France also starts handicaps at 54. Don't worry it will drop like a brick as you get more skill and confidence.

Wonder where I'll be at with mine.. Clubs have been bought, lessons have been had and I put in a 117 yesterday on a Par 69 course. Made the commitment for membership now so I'm sure that I can only start to get better! Definitely need to work on putting... LOTS of 3 and 4 putts which were not helping when I was getting on the green reasonably well.

ETA - Just ordered the book mentioned further back to help with that putting. Knew making a return to the forum was a good idea!

Been having lessons (again!) for 6 months and it's finally starting to come together... MUCH straighter off the tee and I can actually predict where my irons are more likely to go now biggrin

Played yesterday and shot my best ever round of 74 (5 over) for 44 points playing off 13. What I was most pleased about was scoring par on all 9 holes coming back even though at least a couple should have been birdies. Just have to make this the average round now rather than a once in a lifetime occurrence biggrin

I think one of the things that really helped was playing off the white tees. The extra length meant that usually I was coming up a bit short of the crap rather than landing right in it.

Any so called "streaky" players out there figured out how to become less, well, streaky?

I've been playing pretty well this year, shot a couple of 78's in practice rounds and generally been striking the ball really well, but when it comes to a medal it's all been going wrong. Case in point at the weekend, got off to a fairly slow start (level 5's, 2 over handicap by the 4th), then had a couple of birdies in a row to bring it back to 1 under, stayed there for a couple of holes, then started driving into the cabbage (both Driver and 3 wood) 3 holes in a row, playing off 9 that was the card gone.

I seems for 14 of the 18 I can play to around 5, but the other 4 holes I spray it all over the place or have a silly shot resulting in shooting 85. Anyone had anything similar and found a way to fix, as it's really starting to get annoying.

Take less club off the tee? Driver isn't always needed. Whats the point of hitting driver down any par 4 that's under 400 yards? Unless you can reach the green? As long as you can hit a 4 iron well enough, there really isn't any need. Go for a round without your driver, see how you get on? If you strike the ball that well, then it'll show up almost straight away...Do you have a proper pre shot routine? Visualizing your shots before executing them etc?

I do tend to leave the Driver in the bag on the tighter holes where there is either a large amount of cabbage present, which works well on practice rounds, but then in a medal I am sadly just as capable of taking a 3 wood or 1/2 iron for safety, then putting that in the cabbage as well. Sadly don't feel like I can go any further down the irons, as with my set I can only hit a 4 iron about 185, which leaves a long way to go on some of the longer par 4's.

I think it's a mental thing, especially considering during the pre shot routine in practice rounds I visualise exactly what I want the ball to do, in medals, I visualise exactly what I DON'T want to do. Anyone got any good books/Youtube vids etc that cover the mental side of things?

I'm playing 36 holes this weekend with the first 18 at Silvermere, ahs anyone played there before? It looks nice and I've heard good things. The closing holes look a bit dangerous though, I'll be sure to pack a lot of balls.

"Golf is not a game of perfect" by Bob Rotella is a good book for the mental side of the game.

Best I've read was "Golf Tough"

My guess is that having got the round on track, you got ahead of yourself and started to think of the holes coming up and what you needed to do to turn it in to a winning card. As your card becomes better and better you need to shove those thoughts out of your mine and stick to the old adage of, only think about the shot that you're about to play. This is particularly important after we've just hit a poor shot as the next shot needs to be the correct, high percentage shot rather than the low percentage miracle shot which is often the one that leads to a big score on a hole.

I think your guess may well be right, as it's normally shortly after thinking "I'm on a good score here" that it all unravels. Definitely need to work on the mental approach I think. Just gets a bit frustrating when I try the percentage play (3 wood down the middle) that it goes wrong. It is a silly game, really smile

Thank you for all your suggestions and book ideas folks, much appreciated.

Had a lesson on Sunday afternoon to try and sort out my tee shots.

Played 9 holes after work last night - what a difference!

Of 3 woods off the tee, all 3 were absolute peaches right down the middle.

of 3 drivers off the tee, 1 was an absolute monster straight down the middle and the others were very good (just a yard off the fairway).

Result? 4 pars and 2 bogeys (should have had a birdie).

Very happy!

I didn't play the par 3's very well, but I'm not going to dwell on that at the moment!

Brave man going for a lesson mid season - I know a lot of people that wouldn't go near one of these for fear of wrecking their swing. Maybe they just need better pros smile

Glad it worked out for you though, always satisfying when it does.

I try and have one very 6 or 8 weeks - I see my swing as constantly evolving, little tweaks here and there. I did the big swing re-build 18 months ago!

Silvermere is OK... 1st 5/6 holes and the last 2 are good (the holes from the original 9 hole course), the section over the road not as good, but some decent holes. Main issue I had there was length of round - pay and play, so VERY busy on a weekend, and a round could be easily 5 hours plus if you didn't get out early doors.

Hope you play well and enjoy.
