Forgot to say, hit one of the best drives of my life last night. On the par 5 17th, 306 yards with a strong cross wind!

left myself 175, hit a 6 which was too much (fairways and greens starting to firm up now) but hit the flag with my chip shot and left myself with a 12" birdie putt!

Also, sooooo much better having the GPS watch on - instant yardages, no faffing required. Recommended.

Reasons to be cheerful. 1-2-3.

Tried a few different clubs out the Srixon and Callaways felt little different to my current clubs. Also the numbers didn't seem to change as much as I hoped on the launch monitor.

Went with the Nikes in the end as I saw and felt a difference. My AOA dropped and the peak height was averaging in the high 20s.

Had to add an Inch to each club as well as 2degrees. Went for Golf pride with 3 wraps for the grip. Oh and I thought Id need a standard flex shaft but my pro has made the call and put me on a stiff shaft as he feels the way im progressing will benefit from it.

What Nike irons did you go for?

An extra 1" - I presume you are quite tall!?

After a long discussion I went for the Vapor Speeds as the next set up would have been for vanity's sake. Only got 4 to PW coming so I will be looking at wedges in the coming weeks. The PW measures at 52degrees so I will need one more wedge at least. Decided that in the coming months I will add hybrid 3 and a Driver. Possible a wood of some sort.

Im 6'1 so I need the length to help my positioning

Also been given another putter to test. Method half mallet alongside the Ghost Spider full mallet. Really need to get settled on a putter. So going to play over the weekend with both in the bag.

That can't be right, a PW is usually around the 46 degree mark? In fact these irons are probably quite strong so would suggest an even lower loft?

Edit: indeed, your wedge should be 44 degrees?

Interesting how you have an extra 1" - I am 6'2" and have an extra 1/2" on my shafts. I guess it comes down to arm length and posture as well.

Your right on the PW angle. I should explain the extra length a little better. My current clubs are half an inch shorter than standard. So ill be using clubs an inch longer than my current clubs. If that makes sense.

Yes, that sounds a little better!

So you'll be 1/2" longer than standard, same as me!

That's the one fella.

I will definatly need another wedge to start and depending on how I progress maybe a 3rd.

Im still stunned at the difference a stiff shaft made. Same head speed fairly sizeable distance gains.

My Pro is very pleased with my peak heights mind. I should be able to take stuff on a little better once I get the new clubs.

Fitted clubs make a hell of a difference, especially when you add better technique.

I'm surprising myself at the moment - 300 yard drives, 190 yard 6 irons, etc. just feels abnormal!

Was given a set of better balls to use too. As im supposed to be at a level where I can make use of a "better" ball.

I still wont use em though as my head says NO

What balls do you usually use, and what 'better' balls were you given to use?

I think like many hackers, Ive ended up with a massive collection of brands and most of them are dog st sports direct balls. I think I need to split what I have and make a choice on one ball once I get to that level.

The ball pockets of my bags are just a jumble.

Dump them all in a bucket and use them as practice balls - I have a 10 litre paint can that I use to take my balls to the range in the evenings.

Choose a semi-premium ball and buy a load of lake balls from eBay or similar. For example 18 months ago I bought 100 'Pearl Grade' Callaway Hex Chrome for £90 delivered from eBay.

I've probably got about 10 left (I lost quite a few in the first 6 months hehe )

Until you're pretty good, high spin balls are going to hinder not help. Yes, it's useful getting grip on the green, and lovely for the ego getting a bit of draw-back, but...

The one major ball-flight problem facing normal golfers isn't how soft they are landing, but an accidental hook / draw / slice / fade that you didn't intend.

All will be exacerbated by a ball with a high spin-rate.

That's an interesting point, and one I hadn't thought of.

I wasn't suggesting that Airweaz should be buying ProV1's, but something like a Srixon AD333 would be fine.

For me, the distance balls (Titleist Velocity, DT Solo, Taylormade Burners, Callaway Warbirds, etc.) don't give much in the way of feel and I really don't find them confidence inspiring.

For what it's worth the next batch of balls I buy will probably be Titleist NXT Tour S, I've been impressed with a sleeve I won a few weeks ago and they can be had at very reasonable prices compared to the ProV1's, etc.

I also like playing a ball that I can get a yellow version of smile

I used to use Lake Balls but then I switched to Pro V1's I figured I couldn't afford to lose too many of them and it sort of improved my concentration
