help iv ballsed up my 7 series
Discussion
hello all
for you that dont know me im a complete penis,
i had a slight oil leak on my 2010 730d so took it to my local grease monkey and he said it looked like it was coming from the filter housing that bolted onto the block, a bit of research later and i was ready to do the swap,
long story short after may F*ck filled hours i got it all beck together and topped back up with oil and coolant,
Fired her up and all seemed well for a few seconds gave a few light revs and hay-presto oil pissing out of the bottom !!
Looking at it the gasket has obviously not gone on flat and I have sodded it up.
i cant be bothered to attempt it again as im still sulking from the first go,
My question is how do i get it into neutral without starting the engine ????
its currently stuck in my unit so need to get it out to send of to bmw or the local garage,

On my six series I am pretty sure you could change the gear with the engine off. Ignition must be on and foot must be on brake. Easy to forget that one if you're used to manuals
Every auto I've experienced has done this too.I'm sure if you slipped the mechanic a few quid extra he'd refit the filter in situ to save you towing it!

i cant start the engine because theres no oil in it
i did try getting it into nutral using all the above methods but no joy,
iv heard there is a special key to unlock the transmition
I think what others are implying is if you start the car and turn it off very quickly, then no damage should be done. There will still be "some" oil in there. Running it a couple of seconds won't kill it. Don't take my word as gospel though.i did try getting it into nutral using all the above methods but no joy,

Admittedly, they drove it to destruction but it did take ages for that to happen. Just switching on very briefly (i.e a couple of seconds) to get it into neutral probably won't harm it as by draining the oil in the sump won't mean all the oil currently still between any moving surfaces has been completely removed.
(not that I'm taking any actual responsibility )
Don't start it without oil. Even if you did its worth noting that it will almost certainly not give your key back until its put back into park.
As linked above there's pull release to get it out of park. The old methods mentioned above work on older cars but most modern stuff requires some sort of manual release, usually in the most awkward places imaginable, but it doesn't look too bad on the E65.

Maybe the same with yours. Is there nothing in the manual?

in the f01 730d to put it in neutral manually you've got to remove the plastic underbody panels that cover the gearbox housing. once removed youll see a scew. simply screw it in and this puts in in neutral. reason I know is had to do it on my 730d and its a bit of a headache for a job that was easily done on the old bmw by having a level underneath the gearstick
