Good luck to anyone racing this weekend. I've got a 4 mile road race tomorrow morning (instead of doing a track/hills session - much easier to motivate myself to a hilly 4 mile race than a session on my own), then the next of my monthly 5k races on Tuesday and the second race in the Gwent XC League on the following Sunday.

Aye, I should enter more, I'm getting bored with just running for the sake of it.

Good luck with your events mate.

Great run by Paula. I thought Wami had done enough to mount a decent challenge in the last few hundred metres, especially after twice closing a gap, but PR certainly had the strength this time. Good to see little Isla is already sponsored by Nike hehe

Congrats to all PHers that ran it!

Good thread.
I actually run more miles per year than I drive (not hard - I live in London), but make up for the lack of driving by doing it in 'quality' cars! Now attempting to get back into shape after 8 years off sport. Times from this summer were:

3000m - 8:54
5000m - 15:34
10,000m - 32:04

Still a long way to go before I'm as fit as I used to be, but training is going well - in fact I'm trying out a half marathon on Sunday.

thought i'd keep one of the things i was good at at school going and going and going.....

-5km
-3x/wk after work (1700 - 1830) or at weekend.
-all through year (even christmas day last year...!) - light or dark
-sub 17mins
-route along Bournemouth sea front - mainly pier to pier and back in various different ways

almost managed 10min for 3km run on treadmill before changing to permanent outdoor running wink

would love to run along with any others in the area smile

With that 5k pace your local running club will be delighted to welcome you and will provide people for you to run with. You can find your local club using the club search on www.ukathletics.net - I'd recommend going along not least for the social side of running smile

thanks capt'n!
did check littledown (north bournemouth) harriers a year or 2 ago and found they were only interested in 10km runs usually at 1930 and mostly on friday nights...... too late, too long.
toying (again!) with joining the bournemouth athletic club sprintime for some competition.
only got involved in 1 competition run since 2002 - bournemouth winter 5km series - maybe will go again this month - almost upto speed smile

do 'top-to-bottom' gym workout inbetween run nights - fit shoulders helps a huge amount!

anyone run with any harriers groups around the world?
frequented many barbados hash house harrier meets in early 90s - loved hot running yikes

I joined up with Victoria Park Harriers, but am more interested in the track side than the traditional road / XC harriers activities.

Off to Italy tomorrow for the Trentino Half Marathon. Things were going well up until the end of September, but I've since had one virus after another and have had to all but stop training. 71-72mins should be achieveable, but the temperature is forecast to be as cold as -8C, which might change things.

Is anybody running the London Marathon next year? Thinking of giving it a go, and only about 6 weeks left to get my entry in.

It seems that in order to run a quick half marathon - especially a hilly one up at altitude in the Dolomites - long runs are required. Think I better start training properly :-(

First half 35:05, second half 38:34. Whoops.

I'm training for the Bath Half in March and my weekly long run is 100mins (quite slowly so 14-15 miles). Full training weeks are now 85-95 miles, recovery weeks are 50-60 miles and we're doing 2-3 weeks full then 1 recovery to coincide with the race weekend.

My coach and I have just set out my target race schedule between now and then:
15th Dec - Langdale 10k
13th Jan - Garstang 10k
24th Feb - Bourton 10k
16th Mar - Bath Half

Ha, funny.

wink

5 hours 11 minutes 27 seconds. Got put right at the back for the start so had to push through masses of crowds. Quite happy considering I did hardly any training.

Would definitely recommend it, fantastic atmosphere, wearing a Union Jack top meant I got loads of support from the crowds - they love a plucky Brit!

Congrats on the marathon, Mahatma.

[quote=ewenmmy weekly long run is 100mins

Should be plenty - I couldn't be bothered going over the hour, which may explain my downfall - my 10km split of 33:35 quite rightly felt like walking, but I was already the wrong side of 54mins at 10M and it was all downhill from there (in terms of speed, not the course which was pretty much uphill to the finish!)

I'm going to send off my entry to the London marathon which should inspire me to get out there for a bit longer.

Hi everyone...i'm a bit of a nutter (lets get that out of the way)

Great thread and just wanted to add my story.

I love a spot of running and ive completed eleven marathons (7 x London, 1 x New York, 2x Nottingham & 1 x Toronto)
to date with a best time of 3:26, although thats not many compared to some (ran with a old boy last year who had ran over 100 marathons and the last one he'd done was all underground in a salt mine (in Germany)yikes) but being 15 stone and 6ft1 doesn't help.

I also like a bit of random late night running (as i'm guaranteed to be on my own) and only the other week decided to get the train to Loughborough (from Nottingham) at 9pm on the Friday night and run back, taking the long way around and running 21.8 miles...just for the crack. Although i did get attacked by a couple of gritters on route.

If i may, id like to show you my running top (see below). At the age of twelve i was taken shopping by my mother for clothes and spotted a hooded top that i just had to have (we are all buggers at that age). It was £80 and quite a lot of money in those days, esp. as my mother was convinced that i would only wear it a couple of times. I made a promise to her there and then that i would always wear it and even now i still remind her (some 20 years later) that 'i said i'd wear it, didn't i?' hehe

Its been worn in sweltering heats (with the hood up) and in -40 (in the wind chill) temperatures. The front pocket was removed for weight saving and slowly over the years it has ripped under the arms and has also become translucent (with it being so thin now). The under arms have dried in sweat (nice) and there is no way in hell that you'd ever that stain out.

Here it is...

and me wearing it at the New York Marathon

wavey Hi Guy's,

Still here and alive (just....)
Well today was the marathon debut and it didn't really go to plan.......

Stood on the start line I had the urge to do a Paula - but decided against it (a decision I would later come to regret..) so the gun goes off and after about 200 yards I spy some public loo's - great I'll dive in and be out in no time.
Came out and wasn't too far off my pace but then when we got out of town and into the University and Park - and I got stuck and held up in a big group and was going backwards frown - got to 6 miles in just under 55 minutes!!
Got a bit wound up and once I got a bit of clear space stupidly (another big mistake) set about getting some time back and put in 3 sub 8 minute miles, went through 10 miles in 85 mins and then through Half in 1 hr 51 - and felt pretty good and was back on track.
Things weren't too bad until 16.5 miles when the road to Holme Pierrepont hall turned out to be a pot hole filled dirt and stone track - my ankles were feeling it. Got into the water sports centre and straight into a nasty head wind which seemed to be there for most of the 4 miles through there frown
Went through 22 miles in 3 hours 20 (which was my target) so I was on for a sub 4 hour.
About 2 minutes after 22 miles I hit the wall - big time!! I completely died. I set myself a new personal worst for that mile an embarrassing 14.5 minutes!!
Got to the water station at 23 and took on all the lucozade and water I could but still shuffled through in 13 minutes. Felt a bit better at 24 and got back down to 10 minute miles but it was a bit late by then.
Felt stronger towards the end and had a bit of a push for the finish.

Managed to get round in 4hours 10minutes.

So a fair few valuable lesson learnt for the next one.

Well done Tigger thumbup - respectable time on a fairly hilly course.

Chris

Well done Woody. Its a killer when the half marathon runners peel off at the 13 mile point and you have to keep on running...irked
