Only had time for 9 holes today, played terribly.

Had a few things on my mind and just couldn't concentrate. Played the 9th well though to finish. Bloody cold - had to wait until 10am until we could play due to frost!
Keeping warm is most important to playing well. Wish I had taken this advice when I was a young pup as it makes the world of difference. Mix that in with things on your mind no wonder you had a shutter.

At least you got out it's kinda nice being outside on days like that even if it is dam cold

So overall I was pleased with the round on the Roman Road.
To much attacking play for a first time going around it, not knowing the fairways and slopes.

Lovely lovely course, fairways were nice while the rough was quite boggy.

17 over for the round, 7 pars from it. So quite pleased with that for a first time there.

Had a productive weekend of golf!

Had an hours lesson on Saturday morning, followed by 2 hours of general practice (chipping, putting, range).

Then had a cracking game of foursomes yesterday - we won 3 & 2 after being 1 down at the turn.
Holes 11 to 16 we played 3 under par to turn the game around!

Hit some lovely drives and some cracking irons, was a very enjoyable morning in some lovely conditions.

Had a great range session last night. Really feel like I'm making progress.

Just took my 7 iron and driver, and a bucket of balls lasted an hour! Quality, not quantity.

Just making sure everything is as it should be:

Club face to target
Feet square to club face
Shoulders square to feet
Left arm straight and square to feet on way up through back swing
Wrist set
Nice smooth tempo

= Hitting the 7 iron beautifully to 160 yards with a lovely controlled 5 yard draw
= Hitting the driver to the back of the range, again with a lovely controlled 5 yard draw

Happy days, I think this year could be really good!

Once you've dialed that in with every club...turn your attention to putting & chipping! every hour on the range should mean two on / around the putting green...(although that's not exactly practical!)

Completely agree - just impossible to do during the winter darkness.

I had an hour or so chipping/putting last Saturday and then played on Sunday.

I have a foursomes competition this weekend, but if I have time I'll have another little session on the practice green.

I try and play at least once a week during the winter and try to either go to the range once during the week or have a practice session on the Saturday (but I get moaned at by the wife if I do this too much!).

Can't wait for the clocks to go forward - I'll be all over the evening golf! Playing until nearly 10pm in the summer, can't beat it.

A decent golfing weekend!

Had the society prize giving dinner/dance on Saturday night where I picked up a trophy.

Up at 6am this morning for a foursomes Cup competition at the golf club, which my partner and I managed to win!

So another cup to collect at next months golf club dinner.

Absolutely savage winds this morning - 35mph winds gusting to 50mph - really tough conditions but we actually played some nice stuff.

Hitting the ball really nicely at the moment.

lucky man! can't seem to convince my usual partners that playing in minus 3 degrees is a good idea at the moment. the big softies.

Well done on the win!

Loving your enthusiasm, looks like you have a good year ahead smile

BTW, anyone buying those Adidas shoes for £12 a couple of pages back need to be careful as they are banned at quite a lot of courses now (including my course) frown

Thanks, Duncan. You're right, I'm absolutely loving my golf at the moment!

A lot of it is down to getting in at a really good, active club. Also, because our course is so amazingly dry you don't get the hassle of winter greens, winter tees, mud, plugging etc. etc.

We don't even have winter rules! I'm very lucky to play where I do, that's for sure.

Cheers!

If you want to play golf all year round then you have to have the gear.

Yesterday I had the full GG gore-tex suit on, with a GG Insula mid layer over the top of a thermal top and t-shirt. Under the GG trousers I had a pair of 3/4 Helly Hansen thermal leggings and some GG knee high socks (these are great - they are really tight which helps keep the circulation going and really helps with keeping the lower legs and feet warm).
On top I had my woolly hat and GG Insula snood (worth it's weight in gold!).
Stated off with FJ winter gloves and always use a pair of winter mitts between shots. After about 4 holes I managed to just go back to normal golf glove only with the mitts.

The GG stuff is so good because it's so light, not bulky at all. I may have had all those layers on but could still swing with ease.

If you can get all the gear then really there's no reason why golf can't be pleasant in all conditions - like yesterday.

Where do you play? My course is the same, perfectly dry and on full greens 99.99% of the time.

It really does make a difference!

Well my golfing year has got off to a flier with my best ever round. A 74, with 4 birdies, an eagle, and 8 bogies.

This is completely out of character, and I put it down to 2 things:

1 - my new irons, which are for the first time custom-fit to my short concentrated stature
2 - the course being just dry enough that balls don't plug, but just wet enough that I can aim straight at the flag with no concession to bounce, run, roll, drag or anything that normal golf entails. Hit it - it stops.

That's the good bit.

The bad bit? Nobody was there to witness it. I was on my own. This is a huge, unreplicatable disaster.

hehe

Well played! That's a bit like me a few weeks ago, thought I'd get a quick 9 holes in as practice and shot 39. Nobody there to see it!

In fairness, if I'd produced that round in company after declaring a 10 handicap I'd rightly be in the bad-books of whoever I'd routed!

At least Dick Turpin had the decency to wear a mask.

It's all part of the fun, as is the disaster I'll shoot next week. Every single one of us is capable of a par on any hole in the land. The only trick is stringing them together.

That course looks gorgeous!

I play in the middle of the country in Bedford http://www.thebedfordgc.com/pages.php/.

The course has an inland links feel and drains excellently.

Rye is beautiful, I think my friend played Rye with Tom Chaplin (Keane lead singer).

Proper links smile

Yeah, it's really top notch. Yes, Tom Chaplin is a member at Rye. Good golfer!

Yours looks nice as well, so much better if you can play it properly all year!

There are some lovely pictures of Rye on Getty Images:
