fascinating... any idea how it gets such a clean cut at the base of the hole / core?

The blade is designed to slightly "compress" the core. When they give it a part twist it sheers off the bottom enough to come out clean.

A big factor is also the quality and make up of the greens themselves, you couldn't do this in your lawn!
