The Golf Thread - 2016!
Discussion
Out to Portugal next week with 17 others for a week of Golf - very excited. If I come away with a good round I'm going to be happy.
Year in review? Crap, other than dropping some cash on a new set of clubs which have barely been outside. Underestimated how busy I'd be and how little chance I'd actually get to play! Hopefully a change of plans with some play time through sensible Winter days before making a better year of it next year.

Nice work. It's illuminating how a 5-club or even a 3-club competition demonstrates how little benefit you actually get from having all 14 available.
And it's a handy exercise in conjuring 'weird' shots from the 'wrong' tools.
Agreed - fun too. And it's a handy exercise in conjuring 'weird' shots from the 'wrong' tools.
I'm playing in a "2 clubs and a putter" comp on Boxing Day actually, which I suspect will illustrate why it's normal to have at least a couple more clubs in your bag
Will be very entertaining from a shot-making perspective. Especially as I've played twice in the last 12 months.

Whilst you obviously lose on having the perfect yardage, by the 5th or 6th you're an absolute bandit with whatever club you've got, and quickly get a good shot grooved.
Top tip - if there's a big carry somewhere on the course, make sure you remember and cater for it before teeing off...
Ask me how I learned that one...

7 iron and a wedge, job done!I'm playing in a "2 clubs and a putter" comp on Boxing Day actually, which I suspect will illustrate why it's normal to have at least a couple more clubs in your bag

I bet you'll only be half a dozen shot behind your normal self.

Thanks - that's probably true. It'll be interesting.Whilst you obviously lose on having the perfect yardage, by the 5th or 6th you're an absolute bandit with whatever club you've got, and quickly get a good shot grooved.

@ the big carry. There is one, it's c.175 yards, so 7 iron not an option. I'll probably be going with something like a 19 degree rescue and an 8 iron. It's likely to be winter greens (course is in Cheshire) so minimal bunkers in play.

With a bit of practice, a putter stroke with a rescue is a great chipping tool. Virtually duff proof.@ the big carry. There is one, it's c.175 yards, so 7 iron not an option. On a separate note, fancied a wee change so picked up a Titleist 913 10.5 degree Driver head (and a matching 3 wood). Looking at shafts, saw a Touch Tour TT but never heard of them. A quick google doesn't reveal much either. Ok or avoid?
Years ago, I had a Grafalloy Blue on a club and loved it - so tempted to look out for one again. Equally I currently have a 909 9.5 degree with Aldi,a Voodoo and hit it great.j

Nobody's posted since Tuesday so thought I'd give it a bump! Winter pairs today, organised a couple of weeks ago so the weather was pot luck...... and it tipped it down all day!! You know it's a bad day when you turn up at the club and you're the only car in the car park!! Managed to get a result so all good. Could have been worse, group behind had to play 22 holes to sort it out!
Have been over in the States for the past week with work (and the wonderful sideshow of them electing someone Orange to the White House), so sadly the golf clubs have been in the locker for a while - am fishing them out this afternoon for a range session, as have my next lesson tomorrow so need to figure out this new backswing we're working on.

Can't comment on that shaft you've found, but I was also a big fan of the Grafalloy Blue (had one in my Nike SQ Tour), most similar shaft I've found recently is the Diamana I've had put in my covert. It's equally low torque, so you can lean on it without the power hooks and slices I was getting with the Kuro Kage. Sorry, just got to tell someone and my wife is not at all interested!
I know that this is not at the level of most people on here but I'm a 28 handicap third year golfer and had a number 42 moment in my first lesson lesson for a year last week, (The key to Life, the Universe and Everything), my pro spotted that amongst several other things my down swing was being initiated by my right arm and not my left and was causing all sorts of problems which I do not even begin to understand.
The moment he said this though it was like a revelation to me and I am now trying to start the downswing from my left shoulder, I'm now (mostly) hitting the ball straighter and further and it all feels so much better, I played yesterday in chilly and windy conditions and scored a best ever 39 points with only one blob and beat two mates who are better than me, so chuffed!
I know it can all go badly wrong again but I definitely feel like I'm getting somewhere and am now looking forward to playing more golf through the winter.

I don't want to burst your bubble - golf is like that. As soon as you think you've worked out what was going wrong, the next time you play that key 'thing' won't work at all!I know that this is not at the level of most people on here but I'm a 28 handicap third year golfer and had a number 42 moment in my first lesson lesson for a year last week, (The key to Life, the Universe and Everything), my pro spotted that amongst several other things my down swing was being initiated by my right arm and not my left and was causing all sorts of problems which I do not even begin to understand.

Tiger back in action again this week (well hopefully, they don't tee it up proper until Thursday) at the Hero World Golf Challenge. Anyone else keen to see how his return unfolds?
I first got into golf around 2006 and at the time I actually wasn't too keen on Tiger as he was almost too good. It's probably a bit of a selective memory (although his stats certainly back it up to a degree) but I remember being annoyed if he was on the first page of the leaderboard going into Sunday because it felt like everyone else was just playing for 2nd place.
Now though I really want him to come back, play well and win again. At worst he's probably the 2nd best golfer ever but even if he can get back to 85% of his previous best, I don't think a few more wins and maybe a major or two would be beyond him.

Very similar to my views! Really wish him all the best, hope his back holds up.I first got into golf around 2006 and at the time I actually wasn't too keen on Tiger as he was almost too good. Bridgestone will be hoping for a Tiger win, he is using a 330s ball. Taylormade, despite their financial problems, seem to make the best woods at the moment
I think golf is now firmly 'post-tiger'. He had 5-10 years as comfortably the best, but his competition has evolved and I think the current top 3 are basically every bit as good as Tiger ever was.
Even if he got back to his best, I don't think he would be any better than the today's best. But I don't think that's possible for him. His body and his head are done. I'd wager there will be no more tournament wins at all, never mind majors.
