2nd scan with done yesterday. Wasn't too good, I nearly passed out lying down (I often get dizzy, but yesterday was horrendous), I vomited afterwards.... It's definitely (slowly) getting worse.
Results are already at Southampton neuro department who are amongst the best in the UK. So... Just a waiting game for next Wednesday or so now. Good to he a long wait!
I've really let myself go food-wise. Been terrible, no running either but fk it. I'll be back to being healthy from Monday. Just need some time to process things for now.

Just want to start by wishing all the very best in your recovery to Ross and hope you can get back running as soon as is possible
I've never been a runner. I've had shin splints for the best part of 20 years so any running was halted within a few hundred yards. I've been playing 5 a side for several years on 3G surfaces and the shin splints has been fine.
So yesterday i decided to go for my first ever voluntary run to improve my fitness; it's also been recommended by my physio to help ease my lower back (that's a different story)
I downloaded a cadence app to my phone to help slow me down (i think i'm a sprinter by nature) and went on what turned out to be a mile run round a big block in about 15 minutes although i didn't time it.
Towards the end, my shins were beginning to ache but today i feel ok.
I'm about to repeat the exercise today but should i try in instigate a plan to build myself up or should i just play it by ear and keep repeating my lap until i feel stronger? In terms of targets, i don't really have one however i would just like to be able to run without shin pain and maybe run for an hour.
In terms of footwear i'm wearing these with some orthotic insoles: http://reviews.nike.com/9191/316801/nike-air-zoom-...

I was up before 6am this morning to try my hand at registration for the Brass Monkey Half (UK's flattest half marathon at 7.5m of elevation gain) - 396 other crazy fools with the same thing on their minds!
Thankfully managed to get my entry in without any fuss after missing out on the previous 2 years!

Bit of advice please on times.
I have been running on and off(whilst participating in other sports) for about 18 months. I am thinking about entering a marathon in May as a 50th birthday challenge, however I want a goal so I am setting a sub 4 hr time.
Current bests are
5k 25 mins
10k 53mins
10 miles 1hr 28mins
not done further yet
is there a good race calculator, pace setter on line I can use to see what improvements I need to make. I feel its a realistic challenge, any suggestions appreciated.
I'm joining a running club in the next few weeks.

Try looking at the Jack Daniels vdot calculator. Not sure if that's what you're after. I have been running on and off(whilst participating in other sports) for about 18 months. You are running pretty much identical times to me and I ran my first half marathon in September in 2hrs dead so I would have thought with plenty of training sub 4 hrs is feasible, I am not in a running club but I think that will make a world of difference for you.I have been running on and off(whilst participating in other sports) for about 18 months. Everyone I spoke too when I was running the marathon was with a running club so that will bring your pace on a fair bit I would think, good luck.
Brass Monkey looks very flat. I was planning on doing a local half this month but it was over subscribed. Got an entry for Raceway at the Shakespears drag strip which is advertised as being flat for next week.
Got up early to do my long run and did 22k quicker than a couple of my half times.

Having suffered with Patella tendon issues I imposed a 2 month lay-off, with some gentle squats and stretching.
I've recently begun short, easy runs (up to 3km the other day) twice a week after a walking/cycling warm-up.
The patella tendons (both legs...) are still feeling a bit creaky when I start and one is a bit tender when kneeling, but nothing too untoward.
In the days since my run, my recurring soleus problems (tightness and discomfort at discrete points) seem to have come back, though. Aaaaaaaaaaagggggggghhhhhhhhh!!!
ps. The MCL twinge is also back.....

Nearly 3 years after my last marathon and 10 months since an operation on my foot, I feel I'm actually able to run 3-4 times a week for decent distances. Today I did 11k of easy running in 47 mins with no twinges or issues and I ran 5.2 miles 2 days prior and feel like I am able to up the miles to more than 20 a week. (Was 60-70 at peak fitness)
I'm not counting my chickens yet, but with a sub 20 min parkrun under my belt, I feel that I can start getting back to proper fitness and maybe even get close to the times I used to run.
Aiming for a sub 19min parkrun by end Jan... you heard it here first

Having not contributed to this thread for a VERY long time, I thought I would pop in to say hello again.
Since my last marathon in 2011, I lost interest in running. 2012 and 2013 were very poor running wise (although I did do my first triathlon in August '13) but since Nov 2013 I had been running a couple of times a week until the summer holidays. Alcohol, food and holidays took over (for 3.5 months) and I completed my first run on the 11th. 7.2km in 39 minutes which was quite poor. (PB from 2011 was 31mins).
I have signed up for the Frankfurt marathon which is the end of October next year and I want to run 3.45. I managed 4.22 in 2011, with a 1.53 half, but I did not run any further than 13km whilst training. At 30km, my legs just gave way!
I thought that if I kept a record of training here, it would keep up the motivation levels somewhat.

I hope all is well here. For those who are remotely interested in what's going on with me then follow my thread "what's wrong with me" in health matters, which I'm updating regularly.

I'm a runner too, and with a club and had a reasonable good first year, It took me a while to get into racing due to some personal anxiety issues but managed to d 4 races this year which went well completing a 1/2 marathon but at the last one 10k in October everything blew up on me, didn't enjoy the race after hurting myself half way round and as a result have had a trapped siatica and muscular calf damage.
Been to the physio and im taking it very steadily my enthusiasm and drive for it is rock bottom at the moment and I'm also confused as to why this is.
I have no plans for anything at the moment, I did want to do the London Marathon but that's shelved at the moment on the basis that there's more to running than just that, but I may look more at trail running which seems to match more with me due to my hillwalking background, im finding traffic and roads not very friendly.
As for racing i seem to need to have a huge motivation and inspiration to do these so this may not be something i do very much of or have any plans for rather than to go and do one that jumps out at me as a last minute thought, sometimes i just like to get out on my own and run my own route.
