Hi,
I'm looking for some advice about suitable ear defenders for rifle shooting.
My 14 year old son is about to start going to the range (Bisley) with his grandad and I want to get him some decent ear defenders.
I've done a bit of googling and it seems that EN352-1 is the H&S standard but there is a huge amount of choice and I've no idea what to get.
Electronic or not? Minimum db? It's difficult to tell how big and heavy the ear defenders are from the pictures too. Probably want something as light as possible.

Does anyone go rifle shooting and can advise please?
Thanks.

Not rifle shooting but clay pigeon shooting, I use ear plugs. They are cheap and don't get in the way when getting my head down on the stock.

Bisley compacts are pretty good for around 20 quid.

Thanks, I think ear defenders are the way to go given his age.
I will check out the Bisley ones.

Just ordered these:

Howard Leight by Honeywell 1013530 Impact Sport Electronic Folding Earmuff

They seem to have hundreds of great reviews so hopefully they will do the job smile

Nor did i for 10 years or more.
Deaf in one ear due to an accident and now hearing in the remaining ear is getting gradually worse.
I would say wear them. Especially at the age outlined in the OP.

I have a pair of 3m Peltor's and they're fantastic.

I use them for clays and game shooting when out with the shotgun but hardly bother when using the rifle. That said almost all of my rifle shooting is game shooting, if I was sitting at the range all day I'd probably wear them.

Whatever you get, make sure it has the ability to have conversations with them on. As in, it's not just a dumb blocker of sound, it needs an external mic so he can keep them on all day. I did three years at bisley with nothing more than rear plugs which I took out when I wasn't spotting or shooting. Given that I was stood only a few metres away, 20 years on, my hearing is now poor. I can't pick out conversations in a crowded room and I put it down to bisley

Thanks Marcg, yes I went for electronic ones in the end but which still have passive protection. He also plays drums so I want to make sure he has some hearing left! smile

FWIW, I use Auritech "Shoot" plugs ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/AURITECH-SHOOT-Generation... ) for club rifle shooting. I love them. Comfortable for over an hour and allow you to have a conversation between shooting without having to take them in/out.

They really take the crack off the rifles as well making it an all-round comfortable experience
