Stones gone for 52, Eng 294-6

Starc has the last two wickets, he has bowled well in the last 30mins.

Evens day currently.

Great ball from Starc. I'd be a bit worried as an aussie batsman though, the Burnley Express can swing balls around corners.

That was yet another big save from Root, he's done jolly well getting England out of a pickle.
He really is a joy to watch with the bat isn't he?

Cracking knock there by Root - Moeen playing like it's a 20/20!

And why not? - Cracking stuff!

i think it's been a great day for England...especially after the position we were in.

However, this pitch is pretty poor. I can only assume we've done it to nullify the Aussie quicks. I mean brand new balls are bouncing twice through to the keeper!

I've been out all afternoon, left home when we were about 50/3. So glad that Root has done what he does best. Just hope our tail wags for a decent while.

If we can scrape to 400 I will be very happy considering the sit. after 3 down.

Ashes cricket; the ultimate test cricket.

Fascinating

So 343-7 at stumps.

I'd say 350 was par, 400 good.

England are left with Ali at the crease, Broad on 7.

I'd say an evens day, Jos getting out 8mins before stumps was poor of him and if he had been there at the end with only 6 down then England's day.

Fascinating tomorrow, but remember you don't win the Ashes on the first day but you can sure as hell stand a bloody good chance of losing them!

We came close to losing them in the first session.

Having said that, there's still a long way to go in this test, let alone the others.

Looks to be another cloudy day forecast tomorrow so jimmy A might get some decent conditions...Friday looks like a much better batting day.

Knock 400 up, put them in 20 mins before lunch, let the Express at them, Australia out for tea biggrin

It's not a had state of affairs when you have someone like Moen Ali coming in at number 8. His average doesn't really match his talent.

Correct. Last think we wanted to see was Mitchell Johnson off to a flyer. I suspect that the groundsman is enjoying a nice dinner on Alistair right now....

Hmm score ok, but I think fifty shy of where we'd like to be for the innings. Still with Cook, Lythe and Bell out for less than 30 between them, it is OK

I maintain that Morgan should be playing four, and Bell should be playing for another team.

No doubt he will spank a classy 200 at some point, but these days He is too inconsistent.

Great drop by Haddin.....

England's day at the Disneyland of test cricket. Worse than the Mickey Mouse venue at Chester-le-Street.

Root did what a good bat does - makes the fielding side pay for mistakes.

A joke that there's no test at Headingley - I guess you have to pay the ECB for the privilege of hosting cricket now that it's a business.

+1

Could have been a lot worse, but Root proving that attacking batting (and a spot of luck) is where it's at.

Tomorrow will be very interesting,

A couple of short ones from Mitch J up Broad's nostrils and then a fullie into the left ankle again, would make it very interesting

I agree to some extent. Still, it will be interesting to see if the England attack is as toothless as that of the Crims, especially since they had very good bowling conditions for the entire first session.

Could have been oz's day but for Haddins drop. Who is next in line for the gloves ? IMO Cardiff's ground is horrible to look at , doesn't look like a test match ground. I believe thecWelsh government pay a large part of the test match fee.

fk off you tts, Sophia Gardens is a lovely little ground. OK it's not Lord's but there's something very special about walking along the river into the ground. It's also in the heart of a vibrant capital city well used to handling large crowds with the Millennium around the corner, so it's brilliant for getting pissed after the day's play. And I'll be there on Saturday doing just that. So do one, muppets.

Onto the game, a vital recovery led by Root (what a cricketer he is now!) but we won't know what a good score is until the crims have had a dig. I rather suspect they'll get a big one on this deck. Much like last time.

Whatever, would like to see Root piling on the agony to a bowling attack worn down by a century opening stand from the skipper and 2/3 - not always coming in 3 down and sub 50.

Still at least he can do it, unlike Bell - who just folds up these days whenever the team are in a spot.

Agree though, would not be surprised if the Crims go 500+ in the innings.
