After living in the Alps for a year and not hitting a ball I've been home 2 weeks and played 4 full rounds. First 3 were hit and miss but today I matched my best ever round of 13 over. Was playing off a 17 handicap before I left but always knew I could play lower.

Only hit driver twice, 3 wood off the tee the rest of the time. Had a couple of putts lip out that would've made it even lower. Only 2 doubles on the card which was pleasing
17 handicap, my ar$e!!! hehe

It's true! I'm capable of playing in single figures with the right mental approach and practise. At only 23 and been playing the game since I was a kid I've got a good swing, but often implode mentally which lets me down!

Don't worry, I know only too well how it is.

I play off 15 now, and last week I played terribly on the front 9 coming in with 11 points, only to shoot a 3 over the card 22 points on the back 9 including 2 birdies!

It's a funny old game!

Well, if you want a 19 or 20 degree (3 iron equivalent) and you only need a 'lite' or regular flex, you'll be OK biggrin

No idea how any of them play. I'd recommend a Ping G25 or G30 though.

I have TaylorMade RBZ Stage1 4 (22) and 5 (25) and RBZ Stage2 3 (19) hybrids. Great clubs IMO, and they are really easy to hit I find and launch the ball well. I have heard good things about Adams Tight Lies too. IMO, £59 for RBZ Stage 2 hybrid as in the link is a great price.

It's only any good if it's the correct club for him - i.e. shaft and loft.

Is there a golf shop near you where you can try clubs outside? I bought a Taylor made hybrid from AG, and regretted it. It was really easy to hit and their computer system told me I was hitting it 200 yds dead straight.

I used it on the course and it was an absolute hook machine. Complete waste of money.

I now use 2nd hand Cobra DWS hybrids from about 2007/2008. They're old, but Jesus they're good.

Just picked up a set of mint Maxfli Revolution irons off Ebay for £38 (£25 + postage)

I had these irons years ago and stupidly sold them, can't wait to get my old sticks back !

I have the Callaway X2hot 3 and 4 hybrids with regular flex shafts which I carry instead of 3 and 4 irons. These have now been superceded by the XR hybrids but they'll be pretty much the same club but with a new colour scheme! I used to sneer at the thought of a hybrid replacing an iron but am now completely converted. I can use the 4 hybrid in rough where I couldn't hit out with anything bigger than an 8 iron. Great clubs.

Fully agree Boxsey. I carry 3,4,5 hybrids instead of irons, and find them far easier to hit and more adaptable to different types of shots. A lot of purists don't like them, but hey ho.. biggrin

Well the Maxfli's have arrived and I'm really happy with them, must be 14 years old now and considering how easily these clubs dink (nickel cast) they are in incredibly good nick.

Can't wait to give them a try smile

Lovely irons, almost bought a set of these back in the day, but went for TaylorMade 300's instead. Given how long the TM's lasted, I probably should have had the Maxflis.

On hybrids my golf buddy actually just bought one of the Callaway XR Hybrids - had a go at the weekend, a pretty impressive bit of kit. I'm one of those annoying purists who would rather use a long iron, but to be fair the Callaway went long, high and straight. It's making me consider one for winter use, as a bladed 2 iron and the temperatures seen in the typical British winter don't mix too well....

I can't believe that a 14 year old set of irons are easier to hit or more forgiving than a modern set of cavity irons?!

The only benefit surely is that they were cheap? I hope you're not just looking back at them with rose tinted glasses and that they are as good as you remember them!

These are cavity Irons, granted 14 years old but I'll guess we'll have to see how they perform. They aren't as long as todays cranked lofts, and I don't really believe that iron technology has advanced as much as the manufacturers would have the public believe. I'm sure a £500 set of G30's would be great and yes they might well be slightly better, but right now I don't have that option.

The sticks these are replacing are even older, but for £25 + P&P it isn't going to be an expensive mistake.

Bit of a bargain if you ask me. Like you say, £25 + postage is not an expensive mistake! Especially as you can probably re-sell for a similar price on fleabay if you don't like them! They also look a lot smarter than most Cavities that you can get hold of today. No lairy colours or shiny gimmicks!

Yes, this is what upsets me.

Why is it that if you want a friendlier iron, it has to look revolting?

Fair enough it's going to have a thicker sole and a thicker top line but it isn't hard to make a nice looking chrome club within those dimensions. Nearly all the game improvement clubs have horrible branding, garish colours or other stuff going on.

As I think Mizuno say, you should play the friendliest club you can bare to look at. Unfortunately for me anything friendlier than the MP-54 is starting to look a bit rank to me.

I'm picking out Mizuno as I know the range, but they're all at it and most are worse.
