Wow!! Bitter this morning and there was frost on the grass, ice on the pavements and it felt freezing. Only ran 40 minutes, but the river Thames looked great with the mist just above it

Agree I thought it was cold and I ran 5 and a half miles this morning but it was nice to be out there although it was a bit slippy in places.

Cold this morning, but nothing like yesterday. Did 48 minutes and no ice on the pavements. I love the really cold mornings as long as there is no ice on the roads. It's a great to feel the icy wind and try to keep warm by moving a little faster.

Came home from work last night, got my gear on all keyed up to run 15k. Did the bedtime routine with the kids but that took longer than expected. Opened the front door and it was chucking it down, and felt freezing cold. For the first time I turned round and went back inside, I couldn't face it.
Feel a bit silly now, I should have gone out but I will go this lunchtime.
Does anyone still go out when it is really tipping it down, or am I being soft?!

Nope, it's tipping it down, you're wet, get a cold, slip, it's miserable and you're not enjoying it. Live to fight another day.

Sunday it was tipping it down all day with me and I decided not to run. If you are out and it starts bucketing down, then get on with it. If it's a light drizzle, then fine....... but if it's raining cats and dogs before you start, then unless it's a race or key training, it's not worth the hassle.

5.5 miles this morning in 39:30 and thats 3 days on the bounce for me.... Thursday off, Friday 5 miles and Saturday Mountain biking!

Agree with the general consensus that it's fine if it's chucking buckets partway through your run, but I whimp out if it's like cats and dogs before I've even started. Fresh snow I'm happy to run in as well.

Touch wood, I've always been lucky enough to race in decent conditions.

Still get out there even if it's tipping down.

Sunday morning was out in the rain and mud with a few guys from the run club. My 12 year old boy came with us and declared it great fun!

Last night was run club night - tipping down when I went out but had stopped by the time we started. By this point obviously I had the gore tex on so ended up having to do the fartlek/hills/sprints session with it tied roudn my waist.

I am similar and I don't mind snow or the bitter cold but I just don't go for a run if its tipping it down and because I only run for fun I don't find it fun if its chucking it down.

I tried going for a run once when it was tipping it down. Being soaked through to the bone after about 10 minutes meant that it was in no way fun.

First time this year I had to run with full lengths, hoody and gloves. 44 minutes which wasn't too bad either.

Thanks for sharing that and pleased I only spend £40 on my Asics now and they did me proud when I ran my last half marathon in fact the guy I ran it with has had his feet tested to suit his trainers...that didn't seem to help him much as he finished 6 mins behind me!

I must admit though I had considered getting trainers that match my running style but I don't think I will bother now though and its weird because I read a book and it said trainers just get in the way of things and if it was feasible it said its far better to run bare foot if you want to go quicker apparently.

Recent research suggests distance running barefoot is detrimental to foot health.

You will be better off with properly fitted shoes. The chap who finished 6mins behind you, may have been 10mins behind if he hadn't.

Depends on mileage, a few miles a week? No biggy. 50 miles a week and you'll seriously notice a difference.

Cheers

I don't disagree Ross and I hardly run any meaningful miles and if you are running say 50 miles a week I would have thought it makes sense to spend the money on trainers as with pretty much anything in life you get what you pay for.

The most I ever run a week is 22 miles so that's hardly serious running and I would imagine all the pro runners spend plenty on trainers and it works well for them.

i run to and from work about 3-4 times a week with the rest cycling, got my PB for 5.2Km down to 23.09, reckon i can get it under 23 as there are two bridges i have to go over.

well impressed as when i started it in the early part of the year i was getting 29 mins.

dark mornings and nights are not helping though.

Haven't popped into this thread for a while due to lack of motivation but have to start back again as I'm in the Wokingham half in Feb.

Just want to wish Ross a speedy recovery as he has always had time for advice and encouragement in this and other threads.

I did something that I haven't done for a long time today I went for a run without any planned time, distance or direction. Just arrived home and worked out the route and time. 10.6km in 62 minutes which is very poor but this is the first run I have really enjoyed running for a long time.

This is something I should do more often.
