracy are second to none. Have seen other golfers with Garmin or Golf Buddy Devices and they are definitely not as good. All my opinion of course biggrincool
