As a non-player, briefly, how does this benefit Italy?

It's basically a spoiling tactic. The Italian scrum half gets in the way and just robs the attack of clean ball and momentum

I've watched rugby for years and have no idea about these tactics and can't even see what the ref is calling.

Is there some Rugby for dummies type publication?

So what's the best way to deal with it?

There's no offside line, so the Italians can stand in the Eng scrum half's passing channels.

Best way for England to deal with it is to pull the Italians into the tackle area to form a ruck. Looks like England are trying to copy it now as I've spotted Danny Care trying to do the same back to the the Italians.

This ref is seriously whistle happy though!

Well apparently not! Ref has just said they cannot pull a player in. Italy has to make the contact

England are getting confused and punchy - giving away penalties in a panic

I think they need to draw the Italians into the Middle.

Keep exploit there being no defenders behind the gain line,.

The answer is to take the ball forward if Italy are standing off and not committing to the "non-ruck".

as Brian Moore would say dull, dull, dull WRT to England's thinking but TBH credit to the Italians for trying something new. After yesterday I was concerned about the Sweaties anyway, so far I'm bloody terrified of the thought of them

This is silly. England haven't a clue on how to deal with this.

Didn't do anything illegal, but that was intentional by Farrell

One unusual tactic will not win the match. The ref is part of it and I bet he gets an earful from Jones at half time.

One would assume that England will come out with a way of dealing with it after half time. I bet an Italian will get a pass into them when the ref manages to call offisde.

Good tweet from Andy Saull (Leeds player)

''No ruck means you don't have to 'use the ball'. Italy not allowed within 1m of the ball, so England should simply just do nothing & win 5-3!"

One thing he didn't do was hurt anyone.

If Italy aren't committing then England need to just up their pick and drive game and do it at pace. As Care's break just showed.

If it's a tackle and not a ruck get your hands in pick it up and drive on.
