Would you rather be at 253/5 than 250/0?

We only need a draw to win the series, it's NZ that need to chase the game. See off the new ball, wear their bowlers out and then up the rate. It's called test cricket because it's a test. A series of tests. Chef is too negative as a captain, but to suggest that we'd be better off losing five wickets for a extra three runs is a view that I'm struggling to understand.
I would rather be 250/0, however, in this test, with NZ scoring 350 in their 1st innings and day 3 looking like a washout the score needed to move along quicker. I agree England only need a draw to win the series but surely the aim of a test is to win smile

Thats not a good start, as they keep on saying it is a batting pitch there could be a result I cant see England forcing the win unless our bowling rips them apart! Hate going for the draw as we should be always trying for the win!

Not sure it is a really true batting pitch, balls at Headingly occasionally fly of the surface, just seen one to Buttler that really leapt.

I think that is why once you get in you tend to score, but getting picked up early happens quite a bit.

Boult just bowled a ball that Harmison would have been proud of :-)

Stuart Broad, I take it all back, great knock today, well played. Hope that is the end of your yips after that horrible bouncer.

Shame it is only a 2 match joke series. Not sure what the point is of a 2 match test series tbh.

Like so many things today, it all comes down to money. Not that many people will pay to watch NZ. I did so many years ago and saw Rodney Towse take all day to score the first third of his double century. Made Boycott look like Chris Gayle. I suspect that the next time they come they'll be able to point to the excitement that they've generated and get another test.

Poor finish. Still, with a new ball due and a bit of sunshine for when we bat, what can possibly go wrong smile

Interesting article on Cricinfo talking about the admission from Cook that he has been using a freelance coach, Gary Palmer, to improve his batting.

It raises questions over the usefulness of the National Cricket Performance Centre at Loughborough and the England batting coach, Mark Ramprakash, when the England captain decides to go elsewhere for help.

Cricinfo article said:
Palmer and Pont (Ian Pont, a freelance bowling coach) have, in recent years, been consistent in their belief that coach development in England is lagging well behind the development of the world game. Both have suggested that the ECB's reliance on coaching protocols that are out-dated is holding back its players and that there is too much emphasis on fitness and not enough on skill.

Think we will be chasing a few too many here, especially as the bowling is moving quite a bit.

Still, hope we go down fighting all the way

IAN BELL, England expects....

Might find himself out the team if he goes cheap today

Kiwis piling on the runs here. I wonder what lead they'll be happy with?

Agree the England fielding has been a bit ordinary today and yesterday.

75 runs in 9 overs this morning. 420 lead. If the game wasn't already over at breakfast it is now.

It's going to be a big ask. I'm guessing that they'll bat till near lunch. 5 sessions to bowl them out.

at least the longer they bat, the less sessions we have to bat. Not that it will probably matter anyway

I reckon they'll put us in when they have a lead of 470. We will never knock those runs off.
