The Ashes 2015

A really difficult series to call for me. Both sides seem to have a reasonably solid batting line up. Neither side have a world class spinner. They both have two good seamers (Jimmy and Broad + Johnson and Starc) however the 3rd seamer position for both teams isn't quite settled. Think we'll see lots and lots of runs this summer.
I don't think there are any doubts on Hazlewood. I expect Harris retirement has made their job easier re: Siddle. Not sure if anyone is really interested, or even cares, but I was commenting on a thread in our Computers forum about Frames per Second and Monitor Refresh Rates for computer gaming rigs and it got me curious about real world sport vs a console or computer. Biology vs Physics if you like.
Given that Little Ex is an avid hurler (and to be fair he's pretty good at it), he's also pretty handy with a bat too) and of course with us living in the Emerald Isle, we're used to the "Hurling is the fasted game on grass" types of comments, and unfortunately cricket just isn't generally played at school or county level over here.
I recently had a long argument with him along the lines of 'A fast bowler can only generally reach the 80-90mph mark and a good top flight Hurler will regularly hit a Sliotar at 100mph' It got very heated when I tried to point out the distances involved.
Basically your average fast bowler is not really far behind a top flight hurler in the mph stakes
So then I went looking for some 'science' about it all.

Therefore, his judgment must be essentially predictive, based on information available at least 200 ms before the ball reaches him. With a fast bowler, the ball takes about 600 ms to reach the batsman, so the batsman must select an appropriate trajectory for his bat based on information from the first two-thirds of the ball's flight.
Almost unreal isn't it?
Love it - cricket must possibly be the hardest game played on grass (rugby a close second), and tomorrow it all kicks off.
Yay!

The Aussies love the English, you might find it quite strange
'Cos we sent them all down under, with only balls and chains
And when they see the English, they always shout and scream
But when they had the chance to vote they voted for the Queen!
God save your gracious Queen
Long live your noble Queen
God save your Queen
Send her victorious
Happy and glorious
Long to reign over you
God save your Queen

Its a wonderful rivalry of the type that can basically only be had by family Personally I find it rather a "good thing" knowing that the Brits, Aussies & Kiwis will slog at each other till the cows come home on the field of play and you won't find a fag packet between any of us on the field of battle.
How it should be.
How it should be.
