One more Test for Lyth. If he doesn't score well then I'd drop him for the 5th.
So once again I am going to defend Lyth on here, it is a big step up in class from county to test, and the Aussies are a tough test for any Batsman, not like Cook is exactly piling on the runs either. Takes time to become a great opener, Lyth has the talent, now he needs to develop the character. I think he will make a good score and not look back.
Keep on with him, this series and the next.
What's led to Australia's alarming decline as a sporting nation? They used to be great at loads of sports like golf, tennis, rugby, swimming etc etc but now they're just crap. Have they concreted over the playgrounds or something?
Worst thing is that once this dire lot retire or get dropped, there's no one younger to replace them. Whilst it's fun to watch in short spells, the ashes is going to have to be changed to a three day format.

Seriously though John, back in the 80s and 90s, you Australians could expect to win at most sports. Now all you're good at is murdering backpackers, drinking and casual racism. johnfm said:
Yeah - no Aussies in contention at the Open the other week, our test side ranked #2, in the Davis Cup semi finals against Scotland, not won anything in hockey for a while...dismal.
So Australia are great at making up the numbers now? And woman's hockey? Advance Australia fair indeed. johnfm said:

I'd be interested to know how you rate the current Aussie squad in comparison to any of the others since 1989.Gargamel said:

Gent's I don't follow so what is the format of play, how many more games etc?
The series is five matches. We have played two with England winning 1 test and Australia winning one test.
This is the third, which looks a close call, but England presently in front
Two more to play over the next month.
I thought we won yesterday?

They're obviously the worst. Just rubbish. Only (still concussed) Rogers and possibly Johnson would get selected, depending on Johnsons fragile mental state. Worse for Australia though is that there are no replacements knocking on the door. Where have they gone? They can't all be too busy drinking and abusing women and foreigners. zygalski said:

I'd be interested to know how you rate the current Aussie squad in comparison to any of the others since 1989.Comparing any squad to that with Warne, McGrath, haydn, Gilchrist & Ponting can only go one way - they were the best test side by light years in that era, to the point that Ashes series were quite dull and a foregone conclusion.
I wouldn't be as quick to dismiss this squad as you lot are to dismiss any English player who hasn't performed for 3 minutes. It takes years to build a solid squad. Hazlewood and Starc are very young and will do well. Cummins & Co in the wings are no mugs either. Warner and Smith can bat a bit. Nevill will prove to be a good replacement for Haddin. This squad had little trouble despatching India and WI. I still expect we will win the series or, at worst, draw it and retain the urn. The only major query will be SA in South Africa - that is a real test coming up.
Main issue is young batting - selecting 35 year old debutants doesn't build a squad.

Getting bored of Boycott. He's supposed to be commentating on the match not complaining or telling us constantly how to do it.
That's for after the match.
He really is s pompous arse. SKY have been great this year, Ricky Ponting has been a surprisingly good commentator, especially with Warne on at the same time. I've enjoyed seeing their 'friendly ribbing' of Nasser Hussain and anyone else. I look forward to next year when Warner will hopefully be given a drink and asked to do some punditry. That's for after the match.
