One of the first things I bought myself (after a car of course) when I started working was a nice watch. We're going back to 1983 so the fact it cost a few hundred quid back then would suggest I had something on my wrist at the time would the equivalent of a watch that would skin me a four figured sum now. Within a year I had lost it.

I also lost a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses and expensive hats, gloves, scarfs and my wedding ring. Lesson learned I never bought myself anything nice ever again. I have a couple of okish Seiko watches (about £150 odds each) and a Casio G Shock I wear for demolition surveys, swimming and mountainbiking. One of the Seikos is missing at the moment (I think it's in the house somewhere or rather I hope it is).

Basically, I can't have nice stuff. Question is do the Rolex, Omega, Tag and Breitling watches you see hanging off the wrists of the wealthy go missing too and who else is like me and thinks "if this good watch doesn't show up it's Casios for me from now on" and are resigned to cheap and nasty for the rest of their lives?

On holiday. Took it off on a sun lounger by the hotel swimming pool so I didn't have a white stripe round my wrist. Went back up to my room and forgot about it. By the time I remembered it was gone weeping

Judging from the tone of your question I take it you've never lost a watch.

Constantly losing things. I also no longer buy myself nice things for that reason.
I do have 2 pairs of oakleys that my wife bought me for a few years now, one pair live in the glovebox and never leave the car. Always put back after use. And my nicer pair are still in the box they came in in 2013. For all day everyday sunglasses I use primark £2 ones. Never bothered about losing them.

I was bought a nice Armani watch for the wedding and it has been worn 3 or so times since then. Went to put it on for a fancy meal last weekend to find the battery is dead. God knows how long for as it's probably a good year since its been worn.
Don't wear watches day to day tho as they get in the way for work, but remember when I saved for a nice adidas one when I was in school in the late 90's. Wore it home from the shop and whilst passing a slower walker I smacked my arm against the wall scratching the face deeply mad

So now anything nice is either packed away safe, or just not purchased.

A chap lost a sea master in the sea just outside Cherbourg. He was in such a foul mood his wife got the ferry home as didn't want to be on the boat with him. True that.

You'll be telling me people can keep good pens for years next. Have had the odd nice stainless steel Parker or Papermate for Xmas. Don't think I've managed to still have them by the beginning of March. Every hire car, courtesy car, pool car or works van I've ever driven has claimed a CD and pair of sunglasses at least. Am sure I've left stuff in a good few Travel Lodges, Premier Inns, Holiday Inns and various guest houses on my travels too.
Going back to pens. I write with whatever I can lay my hands on while out and about. I tend to have a pen at my first clients site which I'll leave there. I pinch one of the second client which I leave with the third and so goes the day.

's easy, these things don't matter to you. Enough.

Ever (forever) lost a wife, or bairn (child)?

Or wanted to? biggrin

Nope. /smug

And have had several pens for well over 20 years. I don't really see the point in losing something.

I nearly 'lost' a seamaster off my wrist when some Eastern European scrote tried to sly it off my wrist in Manchester.
I noticed it come loose and proceeded to bray the crap out of him.

It's not something done through choice.

This is why Bic pens, £1.99 petrol station watches etc exist.

You are the target market.

Between us, Mrs V. and I have managed to lose an almost entire skiing kit :
  • Brand new pair of 2.00 TR Comps and bindings, plus poles, never been used - lost in transit due to transfer coach operator cock-up during a blizzard en route to Val D'Isere
  • Above ski bag also contained gloves, hats, socks, salopettes, polo-necks, thermals etc
  • Ski poles - pinched when left outside a mountain restaurant at lunchtime
  • Gloves - left on windowsill behind curtain and forgotten when leaving hotel
  • Boots - taken in error from locker room on changeover day by someone who had the same make and model, but different size, grrr!
  • Ski jacket - pinched from boot of car when car broken into
  • Oh, and a ghetto blaster left in the luggage rack of a transfer coach.
At our local ski shop he was always very pleased to see us, our insurance company less so smile

Don't lose loads of stuff but my best is buying a decent pair of sunglasses in one shop, hanging the bag on a hanger in the next shop while I tried something on. Then walked out without any bags. Went back 20 mins later. Gone. Owned for about a 15 minutes!

Working on the car. Took off oakleys and left them on the cylinder head. Finished up, slammed bonnet shut and crack...smashredfacemadfuriousweeping

Now buy cheaper sunglasses.
