4K into a run last night, I felt the beginnings of a twinge in the left calf so I immediately slowed and walked home.

Having had a successful off road run on Saturday with no ill effects, I had been picking up the pace a little for a couple of hundred metres at a time yesterday, although wasn't going at all fast as my speed appears to have disappeared anyway.

There was some tightness and a small sharp pain this morning, although it seems to have eased during the day and I was able to do 3x15 sets of both straight and bent leg calf raises and lowers (body weight only) on each leg this evening with no discomfort at all.

It's very, very peculiar.

It doesn't bode well for an off-road Half-marathon in a couple of months' time rolleyes

ps. It seems that some men of 35-50 are plagued with this sort of problem for years.

Encouraged by the apparent recovery, I tried running a few steps whilst pushing my son in his buggy earlier.

The calf twinge returned immediately.

It is presumably resulting from the dynamic shock-loading of running rather than the fairly static loads of lifting a weight.

What a horrible frustration - I hope you can resolve. Being out for almost 2 weeks due to cold is bad enough but with injury you never know when you can be back to it.

It started in Feb 2013, returned many times and had been much better since early this year, when I actually managed to complete some races. It is extremely frustrating that it has come back again.

Oddly, the calf felt fine again this morning.

When I first started training for an offroad and very hilly half marathon the advice I kept getting was to do some core work - not just running. So I did, incorporating it into my training. But whilst never doubting that advice I can't say I ever understood it either or felt the benefits when out on the hills.

I've just taken my laden pack (loaded with all my race gear - about 4kg including 1.5L of water) out for a 10K trail run as a bit of a testing session, see if anything bugs me or if I need to adjust anything. And on the muddy steep ascents I felt every gram. I could feel my lower back protesting. Grateful for a practical lesson on why the core work is important on the hills.

And whilst there's not much scope left for trimming weight from my pack I will be putting my gear on a diet. Very much a practical lesson to reinforce the theory.

I have done a lot of core (and upper and lower body) strength and flexibility work over the past year. I notice the difference in stability when running and mountain biking and improved strength when carrying children, mountain bikes and other awkward loads.

Made my 10 mile race debut this morning with a target of going under 65 minutes (6:30 per mile). Finished in 64:16 (6:26) on a 2 lap course with a long 3% drag in the middle of both laps! With about a month of training to go until my half marathon in January on a flat course, I'm tempted to go out at that pace again...

I managed two runs last weeks one of which with the OH. She is recovering from a sprained ankle she suffered in October so is still taking it easy (5:40 -6:00 min/km). I am going to be jogging with her on my 'off' days to get my legs used to a 5 to 6 day week and will up the pace with her as she wants to do a 10k in May in 55 minutes.

Inspired by a problem-free 1km run yesterday, I decided to head out for an easy one at lunch.

I felt a little twinge in the calf and had to stop and walk at 0.9Km with a sharp sensation deep in the left calf.

To be sensible, I'm going to have to give it about 3 weeks away running before trying again.

It looks like I'll be wasting yet more race entries...

Just been out for an hour's steady run (9mi, 146m+) in the unseasonably warm but very very wet December weather here. Last day of work for me until 4th Jan so looking forward to getting some miles in over the Christmas period. Up north for a week so will try to get out on the fells if I can.

Hope everyone else can get out over the holiday period or at least rest up and enjoy the food and drink if injured.

Have you tried swimming? Maybe give your legs a rest for a few weeks and go to the pool for some non impact training?

I just did my last run in the city for this year. About 35 minutes for a 7.5k but I can really feel the difference after having a few drinks that day before now. Getting old is a bd!

I need to make the effort to go swimming. The local pool timetable isn't great, so I may need to go further afield.

Fortunately, cycling seems fine.

Had I not been too keen to get back to running (and o try prevent putting my fitness back 6 months) I might recovered by now....

Your injury sounds "tendony". Surely a muscle would have healed completely by now? The slow healing and the inability to deal with high peak loads says tendon, not muscle, at least to this idiot.

In the past when I've had similar, I've been told that it was muscular. It appears to be the soleus muscle which flexes the foot when the knee is bent.

Just had a glorious run out here in the US. For the last few weeks it's been hitting 20-22C in the day, but dropping to 4-5C at night so running has been great. It's now cooling a lot and is about 5C at 5pm so I just got in 8.2 in just under an hour on a pretty hilly course. I'm hoping Santa brings me a new running watch so I can add elevation to Strava.

Back to the UK for Christmas so might sneak in a parkrun somewhere in the Midlands on Boxing day or in London near Stoke Newington on 2nd Jan.

Merry Christmas to all on this thread and keep posting your runs over Christmas to keep the rest of us motivated

Remember lots of parkruns are doing Christmas Day and/or New Year's day events. There's a full list of which runs are doing what on the website.

I've just done my last Bath Skyline parkrun of the year - 16:53 or so on a muddy, windy course. A good way to blow away the cobwebs from last night's drinks!

Resting from running, I've been doing more strength and yoga ...I pulled a muscle in my lower back stretching forward after 30 minutes of a yoga session....

16:53 very impressive.

Local trail series 5k for me tomorrow, another course I don't know so we shall see how it works out. I'd be happy with something around 21 mins
