Not surprising really.

Farrell also needs to go, closely followed by Rob Andrew (though I can't see him falling on his sword).

Bugger, beaten to it by three minutes, but good news I think, though very very dependent on who they replace him with.
I really hope (but sadly do not expect) that the RFU does not see this as the panacea to all that was wrong with England's World Cup performance, but carries on with its review. That said, my understanding of the review is that it will not to the committee rooms and offices, just the dressing room and coaching staff so some of the deeper issues will remain.

I've never known Andrew to do the decent thing and so the madness will continue

Why would Andrew go? Everyone always bangs on about this but his role is the following:

"RFU’s Elite Rugby Director, playing a major part in the RFU’s development and, in particular, a key role in reaching an eight year agreement between the RFU and Premier Rugby Ltd, which ensured closer communication between the two parties and the England Senior EPS squad having more time training and preparing prior to major matches throughout the season."

Essentially all he does is deal with the Prem clubs. I don't see why he should go.

Farrell et al need to go. I'm sad for Lancaster as he is a really genuine bloke but he never instilled any mentality or game plan into his team IMO. And the team themselves are a complete mess, with all these leaks, Mike Brown mouthing off etc.

I was under the impression Andrew was the guy selecting the coaches. The line of coaches who have largely failed.

It said this at the bottom of the statement?

"The new head coach will continue to report into the CEO, who will now lead the process for recruitment, beginning immediately."

Does this mean Rob Andrew is the CEO?

This ^^^ Lancaster does seem to be a thoroughly decent chap but (like Andy Robinson) promoted above his capabilities. My biggest fear is that Farrell Sr is given a shot....

I suspect that a left-field solution could well be to start introducing central contracts (the RFU would have to get this properly funded and maybe take England squad members away from any salary caps which could sweeten the pill for clubs) - though obviously this would need something that neither the RFU nor the clubs seem to have... vision.

I agree with every word of that. First time that's ever happened with The Guardian.

I don't want to de-rail this but I always LOATHED Andy Robinson and his tenure. What was very interesting though was that I met a load of internationals (not England) who actually said that he was the best coach they'd worked with/ played for and just had a very different style and was more into the psychology and personal chats and needed time with players. That is something that perhaps works at club level but not at international level when the team doesn't spend a lot of time with the coach (as they're on club duty).

Had our system been set up differently then he might have done well, by all accounts.

But, yes, I am please SL has gone and AF needs to go as well... Rob Andrew can also FRO.

Eddie Jones 6/1 - 2nd favourite.

Just watched the press conference with Ritchie:

Lancaster is leaving the RFU altogether
Farrell, Catt, Rowntree stay contracted for now
'Want the best coach possible' - Dodged question on getting English coach
Believes his position is still tenable.

Eddie Jones 6/1 2nd favourite to get the job.

Should be a clean sweep of the coaching staff. All had their failures and nothing will change.

+1

They all failed, even if SL was (supposed to be) the chief.

you see I also believe that that is a waste bomber did a lot of good stuff (which should be kept!) and I believe that he would have a great deal to offer within the RFU... Farrell and to lesser degrees Catt & Rowntree can FRO. Richie is in an unenviable position and on balance (despite handing bomber and co a stupidly long contract, I hope there was a get out clause!!) should stay. Deadweight teflon Andrew go, for the love of all that is good about English rugby GO GO GO GO GO GO

I've read Gatland being touted this morning he's a very good coach but can't see it.

I'd rather not see Jake White get the job, he hasn't done much since the 2007 World Cup win with the bocks. Had some success with the Brumbies, his coaching style might suit the traditional English stregths and please those who don't mind a snooze fest.

If it's going to be a coach from over seas I'd like to see Graham Henry, or Eddie Jones but I can't see it being either of them.

Whoever they get they need to get the coaching staff right, Steve Borthwick and Shaun Edwards and a general skills and backs coach.

Can't see Gatland coming without an absolutely massive payoff to the WRU. Edwards though is out of contract, and I think he's shown interest in England in the past. He's not a #1 though.

I agree - the fact is though that he does make some excellent points. That being said though if it were a choice between him and teflon rob I'd be looking for SCW every day of the week
