Anyone heading to the Open at St Andrews this year??

Trying to find a hotel/B&B is proving impossible frown
Might have to wait at year for Troon.
Unfortunately not. Wish i was! Watching The Open at the home of golf has always been a dream!

Settling for a golf weekend with the lads in May at none other than Celtic Manor. Anyone have any experience of playing any of the three courses there? I want to play the 2010 but the guys i play with are all above 20 handicaps and don't really fancy the length. I've heard its a bit of a monster and extremely tough? Almost 7500 Yards?
I doubt you'd be allowed to play from the Championship tees - more than likely the yellows (6570).

You might be able to play from the whites (7008).

To be honest I wouldn't fancy playing the full length - 500+ yard par 4's and 666 yard par 5's doesn't sound like great fun hehe
Celtic manor courses are tough, well the 2010 is long and tough all round, for example the greens are shaved so if you don't hit them in the middle the ball will/can roll off and into water. But good scores can be achieved, my mate off 7 broke 80 there.

The other courses are nice, but the greens were so tough ( well to me anyway) they broke in the opposite direction to what you would visually see. I had a mate with us who was a pro and he threw his putter in frustration and lost it mid round in the bushes and had to buy a new putter, hilarious. Later that year in the winter my mate had another look for it and found and returned it!

It's and expensive night if you buy drinks in the hotel but worth the experience at 2010, great to see layout, especially the closing 5 holes. We opted for a night out in Cardiff when we last went...i got wasted.

Sounds right up my street! Think we're planning a night in Cardiff. Just hope the scores aren't affected too badly... biglaugh

Right, I'm in but take it easy on me as I'm a slow learner where golf is concerned.

I've flirted on and mostly off with golf for many years but last year in preparation for filling in my time upon retirement I had some lessons and started playing reasonably regularly with my cousin who plays almost every day off of a 9 handicap.

I've just joined the local club as a five day member (Seaford Head) and am hopefully going to be playing at least twice a week this year to get good enough to get a handicap. I don't often count the scores yet as that would probably be offputting, the last time I did though I got round in 105. I had another couple of lessons just before Christmas and have got a couple more booked, I definitely feel like I'm improving so watch this space.
Hey, TeeRev. I like Seaford Head. Have they finished the new club house yet?

I'm playing there at the beginning of April.

The new clubhouse will be excellent, unfortunately it was originally supposed to be open for November then for December but it's not quite there yet. We think that realistically it will be ready in early March so that should be just right for your visit.

Until it opens you have to start your round from the 5th tee which is a tough drive and then when you've played the 18th you have to go back up to the 1st which is hard work so you're not missing anything right now. The course is looking good though, they've done a lot of work on the greens and they are going to be in really good condition this year.

Let me know what date/time you'll be there and I'll try to be around to say hello

Yeah, it was like that when I played there. I birdied the 5th and chipped in for birdie on the par 3 4th!

Par 31, only about 2000 yards long unfortunately! wink

My best score around a proper 18 hole par 72 is 88 I think (only managed to get under 90 once so far)

Rory nailing that hole in one, Hit his 9 Iron 177 yards. That's just madness. Im sure Fowler hit a 9 iron 199 late last year too. Shows the massive gap between weekend golfer and a pro.

Tiger hit a 9i over 200 yards in a tournament some years back (205 from memory, not downhill and not at altitude)... he was out of position off the tee and tried to hit a massive hook round some trees... ended up on the clubhouse roof and somehow got a free drop.

Only had time for 9 holes today, played terribly.

Had a few things on my mind and just couldn't concentrate. Played the 9th well though to finish. Bloody cold - had to wait until 10am until we could play due to frost!

Playing the Roman road tomorrow. It was only £18!! Have not played the twenty ten but the Montgomerie is one of my favourite courses in the area and I have played that 4 or 5 times before.

That hole plays downwind, plus pin cut towards the back, it's not that outrageous a club to hit tbh.

Massive collapse from Kaymer - shocking that he's lost that after holding a 10 shot lead.

Been on a lesson a month for a few months now. Improving steadily with practise too. Its been declared as cheating by the group of guys I play with. I cant wait to beat them (I say that knowing first comp round we play ill duff it all day)

Need to practise my putting. Must find a way.

I bought a Ping G20 driver on Saturday and yesterday afternoon to try it out did ten holes at Seaford Head with my cousin, it was very soggy and we were playing off mats onto temporary greens. My score is irrelevant but his was par, par, par, eagle, birdie, par, bogie, par, par, birdie. He's 66 and plays off nine but is so consistent it's sickening.

How was it?
I have a round booked for Saturday.. £14 by using tee off times.

Although only recently new to golf at about a year since i started. Loving it so far and have enjoyed playing a variety of courses across South Wales. Not a member of a club so have no handicap.

It's a very good course. Challenging, but not too tough or scarily long. The greens were superb as always, however the areas around some of the tee boxes, and particularly the rough was very boggy and very wet under foot and with a little more wet weather forecast for later in the week I would prepare for a little mud! Stand out holes would be the 5th a lovely par 5. The 13th which requires an accurate drive, the par 3 14th (only because I got a 2 on that hole!!). The 16th a nice little hole which requires a little thought off the tee and the 17th is a delightful little par 3. I thoroughly enjoyed it, however I prefer the Montgomerie of the two courses I have played there. That being said, if the Roman Road was boggy, the the Montgomerie must have been even worse as that course is more 'hilly' however there are more standout holes, and overall is more of a challenge. The 3rd hole is probably the best hole that I have played in golf (not that I have played a huge range of courses though!!).

I am sure you will have a great day out. Let us know how you get on smile
