Cooler in the morning but I find it much harder to persuade the body to work hard! Sessions for me need to be lunchtime or later, pre-breakfast is good for slow/steady runs. hehe

Core strength is pretty much fine. I'm an infantry reservist and cope fine with the tasks in that.

re footstrike, I'm definately not an optimal sort, mostly a heel striker, but my reading up on this in the past suggested that once you got past the bumf of people trying to sell you their own personal technique, it doesnt really matter provided your centre of gravity is over your strike, which it is - unless I'm letting my legs go down a hill.

I'd agree to an extent, but bio-mechanically using the muscles, tendons and ligaments of the foot and calf to help absorb the impact of running seems better to me than landing on the heel and using the leg bones and knee joints to help absorb the impact. My coach's advice is to land on the ball of the foot (wide area, less point-pressure on impact) with the heel a mere sliver off the ground (so utilising the foot and calf muscles).

Hi, new old runner here.

In 2004-2006 i was doing 10k in 40 mins half in 1.29 then stopped running and got fat.

Yesterday i went out and did 5 miles with 2 st hills at the end in 50 mins,bit pissed off it was 10 min miles but i suppose i have 2 stone of extra lard to move now.

What are you post race stretching routines? do you do like 10mins of stretches or use those foam roller things?

I do the bend leg so foot touches ass stretch and tangle of the stairs for calve muscles.

Off into the hills tomorrow to do another 5 maybe 6 miles before it gets too hot.

Ran the City of London mile today, 6.02 for me. A good free event. Even won a marathon talk competition and got entry to the VIP area, however no celebs in sight!

Our club has 4 teams this year with 8 in each. There is also the idea of doing the Newbury parkrun on Saturday morning as well - as if doing 6 or so 5 mile laps as part of Endure 24 wasnt enough...

Hoping someone can help. I went to a physio a couple of months ago and was told I've got shin splints related to tight hips forcing my feet outwards, and was given a series of stretches to do daily. One involves making use of a second person but I've never been convinced we're getting it right but can't find diagrams/instruction of the stretch (as I don't know what it's called.)

The stretch involves me laying on my front, bending my knee so that my foot is in the air. Second person then pulls outwards until I can feel the resistance strongly and then holds for 10 seconds before releasing. I'm just feeling the stretch in my knee rather than hips.

Anyone know what that stretch is called?

Still going through a rough patch with various health issues at the moment so not running much at all (2-3 times per week, only 4-5 mile runs at a steady 7:10-7:30/mile).

I'm still being sick basically every day (I'd say I maybe get 1 day of not being sick per week), been referred for a 2nd gastroscopy (the last one was 8 months ago and they want to check to see if anything has progressed....e.g. hernia, cancer etc though that's extremely unlikely). Also they want to take more blood tests, I need a barium swallow, I've got a 5th (yes, 5th!!) set of tablets to try and have also been referred to see a gastroenterologist.

Basically feel bloated most of the time, losing sleep due to waking up to be sick (only ever bile, keep my food down). Yesterday was horrendous....was sick 6 times between 4:30am and 10:15am, each time "heaving/wretching" over 30 times.....as you can imagine, after mornings like this I really don't feel like running.

To cap that off I've also been suffering wisdom tooth pain and have now got a 2nd dose of antibiotics for an infection and due to have my remaining 2 wisdom teeth out.

So overall, I'm a right bundle of health! frown

Really getting me down because back in Feb I really felt like I was getting back to my former self, I wasn't there but I was running reasonably well and now I just can't be arsed to go running because I feel like st all the time. Still, when (or if!) this problem is ever sorted I'll get back to it.

If your feet are externally rotated at rest that's usually caused by a tight piriformis. In which case, there are easier stretches for that than you have described. This is quite a simple one

edit - If you do have shin splints it's still worth looking at working on your tibialis anterior muscle as well as tibialis posterior too.

That's one of the three stretches he gave me to do. A bit of playing about sorted the other stretch - I'd forgotten I needed to tense up/resist the stretch, transfered the stretch down to my hips. Much better.

In my continuing quest for new challenges and motivation for my running, I've just sorted out our family holiday at the end of September. We're visiting friends near Inverness for a week, that just happens to coincide with the Loch Ness Marathon... So, 14 weeks (including this one) to go before my 3rd marathon start and all being well, my first finish.

Plus points for me are:
Low key event
Lovely scenery (assuming the weather plays along)
Local to some friends
Easy to get to (Easyjet from Bristol - less than £200 return for three of us).

The route looks pretty good, overall downhill but with a nasty little lump in the last third. I just need to work out how to train for one of these things! I think I'll chat with my coach this evening to set some targets and training. I think my stretch target will be 2:30, core target 2:37 (6 min/mile), acceptable 2:45.

Has anyone got any suggestions for a running watch? I've only been running for a few months and mainly at the gym, and using the display on the treadmill is fine. But the few times I have ventured outside I find myself running too fast and need to slow to a pace I'm comfortable with/similar to my gym pace.

Anything from the Garmin forerunner range is probably your best option. I have a 910XT and my girlfriend a FR10, cant fault either of them.

More Garmin here - I use a 610 and did have a 210. My wife uses a 310.

Range of prices and features so choose what you need.
