That's a lot of energy, but it can be difficult to gauge. 1 pound of fat is 3,500kcals. Parkrun today, I burned around 600-700 kcals.
Leg pain? Sounds more like doing too much. I've learned that I need sufficient recovery when I run, with the stress on the joints, ankles, and my hams. I cut out all other exercises that affect my lower body pretty much.
Yeah. My Garmin is showing for an 18km run I am burning 2200. Even if that's over estimating by 20% it is still a lot.Leg pain? Sounds more like doing too much. I don't think I am doing too much. ts either fueling or I don't have the endurance to maintain that speed.
The first half of the HM is up hill so I am going to focus on keeping my pace slow and then speed up when I get to the flat.

Afternoon all, have any of you Ran the Brighton Marathon? I registered for it on Friday...So unless I do one before it comes around it'll be my first.
A large contingent from my running club to Brighton every year and think its great - good organisation, fast course if there is no wind, plenty of support on the way round, etc. The downside is that you have to get your race number the day before so if you are not local it may involve two trips, overnight stay or similar.KTF said:

I have my longest event so far this coming weekend, A 5 mile trail race (on the side of a hill) then a 10k road race at end of May.
Loving it

London was fab, glad I had a chance to do it, but I found the busyness of it all rather stressful if truth be told. Difficult to keep a proper pace with so many people to potentially trip over etc.
We were watching near mile 18 (after marshalling at the Good for Age start) and even after that distance it was quite crowded from about 3 hour pace till after 4:30 pace so it must be difficult to run your own speed if you get in the wrong place.944fan said:

I think you are already over fueling. 4 gels for a 12m run ? Plus a Lucozade sport and a carb heavy breakfast. My reckoning is that is close to 600 calories in that lot. Most Gels are around 100 calories. I don't think I am doing too much. ts either fueling or I don't have the endurance to maintain that speed.

Porridge (with water) is 50 calories per 100g - so weigh it out.
Lucozade around 50 Calories.
To me that seems a lot, I will typically run anything up to about 8 miles on empty (water only) admittedly I am only 80 kgs, but even so.
Think you leg strength sessions are also an issue. Try a week of just stretching and short dynamic (weight free) exercise. Eg weight free squats, lunges, hip rotations etc - about 2 sets of 5 or 6 maximum.
Then long stretches, hip flexor always hard to really stretch, lots of hip/trunk rotations.
Distance/speed you are going long, but at a slow pace. Mix it up. try a four mile run at 9mm or even 8:30 mm if you can hold it. It should help you build strength in those muscles without taking them too far to soon.
What is the deal with your weight are you a gym hound with a lot of muscle on, or are you a big lad looking to lose some tub ? If the latter, then diet is quicker and easier than long runs, especially if you need to pack the suger away to get round.

The expenditure sounds accurate, I meant the intake before the run; porridge, lucozade sport and two gels. Save a gel for halfway? It has caffeine?I don't think I am doing too much. ts either fueling or I don't have the endurance to maintain that speed.

Not having the endurance is what I mean by 'too much.' You're muscles are being put under a lot of pressure.
I should be out for (what I consider) a long run today, maybe up to 12km. I'll get my cal expenditure off strava.

It was good enough that I have entered for next year - will go in the ballot for London too.

Yep I'm hearing all good things about Brighton Marathon
A couple of questions.
I have a pair of Nike Air Zoom Structures as have flat feet. I had a gait test and this confined i needed supportive shoes. Issue i have with the nikes is they are quite heavy. Also where the arch is it rubs or pinches my foot so I tend to get a blister there.
Would it be worth having another gait test and then trying to find some lighter shoes ?
Also I damaged a tendon in my foot so its not strong enough to run yet. What would the best way to gently get back in to running without damaging it more ?

I done it in 4.51, not what I wanted, however ran with a fellow charity runner who was really struggling and kept him going, so lost about 20 mins or so. Either way, I am happy with only 4 months training.
Was very very busy this year and was difficult to find a suitable pace without running into other, plus avoiding bottles and energy gels.
Support is mind blowing, so amazing. Its a hugely emotional event.

My friend was running the marathon this year in aid of help for heroes, sadly he didn't make it to the end.
If anyone has a spare bit of cash a donation would be greatly appreciated.

At halfway everything was going so well, no pains, no thirst, right temp, then i came unstuck at mile 16. instead of the 4:10ish i was hoping for i got in at 4:39. My legs were like jelly at the end and my mind had totally gone. I can remember the Cutty Sark and Tower Bridge but thats about it. I think i went too quickly trying to push for that sub-4, i ran Reading HM 3 weeks ago digging out a PB and seemed to think i could just repeat the strategy.
A great experience though, people you don't even know shouting your name for 26 miles.
I raised a few quid for Crohns and Colitis UK too which my company will double. The wife donated to David Seath as well.

That is why they have the timing mats at regular intervals to spot people who take a 'short cut' along the way.http://results-2016.virginmoneylondonmarathon.com/...

Why bother entering if you are not going to do the distance. Her 20k time was 02:17:30 so she didnt think that might be a bit suspicious?

Population 65m - London Marathon Finishers 1 million in 35 years. You have already over achieved. I know people get hung up on times and what they could have run. But the last few miles of London are brutal, I trained only on off road, on trails, as that is where I live. I totally underestimated the tarmac pounding I would get in London. It really hurt. A great experience though, people you don't even know shouting your name for 26 miles.

Great result and a respectable time, I know some blokes can do it in 2:03 but 4:39 for anyone over 26 miles is a great effort, you should be proud.
