Hales doesn't look like a test match opener to me. Even in first class cricket his numbers are average. Can't see him lasting in this team for much longer.
I can, it seems as if you have to have two terrible series in order to get dropped. Whilst I never want to go back to the days of being dropped for a couple of bad innings, the pendulum has swung too far the other way.

I think he will get longer than that especially as he opens in the 1 day side.

A ton for Cook, let's hope the rest of the team bat as well. Most of what's wrong with our batting is application rather than skill.

A ton for Root. Vince out playing a dumb shot. The same dumb shot as at Lords, which is very dumb.

Which Balance is playing today?

314-4 at the end of the day.

I've no idea what we do about our middle order, but it's somewhere between poor and ste, mostly down to ego's being larger than talent in shot selection.

Hales was just a wicket looking to happen.

Vince just made the same stupid shot he has done before.

Pleased for Joe Root that he's made a good score, especially as he came in first wicket down, and as early as that isn't far from opening.

Not sure what we do about top middle order, nor find a decent opener to accompany Cook.

Have Cook & Root as openers.

Root wasn't happy as opener, but that was against the Crims to be fair.

He's been a good opener today after Hales brief visit biggrin

I was sat next to a chap at Lords who from the off reckoned Hales was never good enough for the side. It's looking like he was right - the comment above about being a wicket waiting to happen is spot on.

Trouble is, we don't have a natural partner for Cook. Root has been tried there, as have most of those able to yield a bat, to no avail. No idea what can be done here except to perhaps accept that one or both of the openers are "sacrificial" and hope that Root, Ballance, Stokes and Bairstow/Woakes don't have a brain fart (a la Lords. Vince I'm very uncertain about).

Not playing Rashid on this pitch may prove costly, unless Ali has one of his good days.

Be nice to see Root get a double ton.

Decided I need to go to the Oval in August so bought tickets for Day 2 tonight smile

150 up for Root.

I'm not normally a fan of nightwatchmen, but Woakes is doing the sort of cracking job that Broad used to do before wearing a ball on his nose.

Good bat from Woakes. He'll be a bit disappointed I should think but a good session for him.

Think Woakes did exactly the job you can ask of a night watchman. Kept his end up, let Rooty get on with it, 58 off 104 balls is a good knock frankly.

Agreed.

Stokes is doing well too, and now Root gets his double ton!

Hales really does need to take a good look at what these guys are doing.

I can see Root getting out for not much more...but fingers crossed for a 250 (and regardless of how it ends for Root, this has been a top innings).

2.5hrs to go. Can we pile on another 150?

Harsh on Stokes IMO.

Come on Bairstow. A 50 today would be excellent.

Yeah, and Vince too! Ok the ball that got Ballance was a good one but that cross bat waft was a bit of a waste having got himself in.

Absolutely top quality innings by Root.

If I were Cook, I'd go for 600 and declare. Should be enough for us to then get 30-45mins at them.
