I dont see it so often at the parkrun I go to but I do see what you mean. Generally I will take something with me if I am going out for 8 miles or longer but less than that and I dont bother as its not really needed.

The examples I give are for when I am training for a half or full so I dont need the 'security' of a bottle on the shorter stuff smile

15 awful km last night - never got into it and just ground it out. Ran straight out from home too, so at 7km had no choice but to complete, or cut just one measly km off it and turn back. I'm hoping time on feet counts for a lot.

It does! Some days are just like that. Miles in the bank and I'll bet you feel better about it than you would if you'd not bothered going out.

Hi guys, new to the thread so please point me in the right direction to where this has been covered.
I've just committed to the Brighton Marathon in April and I haven't done any running in 18 years...
...don't worry it's not as bad as it sounds...I only smoked for the first 16 of those...

No really it's not as bad as all that, when I gave up smoking I took up cycling and in the last 2 1/2 years I've done several 100 mile and 150 mile rides so I do have some fitness and cardio ability but I'm under no illusion that this translates directly to running, different muscle groups, cycling gives you a rest on downhill, equipment is vastly different etc.

I've got 7 weeks to be ready and yes it's not enough time but I've committed to it and it will be done so I need a few pointers.

1) Kit. It's going to be similar to cycling gear in terms of material and wicking but I could do with some pointers shorts and tops wise, footwear wise I have a fitting with a local indy specialist.
2) Training goals. I know I have the endurance to complete having done some 10 hours+ days on a bike but I'd appreciate a few links to/solid ideas on a build up schedule in terms of hours /mileage done as I approach the day.
3) I ride with a heart rate monitor and have a good idea of my threshold, but I'm used to having a Garmin under my nose to monitor it, any suggestions?
4) Some people may suggest I don't do it at such short notice...lalala fingers in ears...it is being done wink

My 2p-worth...

1. Kit - I prefer Nike DriFit kit but most brands do good stuff. One thing to note - running shorts (non-lycra) have a inner brief so you don't wear anything under them.
2. Training - plenty of online beginner marathon guides, some free. IMO you need time on feet as running is very different to cycling in terms of muscle fatigue from the impact and stop-start action. Your endurance is there already, so you need to get used to running distance.
3. Tech - you can get a Garmin watch to satisfy your data needs. The Forerunner options are good.

Cheere ewenm - legs much better today. That satisfying lingering tiredness of a long run. Maybe it's trying to do long runs in the pitch dark that's mentally hard!

As for seven weeks to mara - go for it!

Sounds like you've got shoes covered off, but one thing - wear your kit a bit before raceday - you don't want the running equivalent of saddle sores. Weird as it sounds, I use sellotape over the nipples. Bear with me here. A bit of rub can be quite painful, but so can removing elastoplast. I found sellotape sticks, but isn't awful to remove. Vaseline stains my tops.

Ditto on the Garmin, preferable with HR to satisfy the geek in you.

The one word of caution would be to remember that you are very fit on a muscular level, but your joints and connective tissue are not used to the impact running delivers, so your heart and lungs are stronger than your tendons right now. This is prime injury-through-overdoing territory, so take it easy. With just seven weeks and no running, making it round in one piece is a serious achievement in itself.

Couple of rest days for me now before the Bath Half on Sunday. I'd normally only take one rest day but I've had a slightly dodgy stomach this week and a few muscular niggles so I'm giving all that time to recover. Unfortunately the weather forecast is for strong wind on Sunday so hitting a target time could be tough. A training partner and I are planning to share the work for each other with a target of 5:20/mile but the wind might destroy that.

Any other PHers doing Bath?

Incredible pace over a half. 1:09:55 would have got you 6th place at the half I ran last year (Gosport).

PB is 1:07:33 but I'm not in that shape right now. 5:20/mile will be tough, right on the upper end of my current fitness, hence why I think the wind will be a significant factor.

I've often thought about doing Gosport as friends tend to do it. It's not quite the right time of year for me though as I'm into the XC season by them and can't have too many race-weekend days away from the family.

I thought I was going well getting my half time to sub a 90 but, as with all these things, there is always someone quicker smile

The new course at Gosport introduced last year is as flat as you can get for the area so, if you want to go for it on a flat course (I dont know what Bath is like), its well worth doing.

Bath's flat(ish) and goes past the end of my road twice so quite convenient for me hehe My only concern about Gosport is potential exposure to the wind, but as the weekend forecast shows no race is immune from that.

Yes, that is the one unknown. Both times I have run it its been a typical early winters day - cold but clear.

But having been down there when the weather is really giving it some, that would change the race completely as you would be running with a headwind for several miles a few times on the route which would ruin any chance of a quick time.

I try to have target races approximately every 3 months, so Gosport could work as a late year target alongside the county XC championships. We'll see how my daughter's first term at school is going first!

Rest of my year is panning out nicely:
01Mar: Bath Half - TARGET RACE!
17May: Keswick Mountain Festival 25k trail race
28Jun: Mont Blanc Marathon Festival Cross Race (25k in Chamonix valley) - TARGET RACE!
06Sep: Chippenham Half (maybe)
12Sep: World Masters Mountain Running Champs (10k in Betws-y-Coed, V35 category) - TARGET RACE!

Various other races will slot in no doubt, a mix of parkrun as training (run there + parkrun + run home) and proper races.

Anyone else got a race/event schedule planned out?

As KTF said 5.20 is very good going. It is also the time I am aiming for but that will my KM time hehe

My plan for the year is so

8th March Frankfurt Half (Under 1.53 but hoping for a 1.50)
25th May Schwannheim Pfingstlauf 10km (under 52 minutes)
30th May Kent Roadrunner Marathon (under 4 hours)
25th October Frankfurt Marathon (under 3.50)

I'll try and find something to aim for during the summer. Maybe another half or two if I can find something local.

Good luck on Sunday, Ewen. I enjoyed the 2013 race, but found it to be such an expensive weekend what with travel, hotel and eating out costs factored in on top of a steep entry price.

I recently plotted out my schedule for the rest of the year and it looks like this:

Silverstone Half Marathon – Sunday 15th March - Target race
Ronnie Bowker 10k – Sunday 12th April
DK 10k – Wednesday 6th May
Tewkesbury Half Marathon – Sunday 17th May - Target race
2 Castles 10k – Sunday 14th June
Caerphilly 10k – Sunday 21st June
Wythall Hollywood 10k – Sunday 12th July
Magor Marsh 10k – Sunday 26th July - Target race
Cardiff 10k – Sunday 6th September - Target race
Cardiff Half Marathon – Sunday 4th October - Target race
Great Birmingham Run - Sunday 18th October

I started running about 15 months ago after 25 years of cycling up to 4000 miles per year. It's a hard transition to make as you use your legs muscles in different ways, so it's essential that you take it very easy in the beginning and build up the speed and distance slowly. Also stretch lots!

You know that you're daft for commiting to a marathon this close so I won't mention that smile

Hi, Bath will be my first half on Sunday. My question is does anyone actually get disqualified for wearing headphones? I know you shouldn't, but a mate who did it last year said he spotted lots of people wearing them. Its just that I've always trained with them to keep a ear on my pace.

At Gosport last year there were plenty of signs saying no headphones and people still ran with them.

Along the route, and at the finish, the marshals were keeping an eye out for people running with them in and anyone they saw were disqualified afterwards.

I don't run with headphones but if there are rules saying they are not allowed in a race then don't run with them. Unless you are happy that you may be disqualified that is.

I guess I'm not going to be losing a gold medal if I do get disqualified
