Wimbledon. What's it all about?

I know there are Tennis threads but I thought I'd get a bigger audience here and it doesn't relate to the quality of Tennis.

Without jumping through hoops how easy/hard is it to get in and see a couple of matches? Do you have to get up at bonkers o clock and queue surrounded by women of a certain age or, without piling in on corporate hospitality is there a reasonable way if asking it in.

I'm not talking about a final but games on outside courts etc.

Are there better days than others, how much is it, can you rock up later and get in?

As I understand it, to get a court-side ticket, there is (was) a ballot. To get in to wander around and soak up the atmosphere plus see it on the big screen on <whatever> Hill, then I think that's just a case of queuing.

We get tickets almost every year. Enter the ballot, it's free. We also belong to club that gets tickets so they have their own ballot. The public ballot has yielded more than the club ballot over the years. If you are going to queue up I reckon early in the tournament, middle of the week would be best. I've never done it myself.

I can only go on my experience of recent years. Twice I began queuing at 5am on the middle Saturday.
Both times I did this, I was just about able to get onto Court 12!

So yes - you have to get up very early. Be aware, as well, that unreserved seating means that if you get a seat or a good viewing spot, you have to stay there for hours unless you think you can find something better.

mrspablo entered the ballot in 2011 for the first time, we got centre court tickets on the first tuesday and saw.... Federer, Serena Williams, Djokovic and Sharapova... it was quite a day for first-timers (although mrsp follows tennis quite closely) we havent been back since despite entering the ballot in 2012 and 2013.

Thanks for the pointers. Next year (later this) I'm going to enter the ballot.

I'm not a Tennis fan but I'd enjoy the occasion, not enough to queue from 5am though so the ballot seems to be my best route.

I bet it really is a good day.
