Very good, and looks like more to come from that 200free, considering the 100free speed. Must be very proud. How old is he?

Im also racing this weekend at Millfield. Ive just moved up age brackets, but I know ill be swimming down in the 25-34 range.
Which means ill be up against the youtubers again...

Ah, do the Veales get Sonny and his mates out for Devon in the Intercounties then? Makes sense - you might be in one of Sonny's vids - fame and fortune await.

Good stuff, well done - more to come on his 200 free?
Possibly, he's not ever been known for his stamina, first time i've seen him kick a full 200 laugh

National Masters Intercounties this weekend at the London Aquatic Centre (Olympic pool). My first year organising my county team which has been a journey trying to contact every man, woman and their dog around the county and try and persuade them to swim, from pensioners to students at the local uni to Olympic medallists.

DB - when is your lad 18 and does he fancy a second claim membership to an Oxfordshire club so he can swim for my team? ;-)
Organising teams is a nightmare isn't it? All the best with that one...

He's 18 on boxing days and honestly, he loves his swimming, if he wasn't involved in Suffolk, I'd lay money that he'd travel to swim for someone else...bear it in mind ;-)

Sonny had Reg swimming in their team for Masters for the record didn't he? I enjoy Sonny's content, the lad can certainly still swim a bit. Anything where he can promote himself, he'll be there.

On a side note, Brett Hawke's podcasts past few months have really improved in content for those that like to bore themselves to death with being in the pool and then listening to it after.

No doubt we will be in his videos this year.
I was in his video last year, but i cant watch it, as I look disgusting burger

I didnt swim too bad yday. Slipped on the back start, so 29.4
Fly was reasonable 27.2. Still to get back to my sub 27 pace, and really havent got the feel for the stroke anymore.
Free was a couple of low 24.1/24.2 in relays, and then 24.8 in the individual as my last event of the day. Need to be getting back to sub 24 really.

As alot of us said yesterday, we really do need to supplement pool work with more S&C to maintain the sprint speed.

I think im going to try a few 200s next year. Probably 200IM, Free, back & dare i say it... Fly

So proud of the kids last night, who absolutely smashed their swimming club Sprint 1 night (#2 in two weeks).

Son’s first event, and even in the warm up he swam further than he ever has without stopping (25 m prior; 400 m now!!).

Daughter has really struggled with anxiety the last two years, but absolutely nailed it this year, and outperformed those two years older then her in both freestyle, fly and 100 m IM.

Very proud dad vibes today biggrin
Sprint 2 complete.

Son ended up with two comfortable 2nds and a 3rd (the winner of all is an absolute rocket! yikes ).

Daughter ended up very nearly on the podium in free and fly at 25 m and 50 m, despite being so young in her group. Her 25 m free is too close to mine for comfort! (16.97 at 11 years old in December.) She has come away so positive and proud of her achievements; an amazing turnaround from last year's struggles cloud9.

Some nice numbers there, sub 24 is seriously quick. Only so much resistance water can give you. If you have access to buckets/parachutes/cords (or sponges on a rope) they're useful tools, but S&C is the key for speed, especially when 'fully matured'.

Love to hear they're enjoying themselves, 17 for a 25 isn't shabby at all, defo some speed there. My niece started in September (quit gymnastics) and she's the same age, we were over the moon with her 20. for a 25.

Keep us updated :-)

I/We have introduced parachutes in the last 3-6months. As you say, when fully matured, its also trying to avoid shoulder injuries.

Fantastic! Im really looking forward to that stage and having that feeling from the other side of the pool deck.

My kids are only 4/6, and we are looking forward to seeing how they progress 5+ years.
(If they really want to do it....)
My wife also competed at a similar level to me in her teens...so no pressure kids!

Swimmer genetics! They're born to do it surely? lol!

fwiw, I desperately wanted my boy to be a footballer, sadly he had two left feet and one of those was on backwards.

He did, Reg went something like a 1.49 on his 200 free and 49 on the 100 at National Masters.

I enjoy Sonny's content too, he's genuinely enthusiastic about all swimming. I listen to the odd Brett Hawke podcast, along with the Masters one and Propulsion Swimming.

South East Masters Intercounties was a high standard yesterday - we came last as we do every year, but less last than in previous years. The team were great and willing to swim as many events as I threw their way - our 81 year old male swimmer did 8 events in 3 hours. No wonder he fell asleep in the back seat on the way home.

Good times there. We were also discussing S&C yesterday. A teammate of mine has gone into S&C big time over the past year and logged a lifetime PBs on 50 and 100 breast age 45 at Sheffield.

Great to hear from other Proud Dads on here! And like all kids, they’re all different biggrin

PB Jnr1 started racing when she was 7 but only at her local club - was enough for her and she is still a v good freestyler even though she’s been out of squads for a couple of years, can still put in a good showing at the school comp.

PB Jnr3 doesn’t really like swimming but we live near the ocean so he’s got no choice until he can do 1km in the pool! Far better footballer…

PB Jnr2, well, the little trip to AIS appears to have snowballed as we’ve been asked to fill out a few forms with “IPC Athlete Agreement” and “World Para Swimming” written across the top. A follow up call said to be ready to go to Melbourne in Feb as there’s a possibility she could be selected to undergo International Classification when the World Para Series is in town.

We think st might just have got real.

Right up to the point where she speaks biggrin

On that point I don’t know if she’d have had the same opportunities in the UK. Over here, swimming is pushed relentlessly such that most kids who live within 20km of the ocean or near a large metro area are proficient swimmers by the time they’re 7, and just about all swim schools have some form of informal racing or connection to a local club. Also the school swimming competitions provide lots of opportunity to race at different levels. And it was those last two things together that got PB Jnr2 on her way.

Whilst it is several decades since I was at school in the UK, I don’t recall anywhere near as much opportunity, presume this has changed?

Well, I’d say there’s little to no emphasis on swimming in schools, other than to try and make sure you don’t drown if you fall in. This is from when my own kids were at school (they’re mid to late 20s), up to today - I’ve worked in a school for the last seven years.

Thanks DB

I’d also note that perhaps contrary to popular belief, swimming isn’t always a cheap sport. The idea that all you need is some swimwear and a pair of goggles changes once it becomes more serious. Kit and travel are two additional expenses, but also the time it takes to get kids to training and competitions just escalates.

Sure, we find a way where we can, but Jeez, there’s a stload of effort behind the scenes! So, chapeau to all those that get this stuff done, cos it’s bloody hard.

[Written whilst sat in my car at 0500 having just dropped PB Jnr2 at the pool and now waiting for the rain to stop so I can go cycling…biggrin]

Thought I’d also add this about this morning’s training itself, as PB Jnr2 was quite puffed and wanted to tell me all about it…

This morning’s session was 2hrs. After stretching/activation the warm up was around 1.6km and the main set was 3.6km of IM program, much of it at race pace. Then there was a cool down of 1.0km of various strokes.

Total swim 6.2km, with one arm. Then home for a shower and packed off to school for the day.

Note that PB Jnr2 is not in the club’s Open Squad, so doesn’t do their top level of training…

6.2km in an age group program is a st load of metres! How hold is PB Jnr2?

Also, big nod on the expense.

I did a calculation a number of years ago over 3 months, I calculated all costs (so fuel included - training fees, race entries, equipment, lost fking bottles hehe) and it was averaging at £500 a month - 2 swimmers.

So yeah, not cheap when you start to take it seriously.
