would it be worth a couple of lessons to get some of the basics of the swing and stance and some pointers on what to work on?
I would suggest that the first thing that you do is to go and book a set of lessons with your local pro. Go along to a few courses local to yourself and talk to people and find out who is recommended and see if you get on with them. Finding the right pro for you is the most important thing when getting lessons, then it is all about practice and more practice.

I would limit yourself to self teaching or watching internet teaching guides etc. as it is very easy to get into bad habits and build muscle memory which might help you hit 1 out of 5 balls well but ideally you want be working at a much higher ratio than that. It'll be a lot easier for the pro to sort you out as a blank canvas and build your swing from the ground up rather than tweaking what you are already doing. It'll also be easier for you to start getting used to it rather than breaking away from what you've already been doing.

Admirable that you are getting into tennis and golf at the same time. Both are time consuming sports! Best of luck with it.

Tennis isn't so bad as I used to play when I was in my teens, granted it's been a long time since I played but it's easier to get the strokes back than start from scratch. I've been at a club for the last few months and will be playing for one of the mens teams over the summer.

I'll check out a few places for lessons, it seems that most of the local ones have pro's that have their own sites to promote their coaching. I think an hour would probably be a good place to start, it seems this would be around £40, is this about the going rate? If anyone has any recommendations for the central Bedfordshire and surrounding areas I would be grateful.

Our place was playing stupidly long over the weekend.

The course was soaking in places so there was zero run on the ball, on the greens was like putting through treacle, the rough is still too wet to cut so it's really thickened up and, in the greenkeepers' wisdom, they put every white tee back as far as they could - I've never hit so many long irons or hybrids into greens, even after good drives.

Finished up with 33 points yesterday which, after plugging and losing a ball on 16 (for nil points), I was pretty pleased with.

A very disappointing 87 for me this weekend. I 3-putted 4 times. None from long distance. I was just crap with the putter. It didn't help that the 2 times I strayed near a bunker, the ball didn't go in the bunker, but hung on horrible banks, leaving me horrendous stances to play a shot. I'd have rather been in the bunker with a chance of getting up and down. Instead, it cost me double both times.

The front 9 was closed after heavy rain, and the back 9 was still very wet, so our course was playing long too. We played the back 9 twice.

It didn't really matter though. I was playing my next door neighbour for money. I gave him his full 12 shots compared to my handicap and we played medal for 50p a shot. He had a stinker and I beat him by 24 shots, so 12 shots handicap. £6 - big money.

I did find that I worried far less about my actual score because I was playing against someone, rather than the course.

Finally got a game (sort of) together this weekend. Turns out my handicap lapsed last year, although I was playing i don't think I played enough competitions...

I had a handicap of 8.4 or something and managed to card an average 79, so +10 on the course (Sundridge Park West for those that may know it). As others have said, was pretty wet, hitting putts hard and still left 4/5 of them under a foot short and bang online...would have helped my score no end!

Always next weekend I guess! - just need a few more card rounds, hell just to get it live I'd happily card a +20!

Blimey guys, sounds like your courses are struggling at the moment.

I'll just leave these here to annoy you biggrin

First tee on Saturday morning:

And the 5th green on Saturday morning:

And the 17th yesterday evening (my friend in the picture). And yes, our shoes and wheels really are that clean!
My ball is the yellow one on the green. Managed to hole that for a birdie!

Well after my 0.9 cut on thursday, I was hoping to try and get another and shift the handicap 2 shots this week.
Ended up shooting a Gross 77 nett 72. Not enough for a cut but least it wasn't 0.1 back in tough conditions.

And as this is pistonheads, who says you need an estate as a golfer.;)

Thats a trolley and a tour bag all squeezed in. Quite happy it all fits, was a little worried when the bag showed up that it wouldn't fit.

Can anybody recommend me a good pair of leather golf shoes. My faithful Nike Tiger Woods-style brogues finally gave up the ghost this year and the plastic Nikes I thought might be a decent replacement have taken a big chunk of skin off the top of my big toe. Have decided I need leather again but leather golf shoes seem ludicrously overpriced.
I was thinking I need spikes but having realised I'm a fair weather golfer maybe the spikeless ones are a better bet?

footjoy Dryjoy Contour are IMO one of the best spikeless shoes on the market. I've got two pairs and love them.
These are also very good, I've got a pair waiting for summer.http://www.skechers.co.uk/style/53530/skechers-go-golf-elite/bkw

And I would recommend the Ecco Tour Hybrid. Very expensive, but if you have an Ecco outlet nearby you might get lucky.
I got mine for £95.

Thanks for the suggestions, I've had normal Ecco shoes and they've been OK so I guess their golf ones would be too, it's just the crazy prices that I don't get! Will check out the Skechers too. Are spikeless shoes OK in the wet?

Just got 2 days at work left then it's off to Ashbury in Devon with 15 others for 4 days off golf, beer and probably some snooker. Fantastic place, think we've got 6 rounds arranged over 4 days, just over 300 quid a head.

I cannot bloody wait biggrin

Very nice, that's good value too! I've got a month until we go for ours, just re-gripped the clubs in preparation! We've got 3 different courses down in Exeter to play. Can't wait! Fingers crossed you get some good weather!

Snap! It's where they flex for some reason. Annoying as I've only used them for 2 rounds. What do they say about buying cheap though...

I've been getting back into it, more work related golf so not wanting to look like an arse. Consistently playing to about 16 but I reckon single figures is achievable if I could stop the odd ruinous tee shot. Short game and putting is coming along nicely and I treated myself to a new Taylor Made SLDR and an Odyssey White Hot putter, driver is giving me about 30 more yards and putter is a lovely weight.

I love waking up and seeing cloudless skies at the moment.

My MD is going to propose me for membership at Royal Liverpool too.
