any way........

don't forget ( i know how antsy you ladies get!) that alexander povetkin faces mariusz wach on WEDNESDAY 4TH NOVEMBER at 1pm on boxnation. set your sky boxes gentlemen because i think the way povetkin has been looking lately this will be an interesting fight on 2 levels....

1) the winner gets a crack at wilder

2) we get to see this version 2.0 of povetkin versus a guy who took a fking hiding off wlad but stayed upright. yeah, he subsequently tested positive but if sasha blows him away early it further livens up the interest to see povetkin/klitschko 2
Two questions:

a) Is this happening in Milton Keynes?
b) Does this present us with an opportunity to ask Carl Froch about his weight?

Unless the answer to both of the above is 'yes', your post falls firmly into the category of 'closing the stable door after the horse has bolted'!

Here's my view

here's my tuppence worth......

andy lee stops saunders after a close fight middle rounds- agree

klitschko stops fury inside 6 rounds after a cautious start- I see this going to points after a hugging contest

canelo pulls away later in the fight to outpoint cotto who looks like he's been in a car crash by the end of 12 rounds- I think Canelo will stop Cotto

degale wide ud over bute. i think the froch loss MIGHT be a bit of an anomoly for bute (unless he's been "laceyed"....which is a distinct possibility...then he gets stopped second half) - DeGale will will by KO in rounds 6-9

murray has too much of everything for abraham......wide ud or even late stoppage at this point in arthur's career- completely agree. I rate Murray very highly, his only blemishes are being robbed and being the biggest pain in the ass to GGG.

Just seen some pretty exciting news from the WBA. Due to lack of activity, they have changed the status of Guillermo Rigondeaux to Champion in Recess. Leave aside that's now the sixth category of world champion they have (to go alongside Super, Undisputed, Unified, Regular and Interim), what it means is that Scott Quigg has become their main champion at Super Bantamweight, hence the IBF will now recognise a fight with Carl Frampton as a unification fight! This apparently was an important stumbling block in the negotiations between Matchroom and the McGuigans.

Not only that, the WBA has stipulated the holder of their title needs to fight Rigondeaux by 1st May next year! As such, the possibility of not one, but two, massive fights has just taken a big step forward!!!

Andre Ward has signed with HBO and will make his light-heavyweight debut on the Cotto v Canelo undercard. A fight against Kovalev is in the making..

Another absolute mega fight in the making there.the higher skill level undoubtedly lies with ward....but is he big enough to take Kovalev's power up at light heavy?

Had a bit of time today for a change so I've been reading "50 years a fighter" ....a dictated autobiography of jem mace. There's a couple of books about mace which I have read. His story is of particular interest to me because he was the last of the old guard who imparted his knowledge on the "new" breed of fighters in people like Peter Jackson, young Griffo and the new America pugilists in people like corbett. The fact that he spent a large part of his life in Liverpool and is buried in a field cemetery adds to the story for me.

Any way....reading first hand about the training methods those bare knuckle guys went through is crazy.mace refers to these new modern "soft" fighters( the book was written in 1906) as lacking in hardened discipline!

He then goes on to describe 3 month training camps that involve being tied to the back of a cart and horse and being forced to run until collapse.every day! Apparently mace routinely ran 20 miles a day by end of camp for some of his fights.

No wonder some of these contests lasted hours.phenomenal.

I would recommend the book to any other like minded nerds like me

i remember when that book came out i was really excited because i'd already read "master of the ring" which was a superb biography of mace. given that the book you reference above was actually written by his great grandson i was eager to read it. unfortunately it didn't live up to expectation but was ok.

the mersey boxers website throws up some interesting stuff......if you look down the page that links you to mace ( i don't know where they got mace's ring record from but it's way out!!!) you'll see another legend called don volante.
there's a story about volante that he was to marry a girl who decided to become a nun instead. he never married for the rest of his life after the heartbreak. it's a true story as the nun in question is related to my wife!

With all that memorabilia collecting, attending secret signing events and other boxing related stuff, I genuinely can't see how you fit a job into your life (unless your job is a memorabilia dealer and covert event attender).

for an anonymous internet interaction you seem to know me too well stu!!

i must admit it was quite something in hamburg last year to be dashing all over the city to get to the weigh in just in time to see him show up to climb on the scales....

i distinctly remember thinking at the time ....." do you know what?, i'd take a knotted rope to my ball bag right now to shake that man's hand"

YES!!!!

I cannot wait for this one. Can't believe they agreed to do it in Manchester though, I thought it would be a neutral ground.
