I suspect they have a tee time reserved a 2pm at a local golf course to play like this.

SA were woeful in the previous tests but they've certainly bucked up in this one. Sadly too little, too late.

What's the betting been on a Saffer win? Sadly stuff like this makes one wonder at times.

Enough of the platitudes from Cook.

He ought to be laying into his players, reading them the riot act.

Everything wrong with his captaincy is summed up in his reaction to this morning's play.

Unprofessional and incompetent.

We don't really have an alternative to make captain.

Indeed. Today he rolled out the usual we will learn speech but it's clear they bloody well don't.

I wonder if Broad might have matured into a possible now. Certainly seems less wild than a few years ago.

But yes I basically agree - not too many alternatives. I still fancy Morgan for a better run in the test side,

Compton to open with Cook, Morgan at three ?

I thought Ballance was brought back in for the number 3 spot? Is Morgan a number 3 batsman?

Hales looks like he may not make it but I suspect if he has a good 1 Day series they will stick with him.

I thought Hales would be able to make the step up but he's done nothing to show it so far. Compton has failed again, I was surprised they brought him back but perhaps it was because he was familiar with the grounds. I can't see him being chosen again. I hope they don't turn to Morgan - he's merely a smash it wildly until he gets out man. Sometimes he's lucky, sometimes he isn't, but he's not got anything like the technique to make it at Test level. Looks like there are still two vacancies to be filled, at 2 & 3. Once they've been filled successfully, I reckon England will be a pretty good team. Whether that means they will make the effort when a series is already won though, is another matter.

We do need a 2 and 3. I too am not convenced Morgan really has it to make it in tests even at six, but it would give us an option on Captaincy if he did get back.

Worth sticking with Compton in my opinion, worth another go anyway.

Hales - well he isn't an opener thats for sure. But if they re juggle the order he could bat 6 maybe. No one wants to muck Root about but sooner or later he is going to play 3.

Boycott in full flow.

I must be getting older, but I'm afraid I agree with most of it....

I would stick with them for the SL series you could drop them but there is nobody better to bring in. Since Strauss retirement we have tried just about every English qualified opener none really look as good as cook. The only player who could come back is Ballance at 3 and move Compton to open.

Exactly, plus in typical Boycott style he gets his mum's sweeping brush into the action.

Well you say that but there's a disappointing lack of rhubarb cry

...am also in agreement. I like Compton and think he deserves a go at three. Hales has failed - who else is there? Move Compton up to 2? Shorty also in my view is not good enough, not sure who the next cab on the rank is.
