At first I thought ridiculous, now I'm thinking fking ridiculous.

They don't wear head gear and vests anymore either - right?

Amateur boxing provides a route for young lads to gain experience and knowledge in reasonably controlled and safe confines, not just what goes on inside the ring but outside too. The olympics is the main driver from with the amateur game, although I know the ABAs and World champs and this new League thing are also important, if you take the olympics away from amateurs as a motivation you'll damage the sports roots.

Obviously I'll still be watching and would love to see Joshua and Wilder in a 3 round tear up!

Another way to make a mockery of a sport that deserves better than its current plight.

The decision to let pro's fight at the olympics is rather bizarre. Nobody was really pushing for it as far as I could see, so it's one of those if it's not broken don't try to fix it scenarios.

For amateurs it has always been one of the stepping stones into turning pro. In my opinion it should remain that way. To have a blend of pro's vs. amateurs is potentially dangerous given the gulf in experience. It's also conceivable that some of the amateurs could really show up the pros given the different scoring systems used.

Let the pros fight for belts and the amateurs fight for medals.

Nothing on Sky Sports.

ETA: it's on BBC though.

I'd read it was nothing serious!

Sky have some short features planned today starting at 11.30am. Seems to be the lead item on their tv news too.

I grew up watching and wanting to emulate him - can remember begging my dad to let me stay up to see the Frazier fight - so do feel quite sad even though he confounded expectations by lasting until 74.

Should never have taken or been allowed to take those final few fights like the Foreman one - the damage was already apparent and that must have worsened his condition.

Sure there are more impressive records on paper....but when you think that fights like Liston 1, foreman where he was such an overwhelming underdog going in.....to pull out the performances that he did...phenomenal.a great fighter for sure but with what he stood for outside the ring undoubtedly a greater human being

The Foreman one was in 1974. Do you mean the Holmes one?
