I think I have come to the conclusion that I cannot play under pressure. 12 of us went to play the Albatross course at Golf National. The course is the venue for the 2018 Ryder Cup and despite a lot of work going on, it was in great condition. I had a complete meltdown and came away having scraped 19 points. Driver was all over the place, could not get my irons to do anything and 3 putted nearly everything.

After lunch we did a a 9 hole scramble in teams of 3 on the easier Aigle course. With only a couple of exceptions my shot was the best and we were 5 under at the end. Drive straight and long, irons to green and 1 putt.

So how do I manage my brain?

I don't know.

It's easy to tell you to 'relax it's only a game' and 'treat it like you're mucking about with mates' but it's not that simple in reality.

You can buy the latest set of carlos fandago clubs, use the most expensive balls and spend every day at the range but the brain and emotions have more to do with consistent quality play than any other aspect.

[Twice a year] Read Dr. Bob Rotella's 'Golf is not a game of perfect'. He's a smart guy with a lot of practical wisdom.

I very rarely buy into the physcological help book things but the Doc Bob books are really good.

I've got "putting out of your mind" on the go at the moment.

The tidy has turned.

Beat my old man at golf yesterday and he wasn't happy. Lessons have given me a new swing which in terms of distance he really cant match now.

Loved every second of it. Highlight was him doffing two tee shots into the lake on a tricky par 3. I dropped my within 2 foot and sank a simple putt.

I may have won but my shank on the last is still bugging me.

I'm still nowhere near as accomplished as many (most / all) players on here.

However I'm finding that simply playing more and using one's brain a little really does result in scores coming down. I've got rid of the lob wedge and started chipping and running with the 7i alot more, stopped trying to play fancy shots out of the rough when a simple chip back to the fairway works wonders. Also working really hard on keeping my eyes on the ball as i strike it - i've got a horrible habit of pulling up before i've even hit the ball resulting in lots of balls being topped.

Played 9 after work the other night and finished on 46. I'm usually somewhere around the 53 mark - so pleased with that.

Played 18 on Friday on a course i've never played, almost went home after the 2nd, carding a 10 and a 9 on the first two holes.

However finished on 102 with 34 points. Shame about the first two - should really have hit about 90.

Well done for winning, but jeez you sound competitive! hehe

Played Royal St George's yesterday afternoon in a club match. Shot 91 (32 points stableford).

Actually played some decent golf, yet managed to lose 5&4! The guy I was playing went out in 37 - not a lot I could do against that. He was playing off 11 but he played some great golf.

The famous 4th hole with the giant bunker I absolutely murdered - creamed my driver and left myself a nice little 125yd wedge to the green. A nice par.

Condition of the course I thought was pretty average - no way near as good as our own course at Rye. I think it takes a lot of traffic though with visiting Americans, etc.
Also has the M25 of public footpaths running right through it and right alongside the 1st hole. Actually very annoying.

Simple question this one Rosscow. What app are you using there or is that pen and paper and updated later? Ive tried a few and all of them are a bit shonky at times.

GolfShot. had it for 4 years, it's pretty damn good. Worth the £20 fee all day long.

Having said that, I'm taking delivery of a nice new shiny Garmin S5 tomorrow.

https://buy.garmin.com/en-GB/GB/prod512475.html

You just can't beat having the yardages instantly - getting a phone/GPS unit/laser out all the time is bloody annoying (for me anyway) and takes too bloody long.

If anyone is interested, that game at St George's was played in 3 hours. I don't think a game of 2 ball golf should take longer than 3.5 hours.

Golfshot is indeed excellent, but I thought it was free no?

I didn't pay for it!

Be interesting to see how the Garmin rates alongside the Skycaddie TOUCH
Have owned the TOUCH since Xmas and it's a brilliant device.

Again, I was interested in the Skycaddie gear but unfortunately their watches leave a lot to be desired.

I just didn't want a hand held device of any kind, instant yardages front back and middle right there on my wrist is what I really want. The S5 gives me that but also enables me to move the pin and lists hazards. I'm hoping it's going to be good!

I think they have a free version and a 'pro' version - when I bought it originally over 4 years ago it was about £18 so presumed you still have to pay for the full version?

I may be wrong though!

Either way it's a great app.

My other half was going to get me a golf GPS last year but I have found I don't like wearing a watch while playing golf.

Ill give golf shot a go, but the battery life on my S5 phone will get rinsed.

Played Addington on Saturday. Think it's a top 35 course in the UK? Absolutely beautiful. Stunning views. However, the greens had been rolled so weren't playing quite as well as i expected. Pared the first and well, it went downhill from there. Scored 23 points. Easily the worst I've played in a long time. Managed to hit my driver to pin high just off the green on a 344 yard Par 4. Only to chip and then 3 putt from 12ft. Summed my day up really.

Be keen to get a review on your watch Rosscow. Been toying with the idea of getting a GPS watch or a Rangefinder for a little while!

I would have been disappointed too. The only time I've been there was to watch when Clarkey won the open. The course was, of course, immaculate. I guess if I was going to play there I would expect it to be the same. Especially considering what they charge!

Well, fortunately it didn't cost me anything so I shouldn't complain!

Just a case of not being quite as good as thought it would be, and also that I'm spoilt at Rye.
