Snap. I picked up a pair of the green/grey on a work trip to California last week for $108.

First frosty morning of the Autumn today, lovely and bright but a bit fresh! Time for the winter gear to come out, galvins, oven gloves and hand warmers were all put to good use. 39 pts so happy days, gets me back to 9. Playing in shorts in the sun is all good, but I also enjoy winter golf and if the course is open I'll be out there. So who on here are the year-round golfers, and who's put their clubs in the garage till the spring!?

Come Hell or high water we usually play. Cant remeber the last time we played on Winter greens, only one sunday when it was a white out.

I play all year round but rain just hacks me off. Got rained on for half a round last week when the forecast said otherwise so left umbrella behind.
Very nearly lost my brand new Mizuno 9i in a lake when it flew out of my hands on an approach shot.

I was straight online when I got home looking at wet grip gloves - which I'm not quite convinced about. I had one years ago and it felt like wearing a Marigold.

Oh yes, play all year.

No winter tees or greens for us so no reason to avoid! Love a winter game of golf - as long as you have all the gear.

I have a lot of Galvin Green and SealSkinz gear. The SealSkinz waterproof socks are fantastic: https://www.sealskinz.com/UK/socks/mid-weight-mid-...

Full Gavin Green Gore-Tex waterproofs, several of their Insula tops plus their snood. Also have a waterproof SealSkinz woolly hat which is good.

When it's really cold I'll wear full thermal long johns plus I have a pair of knee high thermal Galvin Green socks, under my Galvin Green Gore-Tex trousers.

I also have one of these which I put on under my woolly hat - really keeps your ears warm! https://www.surfdome.com/the_north_face_head_bands...

Obviously mittens between shots are a must - used to have Galvin Green ones but now have Taylormade ones which are warmer (lost by GG ones).

Another good tip for when it's really cold is to wear a normal golf love on both hands. have tried the 'winter' gloves but couldn't get on with them.

Talking of winter golf I bought a pair of the Footjoy golf boots from American Golf last Friday as my other two older pairs of Footjoy shoes were leaking a bit. Played on Saturday morning in wet conditions underfoot but no actual rain and they turned out to be not waterproof... Took them back to AG today and they reckoned they must be a rouge pair as very few other people have complained. They offered an instant refund/exchange - no hassle thankfully!

I instead came away with a pair of black Footjoy Contours which have good reviews and hopefully they will be waterproof. They have a few pairs of Ecco Biom G2 reduced from £195 to £135 which I would have bought but none in my size.

Help!

Playing a 5 club challenge, I've chosen four clubs - 3W, 7 iron, PW and putter, that'd actually do fine but I've got one slot left, would you go shorter (SW?) or longer (5 iron?)

Got 2 hours left before the club choices must be submitted, any thoughts?

I'd change the PW for SW and stick a 4/5 iron in the bag...have a better balanced approach to each hole IMO.

You're looking for regular gaps, so yes, given your choices I'd go 4 or 5 iron.

It's personal choice but I'd not be without my 60 degree wedge. It's my go to club for most chip shots around the green and bunker shots.

So I'd go: 3W, 7i, PW, 60, Putter

Thanks for all the quick replies, can't change PW for SW, for me most of the par 4s are 3W then PW into the green and I've got a huge gap in distance between my PW and SW (135 PW, 100 SW)

The 60 degree is an option but used as a bit more of a 'get me out of this mess' club, I'm very comfy with a PW for short chips otherwise

If I don't get in the s**t I can go without a really lofted club but this is golf and, well, you know, s**t happens......smile

For this course and its yardages I need that 7i Jim and I'm leaning towards a 60 degree, if I get in the deeper rough near a green and try to punch out with a PW it could end up in the next county

Thanks to everyone for the input, I'll report back

Went with 3W/7i/PW/SW, shot two 43's for an 86 and 34 points, came 2nd

Club choice was perfect, loved the simplicity of only having 5 and the manipulation of often using a 'slightly wrong' club.
More enjoyable than using a full set

Thanks to all for your speedy input.

Nice work. It's illuminating how a 5-club or even a 3-club competition demonstrates how little benefit you actually get from having all 14 available.

And it's a handy exercise in conjuring 'weird' shots from the 'wrong' tools.

My new dog walking toy for the dark winter nights.

Replacing all the balls I lost over the summer. smile

Most balls glow bright blue-white but strangely ProV1s are much less reflective, almost as though they're made to be lost.
