Cheers pal!

Glasses came, very nice. Lovely to play with in the bright sunshine.

I played like crap though. 17 points on the front nine followed by 5 horrible holes in a row - 27 points total.

Is anyone else a slow starter when they play?

It doesn't seem to matter what I do, whether I warm up on the range first or not, I can't seem to get going until about the 5th or 6th hole. It's really frustrating me now as that's the only thing stopping me breaking into the 70s.

I was +1 on the back 9 today, but ruined it by being +10 after the front 9.

Doesn't really tell us the whole story mate. Why aren't you scoring as well on the front 9? More than say 18 putts? How many fairways and greens missed? Could simply be down to needing some time on and around the practice greens before a round??

It's typically just hitting poor irons into greens. It takes me a few holes before I start to hit the ball as crisply as I can, and it costs me 4 or 5 shots on the front 9 usually, mostly through missed greens.

Maybe try and cement a 'proper' pre shot routine and hit 10-20 balls on the range using that pre-shot routine? Set number of practice swings, make sure you're aligned correctly & aiming properly. I rarely warm up before a round, but when i do i usually only hit wedges. My full swing is pretty consistent so maybe instead of whacking 30 drives, limit yourself to only 2 wedges and maybe an 8 and 7 iron? just different things to try that might help kick start your round?

I think ultimately that's my only option. I do have a pre shot routine on the course, but tend to just hit a few shots on the range to loosen my back up. From now on I'll hit balls on the range in a fashion that mirrors what I do in the course.

Was really just wondering who else has the problem of getting going.

My short game is pretty good these days, and my putting is pretty much always average but never disastrous. Definitely room for improvement, but I would say it's holding me back.

Just something to try that might help! I'm the exact opposite as it goes, not sure if it's down to concentration for me personally but i almost always score better on the front 9. Golfs a funny old game!

Anyone playing this weekend?

I'm waiting to hear back about playing the Addington next saturday with a chap from work, anyone played it? Have any tips / opinions?

I'm the same most of the time. The more important the competition, the slower I am at starting. This leads me to believe that it's a mental thing. Being tense and thinking too much is not good for the golf swing. Over the winter I've developed an attitude of 'let's play golf' when on the first tee and my results have improved. So am now looking to take that same attitude into the summer medal season i.e. keep the practice for the range and play golf when on the course.

I'm the same but mine is very much about chipping and putting, it takes me a while to get the feel of the greens etc. but then I am fairly new to the sport so I don't have a lot of memories to fall back on.

I think it might well be tension and over thinking with me. Once I relax I start hitting the ball well. I guess getting those first few tense shots out the way on the range can't be a bad idea.

I'm playing the same course Again tomorrow with a few of the guys I'm at the belfry with next week as a final warm up round. I took a full 7 day membership there this week. They let me have it not far off half price if I paid up front. Very happy with that!

Played the Cathedral Course at Ramside again yesterday. Interesting day!

First 3 holes were played in what can only be described as a pea souper. Standing on the par 5 first, couldn't see more than 80 yards ahead!

Definitely have to be some form of mountain goat to cope with the terrain - between holes 11 and 12, there must be a drop / walk down of 60 yards in height. Unfortunately, from holes 14 to 15, you have to climb up said 60 yards...

Also, there seemed to be a lot of very mobile water hazards on the course, jumping out to claim my ball with disappointing regularity.

So, not my best round but also, still loved it.

I really enjoy reading all the reports of people's rounds on different courses.
I havent played for about 5 years now I took the game up in 2007 as substitute for cycling as I was getting too old.
I took it up as a "Sport" took lessons practiced but I found most golfers of my age just wanted a round of golf and a pint afterwards and I enjoyed their company and the pint but in the end it wasnt what I wanted.I was never going to be great but I got to single figures.
The other thing is playing on the same course two or three times a week gets boring.

Played on Saturday in some pretty crazy wind, again! I started off slightly 'average' par, bogey, double...but then from nowhere hit 5 pars in a row...should of finished the front 9, 3 over at worst...ended up 6 over after a disaster triple on the 9th. Downhill from there on the back. Only managed another 3 pars. Really need to learn how to keep my concentration for 18 holes. It's driving me mad! Stopped me breaking 80, instead i hit a 16 over par 85...Suggestions on a postcard?

Anyone else play this weekend?

I've just booked a weekend away with the Mrs at the Fairmont St Andrews for our anniversary. I may have to get an early morning game sorted out whilst I'm up there. It'd be a shame to visit and not play at the "home of golf".

Yeah, you could see how much it meant to him. A 63 to tie, then 2 birdies in a playoff is pretty special!

87 yesterday for me. Mostly solid round but stuck 2 in the water on the SI-1 par 5 5th for a 9, then made double on 16 and 17. I was a bit tired and hungover though.

Off to the belfry tomorrow morning. I'm getting quite excited. I just hope i play somewhere near the standard I know I can.

I had a brilliant session at the range on Friday afternoon just working through my bag from drives, long irons, pitches and chips. It was so good that I woke up on Saturday and decided to follow up on my hot streak with another range session (I didn't have time for a proper round).
Well... Absolutely terrible. So bad infact that I managed to snap my driver shaft.

I'm playing 9 holes after work tomorrow and dreading it already. I feel like I don't even know how to hold and swing a club properly anymore so I need to focus on not focussing! i.e. when on the course, let muscle memory do the work. I know that the tee box is not the place for trying to work out kinks in my swing but it'll be difficult not to overthink when the swing doesn't 'feel' right.

Whenever i have a 'bad' range session i go right back to basics....grip, posture, ball position. Then i consciously try to swing at half pace until it starts to come back. Then build it up from there. Also, when struggling like that, loft is definitely your friend. If you're struggling to hit a 7/8 iron then there's no point trying to whack a driver...the lower loft and longer shaft is extra difficulty you don't need at that point in time IMO.

Popped down the local pro shop at lunch, another £279 poorer after purchasing a new scotty X5 dual balance, a work of art and will hopefully improve my putting!
