AGM last night - I am now vice captain! Should be an interesting year!
Best wishes for a successful year, even more so for next.

My old man skippered our place a few years back and, with all the events, away matches, committee meetings, etc, we hardly saw him for 12 months !
Sssshhh...... don't tell the wife!!! hehe

Cheers!

Yep, tee times already booked for both days!! The way I look at it, if you can get it round in a halfway decent score in these conditions, when the summer comes it'll be easy!!
Ha! How long have you been playing? You must be new if you're still so optimistic wink
Not really, first started in the mid 90's, joined my first club in 2004ish then my current club in 2007 and been playing most weekends since! It's just putting a positive spin on the benefits of getting out there when the conditions aren't great and you're getting cold and wet!! And also to counter some of the moaners at our place about the greens not being as good as they should be etc, every club has a few. I guess optimism exceeding ability is the core of my game!!!

Fair enough! I like the optimism. I'll try to remember it when we're being blown to pieces on Sunday!

Anyone see Rory make birdie after taking a drop on the par 5 today? Just a casual 6 iron (I think) from 198 yards to 12ft. Unreal. Really hope he gets another major this year, prefer him massively to Speith, even if he is a United fan!

Yep just seen it! Looked like his drive bounced sideways to finish in the lake, no worries though, just drop one, smash it to within a few feet, sink the putt and move on!! Glad he's fit again and looking forward to hopefully some great shootouts in the majors this year, only a couple of months til the Masters!!

Looking really good there Rosscow! Let us know how they play! Might end up switching to GP after all if they're a big improvement! Although if i get new grips, i'll surely need new clubs....can't stop looking at these at the moment...hmmm.

Wonder how much trouble I'd be in with SWMBO for treating myself to them...

No golf for me this weekend, GF's scirocco is getting an MOT tomorrow morning, followed by the Overclokers Motors forum SE meet tomorrow lunchtime with the rugby & a Trampolene gig in Brixton after, then the BMW SS on sunday morning....

Always next week I guess! - if the course is open that is - I don't fancy the 50mph winds predicted tomorrow in any event!

I'll keep you posted!

Those MB's look lovely - but I do wonder if they'd be the right club for you at the moment? Not even all Titleist tour players use the MB's, most use the AP2.

Can't help but think they'll be very unforgiving on off centre strikes. Or maybe go for the CB's?

In other news, I'm quite interested in the Ping Crossover 4 iron....

I can vouch for the CB's Kentlad, bought a set of 714's a year or so ago and love them. Plus there's some bargains around now the 716's are out, I've seen 4-PW sets for £400.

And with regard to SWMBO, remember what they say, it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission!!!

I think I'm slightly in love with them, have always loved the MB's. Striking wise, I don't feel like I'm 'that' far off being able to use them, in fairness i should be off single figures, I just don't practice enough. Surely new shiny clubs will encourage me to practice more? biggrin
I think I need to go and give them a whack to see if the consistency is there. The CB's are still lovely looking clubs too & would probably look at those for say 6,5,4,3 irons!

I always think - if Tour professionals aren't using them, why should any club golfers?!

Spieth has AP2's from 4-PW, with a 712U 3 iron.

My thought process is "why make hitting the ball harder, just so I can use a club that looks nicer?" hehe

I can see where you're coming from, but I honestly see no reason other than aesthetics as to why anyone at club level should play a full set of MB's.

Wedges and short irons, maybe.

I know what you mean & I'm a massive tart which is part of the reason for wanting them! But then, I'm also of the thought process of...if they are hard to hit, then I'll have to improve me/my swing to use them. That's what I did with my current set. I tried some blades (mizuno/taylormade etc.) & decided I was a long way from using those so settled on the FG Tour irons from Wilsons which are somewhere in-between game improvements and 'player' irons they're forged a feel great... It's taken me 3/4 years since buying them but I've gone from a 23 handicap to a 12 (albeit it with 3 lessons chucked in to help along the way).

I reckon most people who play to a low teen handicap that have aspirations to play to single figures (like me and you for example) could use them without having a detrimental effect to their handicap (after a bit of practice that is).

I dare say the reason Speith is using AP2s is that it's what Titleist want him to use. But that's just me being an absolute cynic!

Mate of mine treated himself to a set of Mizuno MP-5 irons a few months ago - he still hasn't been brave enough to take them into the house in case his missus catches a glimpse and realises what he's done.

In fairness, I don't think they'd make anyone play clubs they didn't want to use.

They want him to win - and if that means he feels more confident hitting AP2's then that's what he uses. I'm sure any top pro would tell the manufacturer where to go - there are plenty of other club manufacturers that would take him on!

Last year Zach Johnson even had an AP1 in his bag when he won the Open.

hehe

I'm pretty lucky - I don't think my wife would have any idea what clubs I have (although I am keeping the new grips firmly in the bag at home at the moment!!)

The game can be difficult enough without having to fight against your clubs as well !

Best advice I can offer is get yourself to a shop with decent pro, try as many irons as you can and, when you've decided on which one's right for you, get them custom fitted. I went for the whole lot with my current set - shaft flex & length, lie angle, even grip size, and it was worth every penny.
