Where are you playing?

Yeah, the weekend looks like a bit of a wash out on both days frown

I'll probably go down in the morning and see how it looks!

A course called Darenth Valley GC. It's one of a few decent winter courses local to me, it's chalk based so drains well and only occasionally has winter tees/greens. Have only played it once before so anything above 30 points will be a good day out I'd imagine!

We're lucky to be playing in January at all so no complaints from me!

When do your grips turn up? Having a go at doing them yourself? Need to order some new ones and know the ones I want, but can't find them in stock anywhere!

Waiting to hear from my mate (the head pro at Hemsted Forest) who has ordered them for me. He's going to stick them on for me, has done me a good deal! Another local club wanted £143 to supply and fit 13 of the MCC plus 4's - I'm getting them done for a lot less than that!

What ones are you after?

Even £143 isn't a bad price for them fitted. They're about £10 each retail aren't they? I'm after a set of white and orange mutli-compounds. Just can't find them anywhere, not sure if they're even sold anymore!

Yeah, they're quite expensive (although you can get a set of 13 for around £70-£75 online).

I know you can get the standard MCC in orange and black, not sure about orange and white!

So my local course is still a bit too iffy to be playing. Me and a friend played golf indoors yesterday on a simulator, what a good bit of fun that is ! Its in my local snooker hall so a few beers and a game of golf.

Working all weekend so no golf till at least next Thursday, but have got a game at Celtic Manor soon which I'm looking forward too.

Tried to get out this year and back into things with the new irons (well to me anyway)...

but every time i've be able to its been hideously wet/on temps which isn't great fun (Sundridge Park) - tried last weekend and despite playing well - I was about level gross! it was just no fun when you're putting/chipping near what is in effect a small hole on an un-cut, lumpy fairway...

We've just given up and gone to lunch after 7/9/11 depending on which course we've played

Roll on the good weather but reckon this weekend may be another rain-off!

Sorry to barge in on this but I'm looking for some advice. I've got 6 weeks of gardening leave coming up in between a job change. Can't take hols as the family are at work/school so thought I'd invest the time into picking up a new sport. Do you think I can pick up golf in 6 weeks of intensive lessons, practice and playing?

have you ever played golf before?

I reckon if you're a complete beginner and you went to a pro for 6 weeks it would be an excellent way to ensure you get off to a good start in the sport.

Just don't expect too much from yourself - you can play this game for a lifetime and not master it!

absolutely. But warn your family they're going to see a lot less of you...it's very addictive!

Anyone reshafted their own clubs before?

I managed to break one of my hybrids a couple of weeks back, so I've ordered a couple of project X shafts and all the bits I'll need and I'm gonna reshaft both of them.

They were a bit too flexy anyway, so I guess it's cheaper then buying new clubs.

No, let us know how you get on! What grips have you gone for?

Yes, I reshafted my Maxfli pitching wedge last week. Getting the old shaft out is a doddle if you warm the hozel with a heat gun for 5 minutes the epoxy will loosen enough to slide the head off. You need to ensure you get the right replacement shaft type ( tapered or parallel) so do some research on what type your current shaft is. I got my local pro to glue the new shaft in for nowt, but easy to do yourself with some decent quality shaft epoxy.

Edit- as you have a hybrid it will be a graphite shaft so the diameter is the critical bit.

Will do.

I haven't bought the grips yet. I'll get them put on at my local pro shop. I'll probably put some multi compound golf prides on.

I also picked up my new Titliest AP1 irons today. They're custom fit and I can't wait to try them out on the course. I hit them on the range when I picked then up and they seemed great. Massively different to my old set.

I checked before I bought them and my hybrids (cobra baffler DWS) take a .335 shaft. The process looks pretty easy and I've got all the tools I could ever need at work. I'm looking forward to seeing how they come out.

When my original multi compound grips lost their, errr, grip I thought I'd try a few different types to see the differences so I bought 3 types.

1. Golf Pride multi compound mid sized, £12 each
2. Cleveland mid sized single compound synthetic rubber £10 each
3. Euro Crossline oversized synthetic rubber £4 each

The Golf Pride replaced my original 'Williams' branded grips (which were really Golf Pride under a different name), they had the poorest 'grip', the least feel and were very hard.
The Cleveland's had much more grip and were more comfortable, I'd be happy with these if I hadn't tried the Euro's
The Euro oversized? Wow! Nothing I've ever purchased has made such a difference to my game. I'd never considered oversized grips but a friend suggested trying some for more 'control' (I've got an average male hand size), the grip/stickiness is the best of the three, the 'feel' is SO much better and the bigger sizing gives me much more confidence, especially with my driver

I used all three grips at the same time, just split my clubs into 3rds with the Golf Pride on 60deg/50 deg/7 iron/4 hybrid, the Cleveland on 56deg/PW/8 iron/5 iron/3 hybrid and the Euro on SW/9iron/6iron/3 wood and Driver. I fell for the Euro grips so much that I'd sometimes choose the wrong club just because it had the fatter grip on it.

A couple of the lower handicap players (playing off of 3 and 4) at my club tried the grips and have now switched to oversized ones themselves.

If you're thinking of changing grips and you get a chance to try some big ones give it a go, I think you might be pleased

Tore it up today, boys! Shot 82 (out in 38). 3 birdies. Played some lovely stuff on the front nine and putted beautifully.

Happy days!

Well played.

We took a trip away from or home club for a change today, and played another local course where some friends are members.

It's only 5800 yards, but tight and tree lined. It was playing much shorter though, due to temporary tee boxes.

Still happy with a 79 though. Only one real blemish on the card on the 3rd where I hooked a 7i OOB off the tee and made treble bogey.

I did 3 putt the last 2 holes too. Fine rain stated coming down and made the greens very dewy, so difficult to make yourself hit putts hard enough.

Not a bad day though.
