Forgot what about Alex Lees from Yorkshire? Is he ready yet?

How can a side play so well one minute and so badly the next. Poor concentration and poor application.

The bowling attack yesterday was very poor and the field didn't seem well set to prevent runs being leaked.

Can't see us getting close on this one now. Unless Bairstow and Ali can repeat their first innings (and some).

Hales definitely would not get another test for me. Any big innings he gets seem more luck than judgement.
Paid the third umpire a visit too....fined 15% of his match fee

Not for me he has had an ordinary year for Yorkshire. One century in fc cricket this year. I'd keep Hales give him the next tour which I think is to India. But Vince doesn't look test match standard . Possibly look at Jennings or Hildreth .

Has Roy done much this year? Possibly open with him and move Hales to three. Lose Vince until he learns that application is more important than style.

Considering the lack of scoring from Hales, Vince and Ballance. You'd do no worse than replacing all three with batsmen who can swing a bat and score runs such as Morgan, Buttler and Roy.

Why not? Couldn't be a lot worse. Hales is lacking confidence. Ballance needs a couple of good knocks perhaps to get some form and I'm certain somewhere inside Vince there's a good test cricketer trying to get out.

I think that's a fair shout, though I quite like Ballance.

We also have Stokes to get fit.

Shabby play this morning. Bairstow scored a good number but seems to have lost his head. Evidently didn't fancy playing tomorrow smile

Difficult to know what to make of this series. When they've played well, they've played very well. And when they've played badly they've been awful.

Bowling attack lost this one.

That was ste.

I know I've said this a few times before, we need to try more players. I don't want to go back to the 80's where so many only played one test, but we really need to give someone a fair go and if they don't cut the mustard send them away with advice on what they need to improve.

I'm inclined to agree.

We have the makings of a decent team, but there are a couple of slots that need filling, and some of the regulars need more pressure for their places.

I'm going to try Edgbaston for the next series...see if it's me jinxing the London games smile

(As an aside, the food and drink at these tests was pretty good, especially the Oval).

That was a great win. Pakistan have opener problems too, Hafeez and Shan Masood are useless.

Overall was a good test series, both sides played some good cricket. Before the series I thought Pakistan would play some good cricket at times but England would be too strong overall. Happy to be proved wrong.

Well played Pakistan - they deserved to get something out of this series.

Where do England go from here? Hales, Vince and Ballance don't look like world class test cricketers to me. Moeen Ali, as a spinner, isn't quite a part timer but he's no front line spinner either. That said he looks good with the bat just now so I wouldn't drop him.

As others have said the core of the team is there with Cook, Root, Bairstow, Stokes (when he's back), Ali (with the bat), Woakes, Broad, Anderson all in good form. I'm guessing that Stokes will replace Finn when he's back so against Bangladesh and India England could have a line up like:

Cook,
??
Root
??
Bairstow
Ali
Stokes
Woakes
Another spinner (I guess they'll go with Rashid).
Broad
Anderson

Morgan? Seriously? Average of 30 playing middle order. Hales average of 27 as an opener. I think he has really tried to get into a test mentality this series and deserves another shot. Morgan has shown he is a one day player.

Vince I agree on.

Ballance again deserves more time. Average over 40...(admitedly most of that early in his England career!)

Boycs having a go in the Telegraph. Hales, Vince and Ballance, 6 innings for an aggregate 44 runs,

Pakistan deserved something out of this series, lost their way at Old Trafford but otherwise they have played well.

Yep, those three need to go with Stokes plus two others back in. Given the strength in batting down the order you could split one bowler one batsman. I'd drop Bell back in in the short term unless there's someone else worthy.

I was more thinking along the lines of Buttler/Roy being suggested.

Hales' has had a very poor series. And even when he puts runs on he looks like a wicket waiting to happen. While we have to get some consistency and experience into the side, I think you also have to be careful not to persevere too long. If he goes on tour (and I suspect he will) it will be interesting to see how he responds.

I'm not sure Bell's county form is suggesting he's ready to be reconsidered and suspect that boat may have sailed.
