you bought a treadmill instead or running down country roads? i'd rather enjoy running biggrin

i HATE treadmills. i find them seriously boring and don't like my pace being dictated, and don't want to press a button when i want to speed up; i also like seeing nice scenery, changes in gradients etc. interval sessions aren't as easy as you can't "sprint start" etc....urgh, can't stand 'em!

but....if you really must, there isn't much to advise to be honest. have it set to 1-2 degrees to make it a little more realistic.

I have to say I agree. Ran it yesterday for the first time - baggage storage was an utter joke (dumped at the side of the street with a 'security' firm to watch over them), an endless queue just to get to the start line, crap route (doubled back on itself several times, and you spent too much time running in tunnels), and massively oversubscribed. Simply put, there was too many people. Starting the run in waves like on the BUPA 10k might have helped. Hardly any water stops and no distance markers either.
The Leeds Abbey Dash later in the year has always been good. I didn't make it last year but did it three years in a row before that. In the last year they introduced colour coded bibs, and although not enforced, the start was pretty good. Boring course but flat, cool weather and I got a PB every year smile

Don't get me wrong, I love the country roads and would love to run on them.

But it's just not safe enough (in my view) to do this. High hedges, no verges to jump into, blind corners and crests. -Rally boys kissing apexes at speed, blind elderly drivers and the general issue of being unable to stop in the distance you can see to be clear amongst those who treat said challenging B roads as suburban dual carriageway. It's a great to drive mind...

So it's treadmill or get fat. -OK. Get fatter.

Thanks for the info though... smile

Assuming you're in the UK, I'd buy my local OS map(s) (1:25000 scale) and find some footpaths, bridleways and byways to run on. Offroad running is great exercise and helps with core strength, plus you get to be outside and get a very good knowledge of your local area.

As for treadmills: at least 1 on the incline, try to concentrate on running style, get a big fan as you will sweat a lot!

Thanks. -Just bought a fan.

I did look at footpaths etc, (and having grown up in the area had a reasonable prior knowledge) but there's nothing 'runnable' within the immediate vicinity. -It's rural West Wales so most paths cross fields which are uneven (had enough of sprains as it is) and covered in longish grass or are simply too boggy for normal training. -They're great to walk, and I do, but not really a viable regular training option. -I was spoilt previously living by the sea in a town where you could run for miles on flat tarmac next to the beach and pick any one of many circular runs and distances depending on mood.

I do have some options if I'm willing to drive, but what I love about running is lacing up the trainers and legging it out of the front door...

I'd get a pair of knobbly shoes and run on the paths - surely you'll naturally adjust your gait, speed, technique etc. for the surface you're on and probably avoid being injured. Running on 'not-tarmac' (I don't mean paving stones) is so much nicer than tarmac.

I run on that sort of stuff most days <shrug>. In about 30 mins I'll be running home from work and deliberately choosing an offroad route despite it being longer, slower, rougher and much muddier hehe

After a very long day (setting off from Singapore at midnight local time), I made it to a 10,000m track race near Bedford. With terrible weather and needing a strong coffee just to stay awake, I didn't expect much and went out quite slowly.

Luckily it did feel slow and I was able to pick up the pace from 4km. I was pleasantly surprised to run splits of 16:18 and 16:00. That's my 3rd fastest 10km ever, so hopefully I can get under 32 minutes with some training and better preparation.

Ran 9k in my league race at Middlesex Uni on Wed, off road and boggy in 39.59. Set off with someone who usually does 10k about a minute quicker than me, and managed to beat him by 45 secs. League now finished sadly, good grub and company, St Albans striders won nearly all the prizes at least my club stayed up.

Stevenage trail marathon in the morning, expecting about 5 hours with all the check in stops and mud. Just need to sort my feet for the morning, yuk. My wife is riding a 100km road race, I will see if I can beat her back as it starts at the same place.

And to take advantage of my wife and daughter's holiday without me, I've added another sub 9 min 3000m to the week's training.

Looking forward to a run in dry conditions tomorrow!

Stevenage trail marathon out of the way, 4h 30m in muddy conditions. We had one runner fall in a big puddle pretty bad in parts. I pushed myself too hard in the last 2 miles though, which were all uphill and feel grotty now. The good news is that I lasted until 24 miles. These trail marathons are brilliant, meet such great people The top UK marathoner was there today, 850 in total.

Herts Stroller next 53 miles, any tips on how to best handle this distance in terms of walk/run split. I have 20 hours to complete it so there is no real rush to finish.

I ran the windmill half today too. My first running event since a 3 mile fun run when I was 9 years old (now 32).

Just wanted to finish this time, see how i got on and what the score was. Was pleased to finish but disappointed with 2hrs 20mins. Really hit the wall after 9 miles. Learned the value of eating correctly the day before a race and that I think i would really benefit from trying gels.

Still, a steep learning curve which I really enjoyed. Came away wanting to improve, get my time below 2hrs and maybe try a 10k run. Don't feel I'm designed to do a marathon!

Did you enjoy the run?

I only started running in jan (age 42) joined a local running club (Blackburn road runners) I had signed up for the Preston Guild Marathon so thought the running club would help me, this was my second half in a month I ran a 2:18 last month in the freckleton which I was very disappointed with which is why I signed up for this.

I enjoyed the run would of like the wind to be a bit lower coming back from the windmill, and pleased my miles seemed to be a more constant even pace unlike freckleton where I burnt out at 9 mile,

Tried my first run after a month off with a back injury, a hilly 8k at quite an easy pace at my inlaws in the Scottish Borders. No adverse reaction from my back so hope to crack on now.

Thanks chaps.

I'm having a scout around for some kind of route which would work for me.

However, this rainy morning I got up early and did an zippy paced 30 mins on the treadmill with a few intervals, decent music pumping out and enjoyed it. Had I not had this option I suspect I would have persuaded myself I didn't have time for a run...

I'm continuing my winter training this July with another 50 minute hilly, muddy run on the footpaths around Bath Uni this lunchtime. The multi-terrain shoes are taking a pounding this year hehe
