I have won something else on Running Heroes and have until 1200 on Friday to decide if I want it:

In summary its:
  • One registration slot into the marathon on Sunday 13th December
  • 2-3 night stay in Tunisia
  • Flights to and from Tunisia (London Airport Only)
Other than the above, I have no further details at the moment. I can do the distance so thats not the issue. The issue is that Tunisia is on the 'essential travel only' list - https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/tunisia

Would you take it or pass?

Hmmm. Tough question. Will it impact your training for anything you've got lined up in the new year?

I had a particularly unpleasant run last night. Was meant to be 11 miles from the office with 7 of them at marathon pace. Too warm and too windy, though I stubbornly stuck to pace resulting in a bit of a meltdown after the 2 mile warm-up and 5 miles at pace. Was still 3 miles from home, so had to jog back feeling like I was going to throw up once I walked through the door. Still don't feel quite right almost 24 hours later...

Have a half marathon in November but no other events apart from that. I can do the distance and it does seem to be a good prize, its the location is the sticking point - although you can still get package holidays there so it cant be that blacklisted?

I have won a few prizes from them - t-shirt, hydration pack, socks, entry to Swiss marathon (declined that) - and the prize above.

They are quick to reply to emails and Twitter so have yet to find a catch.

I emailed the Sfax marathon organisers to get details of the prize and it's a return flight (fly out Friday or Saturday, return Monday) a car to/from the airport and 2 or 3 nights (depending on the flights you pick) in the golden tulip hotel in Sfax. They need my details and it will be booked.

I must admit, I am tempted. The security risk of the place is the only thing that's making me hesitate.

I've been to 44 countries and this was the one I liked the least (being accosted, people physically trying to drag me and my wife into shops as well as the general attitude) It's also on and 'essential travel only' which should give you an indication smile

Yes. The essential travel only part is the key and this isn't essential. The flights aren't great either - out via LHR, back via LGW - and only the flag carrier goes there direct which should be taken as another sign.

Plus the course is two laps which is dull wink

A few of us from parkrun decided to set up a mile event in the park, inspired by when Marathon Talk organised the Magic Mile. Last night was the first go then another in September.

About 15 people came, most said they'd never done a flat out mile - it's not done very often, easy to do 5, 10k, half or full but not many 1 miles.

Slight cheat on the course as it's net downhill to avoid dead turns and not go up the hill twice but course record set at 5:01, I did 6:22 (age 59, nearly 72%) quite pleased with that, am wondering if I can get sub 6, but it's a big amount to take off without lots of training!

Plan for next year is do it every month.

Thats good! The best mile recorded on my garmin is a measly 7mins 3secs although I have never tried to do a mile on its own I don't think. I am pretty sure I would be somewhere in the 6's though. You definitely havea sub 6 in you! Report back!

It's different when you are only doing a single mile though, I warmed up, nailed the mile, cooled down, there's no way I could have gone further!

I do about 7.25 over 5k so you'd probably be close to 6 if you just did one.

Not convinced I can get sub 6 but will give it a go! I'll report back.

I have been doing mile repeats every few months as part of the plan I follow. The times have come down from:

3 x 1M (6:26, 6:24, 6:20)
5 x 1M (6:21, 6:22, 6:20, 6:24, 6:19)
4 x 1M (6:05, 6:11, 6:09, 6:20)
3 x 1M (6:10.0, 5:59.3, 6:01.2)
3 x 1M (6:00.0, 5:58.6, 5:50.6)
3 x 1M (5:56.3, 5:57.4, 5:52.0)

If you keep at it then you will get the times down smile

Anyone here give blood and run regularly? I gave blood for the first time last night, felt fine at the time but quite lethargic today. I'm only running 5k at the moment but presumably I can expect a dip in performance for a while?

I have a friend that donates blood regularly and runs, with his performance often nose-diving for a week or so immediately afterwards.

The effect on performance will be quite similar to running in warm and humid conditions, where the body diverts more blood to the surface of the skin in a bid to try and cool you down, which means less blood and, ultimately, oxygen for running.

Well I said no to running heroes and they are going to pick another person out the hat. Aside from my concerns about the security, the flights were out of LHR/back via LGW and I found the route was two laps of out and back.

It'll take a day or so to replace the volume of blood taken, but it'll take a few weeks to get your red blood cells back up to your regular amount. An alternative is platelet donation, which is just as important, takes longer (90mins vs 10mins for regular blood) but you get all your blood back (minus the platelets and about 80ml reserve for testing) so you don't get any after-effects.

Ran Atlanta's finest 5k on Saturday which is basically just where the Atlanta Track club honour the police and fire services who all turn out. It was a relatively cool morning at just 24C but wildly humid and even my gentle warm up made me sweat a lot. The course which was supposed to be flat and fast was for the first 2 miles, but they forgot to mention the dirty big hill in the last mile.
Had a good run and finished 19th overall and 3rd in my age group so won a patch with that on (no medals) although the t-shirt was really quite good which we all got. Was within 16 seconds of my all time best 5k despite being in the "masters" category now so pretty pleased overall.
The organization was incredible and I really do mean incredible. Parking was easy, number pick up great, free water and a goodie box at the end, great marshalling of the course, roads closed etc etc. I'd recommend any big US race if you've ever over here on holiday as they know how to make it run really well

I've picked up a heel injury after running in wet shoes, not sure if its one of those things, or it was because the shoes were wet.

Ive rested for four weeks, but still got sore heels/ankles when I went out last night for a gentle 4miler. Possibly damaged the shoes? Time for a new pair?
Chaps below I have indicated where i'm getting pain (more the day after, and sore to touch most of the time). Its not underneath the heal, just a bit further up and towards the right (its my left ankle).



Any ideas what it could be?

IME (and I should stress I'm no expert on physiology. Just me when I've had various aches) muscle pain is normally a result of another muscle being weaker. So when I had runners knee on my left knee a good few years back. It was because my left outer quad muscle (cant remember what it was called)was weak so it was "pulling" my knee cap (slightly) out of line . Does that make sense?

So although the pain was in the knee itself, once I'd strengthened that quad up specifically for a week or 2 (found a vid on YouTube) the pain went away. And because that muscle is now working a bit better I gather it's less likely to happen again (fwiw anyway)

I don't know why the pain is there, but apart from the excellent information above, it might be a spur which is a small growth of bone and can occur on the heal. It's unlikely, but an x-ray would let you know the answer. (They ruled it out for me when I had Friebergs disease in my foot)
