Does anyone suffer with post-long race illness? I've completed two long races since I started running a year ago, a 13 mile hilly trail race and a half marathon, both times within days I've got a properly nasty cough and cold. This latest one came right off the back of fully recovering from another cold several weeks ago.

In fact generally since I started running I've had more coughs and colds than I can ever remember, probably 6 or 7 in the past 12 months (I used to get 1 or 2). I had a general check up recently and all is well, and I give blood and nothing has flagged up from that.

I'm not pushing myself particularly hard either, it's been a very gradual build up to long distances and I'm not doing any demanding speed/interval work.

Why do these people get so hung up on having a medal? I have a few chucked in the back of the garage, surely its the time (whatever it may be) and the feat of finishing thats important?

Do they display them or wear them to the pub or something?

Its just a nice thing to have. Would rather have one than yet another t-shirt.

It could be a sign that you are giving it everything in the race as when you do that, you leave your body open to infection. After a couple of marathon's I've been ill and it did not help that I forgot to eat decently after the race and did not sleep much.

In general, I find the balance between being running fit and being healthy is a fine line and so I have to up my fruit/veg intake the more I run and get more sleep the more I run

To be honest I would have been more annoyed at the lack of the goodie bag, about a tenners worth of useful post race food and drink in it!

Because deep down I'm an old hippy I donate mine via the Medals4Mettle charity.

"Runners from around the world give their hard earned medals to Medals4Mettle. Our worldwide network of physicians and volunteers then awards these medals attached to a Medals4Mettle ribbon to children and adults fighting debilitating illnesses who might not be able to run a race, but are in a race of their own just to continue to live their life. It is in honor of this mettle and courage in bravely facing these challenges that they are awarded a medal."

I'm keeping a certain set that they're never having though, and they're in a box.

Hard workouts and races at full tilt suppress your immune system for a few hours to a few days. When elbow deep in training, I've had the odd week where I feel like I'm coming down with something and have had to bring a recovery week forward to compensate.

Not always possible, but try and avoid ill people immediately after a hard workout or race.

As Jiffle says, adding more sleep is good remedy to avoiding infection.

Just signed up for the Melbourne Marathon. Its at the end of October so a nice achievable goal I believe. I've let my constant running slip so I needed a big goal to motivate myself.

Since iv up my distance my right foot on the inside edge has been rubbing in my shoe. Im not sure if this is down to the shoes or socks.

So first off will try new socks. as mine are getting a bit thin. Any recommendations for a good pair of running socks for long-distance ?

I swear by these.
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/balega-enduro-quarter-sock...

Been running 5 years, and never ever had feet issues using them in that time. I've had 5 pairs in that time and only replaced them as I thought I should, they've not worn in any place at all.
For reference I run around 1,400 miles per year.

Brentwood Half this morning, 1:25:17. Very windy and about knocked 6 minutes off my previous PB, so pleased with that. Need to do some more long distance runs in training to improve.

For years I've always run in just thick-ish wool socks (Bridgedale Trekker in my case) but I've never seen anyone else wear them; I like a padded feel rather than a thin sock and found it took out some of the small movements out and seemed to merge foot and shoe together better - if that makes sense?

A lot of people swear by the Ininji toe socks, but I can't get on with them myself but they have a great reputation. 1000 Mile are also mentioned a lot.

A change in sock, (and strapping, lube-ing, wetness, lacing system, swelling after distance), can alter fit, size, cushioning and friction so be prepared to experiment - like a load of these sorts of questions, the best answer is the one you find yourself [without sounding like a smart arse I hope!!].

The Mudsocs? Me too, I've got about 4 pairs and they're my standard. Don't mind getting wet feet so much with them on.

Did my first ever half marathon at Reading today and my TomTom records the distance as 13.21 miles. Strava has changed the distance to 13.0 miles and not recorded the race as a half marathon in terms of PB. Very very irritating given everyone else who has been matched to my run has a distance of 13.1 or higher recorded!

Yeah that's the ones.

I also got a pair of goretex roclites and there weird to run in , you jump in puddles ( because that's what every 44 year old man does ) and the fabric repels the water it just sheets off.

Even if you change the activity to Race as opposed to run?
You can manually add PB's under your profile also.
