Just read that an Australian fighter, David Browne Jr, has just died after falling into a coma following a fight last Friday. Tragic news and sadly (although I've not seen it confirmed from other sources) seems to have echoes of the Michael Watson situation in respect of insufficient medical facilities...

i read the initial report that he was injured on saturday. reading that initial report it made it sound as if it was a white collar type of affair. While i feel that white collar events are a good way for people to get into the sport later in life rather than the traditional route of joining a club and boxing in the aba's as a youngster..i can't help but feel there are far too many events that are completely unregulated.

When i did a white collar show 18 months ago st john's ambulance were on site should anything have gone wrong, however there were obviously guys on the bill who had far more experience than their opponents. It was worrying that there were a number of bouts where one guy clearly was way overmatched with the inevitable result of him being stopped.badly.
On the card i boxed on most of the bouts were conducted with 10oz gloves and no headguards, and there were a lot of fairly heavy stoppages on the card.

The other thing is that i don't think anyone was tested for anything prior to the bouts.I know i certainly wasn't, which makes you wonder how many fighters on the bill could have been juicing.

i don't know enough about the promotor in the australian bout to comment but for it to take 1 hour to get the guy to hospital is fking crazy. what a waste of a life..all for the sake of robust medical attention at the venue

another report here...

apparently this win would have got him a world ranking.....a fight of this magnitude should surely have had adequate medical resources at ring side??

Boxer David Browne Jr has died in hospital after suffering significant injuries during a boxing match.

A PROFESSIONAL boxer knocked unconscious during a bout in Ingleburn on Friday night has died in hospital.

Davey Browne Jr, a father-of-two, sustained significant head injuries in the 12th and final round of the match at Ingleburn RSL Club last week.

The Campbelltown man was fighting Filipino Carlo Magali for the IBF Pan Pacific Junior-Lightweight title, which would have seen Browne attain a world ranking.

Police released a statement overnight, revealing Browne Jr had died and a report would now be prepared for the Coroner.

Browne Jr’s legs were shaking in the 6th and 11th rounds of the bout after copping a number of heavy hits.

John McDougall, the president of the Australian National Boxing Federation, said this was the first serious injury in NSW in 30 years.

He said Browne, who was ahead on points before he went down, told referee Charlie Lucas he was okay to fight on into the last round.

Mr McDougall also defended the decision for the fight to continue.

“People will say in hindsight the corner shouldn’t have let him come out,” he said.

“If the 11th round had gone a few seconds more there was a possibility he may have stopped it.

“Browne turned and looked at a bit of loose tape of his glove, took his eyes off his opponent, and unfortunately this whistling big right hand hit him flush, he fell down.

“He was out cold before he hit the floor. The crowd of 500 were quite distressed.”

Browne Jr briefly regained consciousness while being treated by doctors at the scene.

Ray Wheatley, Australia’s most senior boxing official, was one of the three judges for the fight.

“It is such a terrible shock,” Wheatley said.

“Only a few weeks ago I was the referee when Davey beat Tom Ford in Narrabri and he looked terrific that night.”

The Camden-born boxer had fought 24 times since his 2005 debut.

He was part of a boxing dynasty that included his father David Browne and brother Tommy Browne, who also fought on the card Friday and is a two-time world title challenger.

Former world champion boxer Daniel Geale took to social media on Saturday to encourage people to support the Browne family through the tough days ahead via a Go Fund Me fundraising page.

“Thoughts and prayers for Davey and his family,” Geale said."

Just pass a thought for his family and children he's leaving behind. Also pass a thought next time you go to insult a fighter, any fighter.

RIP you warrior. Another name on the wall for those who have passed on fighting for us. You'll be missed.

Very sad, reminded me that the Paul Ingle book is out now, must get a copy. We shouldn't forget the risks and sacrifices these men (and some women) make to thrill, motivate and entertain us.

Shots fired!

"Groves is finished and Buglioni will be finished, then I want to conquer Britain. I would destroy James DeGale and if Carl Froch wants his old belt then I will fight him, no question.”

Good news...looks like I'll be going to see this! Being a long-standing valued customer of BoxNation(!), they e-mailed me yesterday to tell me they were giving me a couple of comps for the show! I know the cynics out there will say the tickets can't have been selling that well then, and it's therefore just a way of bumping up the attendance and hoping to encourge a bit of brand advocacy at the same time.

Well, you know what...it's worked! I'm chuffed to bits actually so am happy to say that I heartily enjoy watching BoxNation and I think, for what you get, the subscription fee represents very decent value smile

If a pair of prospect can sell 20,000 tickets in a day I wonder how many would have bought tickets for klitschko v fury if it was held in the UK?

it's sold 60,000 in germany and is a ppv event on sky so you've got to balance extra british interest in fury but less german attendance for wlad....interesting one , german boxing fans don't travel en mass like british fans do but even so......it would have been far too big for the o2....

..........maybe we could have had another wembley stadium fight........i'm not sure if it's true or not but i've heard you can fit 80,000 fkers in there......

I still cannot believe after reading boxing weekly that some boxing people think the whyte v Joshua fight is a 50/50 fight!

I think Joshua will knock him out inside a round if he comes to have a brawl.

If he doesn't brawl he will last another round or so.

It's looking like Joshua is a promising HW. I'd like to see him against a real durable puncher though.

I remember when Khan was starting out and was nursed through a lot of easy fights. Then he met Breidis Prescott and his glass chin was exposed.

Actually Khan is an annoying tt. Having embarrassed himself with the Mayweather fight that never happened he is now papping on about Pacquiao and how he will fight him early in the new year. Admittedly it would be a good fight for Manny but khan doesn't deserve a shot. It seems he's convinced himself he belongs in that higher echelon.

Khan should stop pimping himself and get on with fighting.

All in all, this leads me to think that if he (Groves) is going to make that final step and fulfil his potential, he needs to change his training set-up. I don't actually like saying that because I really think a lot of Paddy Fitzpatrick; of what I've seen of him, I think the way he conducts himself is spot-on and is always worth listening to when interviewed, and clearly the two are close. However, I'm pretty confident that if Groves had been with Adam Booth, he'd now be holding the WBC belt. That's not only based on how he was developing under Booth, but the way that Andy Lee has stepped up from contender to champion since linking with Booth. And, looking elsewhere, I think they'd come up with a way of beating Arthur Abraham, and an evens chance against DeGale, which I don't think he'd have right now. I don't know what the situation is between the two but from what was said around the time of the split, I'd be surprised if a reconciliation was in pipeline any time soon, but there are other possibilities (for example, if Ward moves up to Light-Heavy, maybe working with Virgil Hunter). I just have this nagging feeling that Groves has plateaued and until that's addressed, he'll continue to come up fractionally short at the very highest level...
Really interesting interview with Paddy Fitzpatrick here. Again, I think the way the man conducts himself is exemplary...
