Still haven't managed to play this year yet ! Spent plenty of evening's at the range but no course time. I work every Saturday and some Sundays with a day off in the week, everyone I know who plays golf usually play sat/sun. Is it weird to play midweek on your own ?

Nope - I'd be out there in a heartbeat today if I could! Glorious morning!

Had a good laugh yesterday, foursome competition. All pairings drawn out of the bag. Came 3rd out of 15 pairs with 33 points, had a couple of nice birdies.

Well played Rosscow! Don't get to play a great deal of foursomes, the only comp that uses it at our club is a mixed knockout that runs through the summer. It's a fun format, although for some reason always feels like you've only played half a game! Greensomes can be a good alternative, at least you get to hit a tee shot on every hole!!

My 2 new rescues arrived today so the bag upgrade is complete, just a shame that the forecast for next weekend is currently wet both days!! Oh well, hopefully that'll change between now and then.

Foursomes is a tricky format to play well in, it's hard to (like you say) be consistent when you're not hitting every shot.

It's bloody good fun though, you really get the team spirit kicking in!!

Greensomes isn't allowed at our club, we're only ever allowed to play 2 balls at one time (so either singles or foursomes).

Fantastic stuff on the Hole in One for Mrs G. I came close a while ago, pitched a ft past & spun back and hit the pin, not sure how it didn't drop! She must have been chuffed!

Out for a round on Sunday. Need some new balls, struggling to decide what to try next...any suggestions? Under £25 a dozen ideally!

I'm confused by this! With Greensomes each of the four players has a ball that they tee off with and then each pair choose the ball they want to continue with in alternate shot format. That's less balls in play than four ball better ball where each is playing their own ball. Or are you saying that when you play singles you can only play in a two ball?

Correct! We're literally only allowed to play golf 2 balls at a time.

So that's either 2 single players, or a foursome.

The only exception to this is if there is an odd number turn up for a competition, in which case a three ball will go out last.

Blimey, not come across that before!! Glad Boxsey asked cos I didn't really catch on either! Sounds a bit restrictive and on the face of it not overly sociable, but on the other hand I bet it helps the speed of play.

One of the things I like about our club is Saturday and Sunday mornings are a roll up from first light until 10am, 2 balls before 8am for those that want to get round quick, and then 4 balls. Works really well, no need to book a tee time or organise a group, just turn up and your guaranteed a game, plus it mixes things up and you get to play with a few different people. On the downside though, 4 and a half hour rounds are the norm!

It's a very traditional club! Speed of play is the most important thing - no longer than 3.5 hours per round (closer to 3 is usual).

But, all of our competitions are drawn from a bag, so you never know who you're going to play with so very sociable in that respect. Mind you, there are 5 or 6 comps a year that you can choose your playing partner.

I love it!

I think a lot of clubs could learn from this, in particular, the comps being drawn from a bag smile

Getting round that quick is a bonus without doubt, 4 hrs is quick at our place plus there's a halfway hut which adds 10-15 mins. Our comps used to be you could choose your partners but had to play in handicap bands, but they scrapped it and now anybody can play with anybody. Apart from Club champs which is different, handicap order on day 1 and score order on day 2.

Not sure if it's entirely a good thing though because people can get a bit clicky, there's one odd comp in the year that's meant to be a random draw and some people don't sign up because they don't like the uncertainty of not knowing who they'll be playing with!! Seems nuts to me, worst case and your playing partners aren't your cup of tea, it's only a round of golf!!

Thanks for the link. I've had the Bridgestones before and didn't mind them so might give the Callaways a try!

Kentlad, if you don't mind maxing the budget there's normally somebody on eBay doing srixon z-stars for £25 a box. For something a bit cheaper try Wilson dx2, I found one at our course the other weekend and whacked it round for a bit, thought it was pretty good.

Been an interesting start to the year as I got a letter from the club and as I have entered 11 qualifiers last year and only hit the buffer 3 times they put me up 1 shot to 11.8! Super pissed off, admittedly I do struggle off HC as I shot a best ever ( by 5 shots) gross 75 to get down to 9.8 but really struggle to shoot low 80's all the time. This doesn't really encourage entering comps! I should have just sat on my 9.8HC!

This has spurned me on, set of lessons booked, selling my AP2 712's ( on ebay) and bought a set of AP2 714's.

I also got a putter fitting last night, firstly with my Scotty, but then with the Edel putter. Wow what an eye opener, I was aiming right on everything, so a putter was fit to me. What a difference. It on order so I will also have a Scotty Cameron counter balance putter on ebay soon.

Hopefully this year I can make progess and hit single figures!

Thanks for the heads up! Already bought those Callaways so going to see how I get on. Managed to get a tee time booked for Sunday & have just seen the weather forecast, best pack the waterproofs!
