Sky have some short features planned today starting at 11.30am. Seems to be the lead item on their tv news too.

I grew up watching and wanting to emulate him - can remember begging my dad to let me stay up to see the Frazier fight - so do feel quite sad even though he confounded expectations by lasting until 74.

Should never have taken or been allowed to take those final few fights like the Foreman one - the damage was already apparent and that must have worsened his condition.
The Foreman one was in 1974. Do you mean the Holmes one?
I meant him living to the age of 74 when people expected he worst so long ago, rather than the date. But also meant the Holmes fight (and pictured Holmes and the documentary of the fight I've seen 3 times) yet still typed Foreman, re. the damage done being worsened. A sad day - 2 heroes fighting each other with a certain and terrible outcome.

The fight I asked to stay up for was the Frazier one - I'm getting old! For younger folk who don't recall Holmes in his pomp, he was also exceedingly brilliant. I still remember his tears at what he'd had to do to Ali. Then the Tyson revenge beating. Conflicted thoughts...

Completely misread that....thought you were saying something completely different!...

Holmes got was coming to him for me... my memory of watching holmes/Ali was that holmes didn't need to put it on him like that...especially as everyone knew(or at least suspected) that he had something wrong with him by that point

Yeah, definitely a great fighter and one of the very best jabs of all time...He should have and could have put an end to that but gave Ali an unnecessarily prolonged beating. That's why tyson went on record saying he'd punish him for it

Its not too surprising that Ali has passed away, but still a bit shocking. One of the most inspiring human being of all time, especially for a lot of black people at the time in America. His poetry, quotes, self belief and determination will be unmatched. A man that will never be forgotten in boxing history. Left the world of sport and boxing with some truly memorable quotes. The greatest of all time. RIP champ.

Yes very interesting... Taken from that article this roll call of Ali's opponents gives you some idea of not just what he achieved in the ring but how he managed to overcome the pitfalls that went along with boxing at a high level in those days...

Tunney Hunsaker, the first opponent, spent nine days in a coma after a bout.

Trevor Berbick, the final opponent, was beat to death with a steel pipe.

Herb Siler went to prison for shooting his girlfriend.

Tony Esperti went to prison for a Mafia hit in a Miami Beach nightclub.

Alfredo Evangelista went to prison in Spain.

Alejandro Lavorante died from injuries sustained in the ring.

Sonny Banks did, too.

Jerry Quarry died broke, his mind scrambled from dementia pugilistica.

Jimmy Ellis suffered from it, too.

Rudi Lubbers turned into a drunk and joined a carnival.

Buster Mathis blew up to 550 pounds and died of a heart attack at 52.

George Chuvalo lost three sons to heroin overdoses; his wife killed herself after the second son's death.

Oscar Bonavena was shot through the heart with a high-powered rifle outside a Reno wehouse.

Cleveland Williams was killed in a hit-and-run.

Zora Folley died mysteriously in a motel swimming pool.

Sonny Liston died of a drug overdose in Las Vegas. Many still believe the Mafia killed him.

that polish guy raised some eyebrows after sparking marco huck (which i din't see) and outpointing steve cunningham (which i did see),,, looks pretty solid but the one i've got my eye on is a ukranian guy called usyk. olympic and worlds gold medalist at amateur and as a pro he's 9-0 with 9 knockouts.

looks really good and i think i read somewhere the other day he is now mandatory for glowacki and his wbo title.

you might also remember that guy mairis breidis i posted up a month or 2 ago knocking manuel charr spark out.....he's looking great as well

with drozd/lebedev and the rest of them i think (unfortunately for bellew) this is as deep as i've ever seen the division
Looks like that one has been agreed now for September.

Also on the Cruiserweight front, I see Enzo Macc is fighting tomorrow night for the EBU title on BoxNation. Apparently, his opponent is #9 with the WBC so a win would almost certainly earn Enzo a ranking with them and therefore would become a potential voluntary defence for Tony Bellew. As a domestic showdown, in principle I think that would be more likely to happen than a fight with Haye...though negotiations between Bellew/Matchroom and Frank Warren would be, erm, interesting!

That's great news about usyk and glowacki.
Enzo macc and bellew would generate a lot of interest....not so sure Eddie and fish eyes could gel together though!!!

Ah well, best laid plans and all that...

Really hope Enzo calls it a day now; he's nothing to prove and, sadly for him, not much more to give either.

Just watched the Lomachencko-Martinez fight. Loma's movement is just so sharp, I think he must be part house-fly...there something almost non-human about it.

Saw one of his fights about a year ago and recall at the time being really impressed with his movement and restraint, wasted very little energy even with a pinned and hurt opponent he was methodical. He quickly moved himself into position before letting a bunch of hard, accurate shots go and starting again, real top drawer stuff.

amateur record of 396-1.

the one loss was avenged more than once.

2 x olympic gold medal winner

2 x world amateur gold

1 x world amateur silver

1 x european amateur gold.

2 x world titles in 2 weight divisions in just 7 pro fights.

the man is a fking machine.one of the most sublime boxers i've ever seen....the greatest amateur of all time??

demetrius andrade looked fking ace as well wrecking willie nelson.

the provodnikov/molina fight was great ....molina on points was the right decision. provodnikov looked really flat.

He's certainly very impressive, one of those guys who looks like they could punch around corners and can extend their arms at will to get to the body from distance. There is a lot of very good fighters at that weight now though, not least our own Lee Selby, I'd love to see him attract some of these big world name fighters to come to Cardiff.

Of course he still disputes that 1 loss!

Probably the best performance I've seen from him. That footwork and defensive skill! And it seems he's now getting some real power to match - it's not as if Martinez falls over or stays down easily.

Best amateur ever and on the way to being one of the very best pros ever at this rate. Yet only got c. $800,000. Madness.
